I closed my account years ago after having regularly been locked out of it for the flimsiest excuses. Making a purchase or withdrawal out of state without previously notifying them of my travel plans. Annual charitable contributions. Paying a friend's fines to get a bench warrant lifted off him. Once they locked my account at the beginning of a three-day weekend, with no customer service available, when I was planning to take a long trip but changed my mind at the last minute. Took them 18 hours to send an automated call to my landline, which gave me the only opportunity to unlock the account. If that had happened while I was on the road, I'd have had no money for gas, food, hotel, who knows what could have happened to me. Another time I was at O'Hare and my card stopped working. They called my home phone number instead of my cell! To see if I was in Chicago! I found out they used a third party service to monitor for potential fraud and do this sort of thing. I finally got sick of it and pulled my six figures out and put them in a bank that lets me resolve any situations like this instantly through their phone app rather than making me wait hours or days. A UVA Credit Union exec left a panicked message on my phone - finally got someone's attention! - and I left him one on his telling about all the different times this had happened, how often I was given promises and assurances that amounted to nothing, and ended by asking him: "How many second chances to you think you're entitled to?" Will never, ever go back to them. read more

I'm also disappointed I had UVA sunce 2000 and Im retired on disability and on oxygen I get another from heartford for sickness I developed while employed at uva . My beef with UVA is my checks get deposited on Fridays and it's showing in my account but they not going release my funds until following Monday. Why does chime and Dupont issue funds earlier and UVA holds on to this particular check. If it's true it was sent out on 16 then I have to wait until 20 then my funds need be available 12 midnight Sunday night. read more

The customer service experience has been extremely disappointing. The wait times are unacceptable and misleading. I am currently on hold at the 41-minute mark and repeatedly receive automated messages stating my wait time is "more than 3 minutes." At 44 minutes, that estimate suddenly changes to "more than 10 minutes." This kind of inaccurate and inconsistent messaging reflects a serious lack of respect for customers' time. If wait times are this excessive, transparency and accuracy should be the bare minimum. When someone does finally answer, after 53 minutes, I am told that the person I need to speak with left at 5pm and I would need to call back. This experience has been frustrating enough that I have decided it is time to look elsewhere for my banking needs. Reliable customer service is not optional in this industry, and this has fallen well below an acceptable standard. read more

If you like not having any call answered or just sit listening to whatever as you continue holding WELL past the anticipated 10 minute or more wait due "to heavy call volume," and then have to get in your car after no one picks up during 3 calls totaling OVER 55 minutes (still got the phone logs) to head to nearest branch on other side of Blue Ridge so someone could try and reach the loan department to get final closing details on APPROVED equity loan. TOLD by some the bank was severely "shanked," a term used by one of their staff. UNDERSTAFFED does NOT come close. New faces are clueless, smile, spew the untruths when asked what is going on because something seriously wrong is going on with the UVA Community Credit Union. Even sent secured message following loan demanding a call from a manager after an incident at loan closing with older white male officer who out of the clear, with no reason whatsoever, never had any loan officer to ever do what this one did probing into a small, less than $100 personal savings account in MY NAME ONLY FOR THE ENTIRE 43 YEARS I HAVE HAD IT BEFORE I WAS MARRIED AND WE ALREADY HAD A JOINT SAVINGS. Of all the weaponized incompetence in the service industry post COVID, the staff at the Jefferson St. location, take the cake. It takes them 1/3 of an hour to process a transaction when there's no one else in line but me and I'm just giving them money. They make me late for something every time I pull into their drive up window. When I tell them I'm about to be late, they take longer just to be passive aggressive and achieve their worthless goal. Took them a total of 7 minutes last time after they said just another 2 minutes to get me a receipt. And that was after the 13 minutes it took them JUST to take my money. Do not use the On line mobile deposit app. If you need the money deposited quickly as this is definitely NOT the way. It takes 2 days for the money to show up in your account and you're charged a fee for anything that happens to come in on that money you deposited. read more

If you're looking for a loan, UVA Community Credit Union is a great choice. They have great rates on automotive loans and their credit cards feature some of the lowest interest rates. For basic banking (checking and savings), however, I would choose another bank. UVA's online platform and apps are outdated compared to most others (i.e., Wells Fargo, Truist, Ally, etc.). I accidentally overdrew my account twice within a 24 hour period and was charged $32 per overdraw. I know this is standard, but what is not standard for today's times is not receiving an immediate alert or notification of the insufficient funds--that way I do not do it a second time. The way UVA sends an alert is to send you an email indicating that an "E-notice regarding your account is now available for viewing." Then you have to Log onto Online Banking, go to the "Services" tab, click on "Statements & Notices," and then download the notice--just to be alerted that you overdrew your account and are being charged for doing such. When traveling, checking email is not always convenient, but this was UVACCU's primary means of alerting me. When I asked to have at least one of the insufficient fund charges refunded, the supervisors declined my request. read more

I've been a member for over 8 years and am finally leaving after multiple experiences with terrible customer service and, at the end, a refusal to acknowledge a fraudulent charge after my info was stollen through a phishing scam. The charge was under $10, but it's astounding that they concluded there was "no error" in the charges. It's unfortunate. My ex-husband and I had a joint account with this bank when we lived in Virginia. When we divorced, we spent hours on the phone with various employees trying to close the account, and eventually sent a letter requesting closure per employees instructions. Switched to this bank recently and I've regretted it ever since. I'd highly recommend staying away from this bank. When I opened the account, I ordered a debit card. They told me it would take two weeks to come in. After waiting for three weeks, I followed up and they told me the card was never ordered but never notified me. I had to go into a branch to have another card rushed to me. I went into a branch and transferred a large amount of money from my previous credit union to UVA. When I closed my previous credit union account, I tried to transfer the remainder of my money to my new account. They told me this would be no problem and initiated the transfer. I discovered shortly after that the transfer takes 3-5 business days, which they didn't tell me. So my money was in limbo and unable to be used. I canceled the transfers and contacted customer service. Customer service told me to go to an ATM and withdraw the money then deposit it into my new account. I tried to do this, but i could only withdraw $1k at a time (again they failed to tell me this). So I went to a branch and tried to do the same transfer I did before (this time for less money than the first transfer) but they told me I had a $1000 limit, and suggested I drive to the branch every day and make transfers $1000 at a time until all the money was transferred. After explaining to a manager that I had already made a transfer for more money, they were able to make the transfer. They do not accept Venmo instant transfers or Google wallet Tap to pay. Very archaic considering most banks support these options. Overall really regretting switching to UVA credit union and I'm sure I'll end up switching to a better option. read more

So. After 28 years. This is it. They would not cash my paycheck today because it was made out to my short name instead of my full name. It had my last name. I had my ID on me. I've cashed checks from this place of work for 8 months. They've never had an issue. They take forever to deposit checks I submit online, so I went to the closest branch where they know me by name. They were rude and treated me with such disrespect. I went to another branch, closed my accounts and will never go back. Please do yourself a favor. Find another bank!! read more

If I could give no stars I would. I have been a customer of this bank for 25 years. In the past two years, things have really gone downhill. They hold every check you deposit for 10-14 days. They spend more time socializing than actually working. At the Louisa branch, I watched two associates talk for 25 minutes while three people waited in line. I didn't need to know about their weekend activities, but apparently they thought we did. When you can only have 3 people in the lobby because of COVID, and they are wasting time, it tends to upset people. I also watched a women use hand sanitizer on her gloves. At the Zion Crossroad branch, the sign with posted hours is wrong up front. They changed the ones for the drive through but not the ones up front. They stated that they decreased the hours due to a "limited" staff, but with every teller booth full and three desk full, it doesn't look very "decreased" to me. An employee came in at 7:45 followed by another employee and yet they still couldn't open the drive through on time. All the employees take up the good parking spots leaving their customers with the ones further away. They never make banking errors and all fees are your fault because you didn't adhere to one of their 9 million made up rules. Other banks don't work like this. They never admit their wrong and they often act like petulant children when you prove to them that you were in fact right. Their mobile check deposit feature is a joke and so antiquated it can't read what's written on the back. If you forget to write "mobile" on the check they don't bother to tell you. They overdraft your account and let you figure it out. When you contact them via the messaging app it takes more than the stated 2 days to respond and when they do, it's a long winded response full of banking jargon and they don't bother to answer the question you originally asked. Communication is the key to a successful business and they are horrible at it. The customer is NEVER right. I will be changing banks. If you VALUE your money, FIND A DIFFERENT BANK!!! The customer service hotline is the best part of the bank. They seem like they actually want jobs. The others seem like they are here just for the paycheck. read more

Their policy is set up to allow them to steal from poor people. Don't allow instant transfers from venmo. Charges a few fo overdraft even if you put funds in the same day. Not in any way a "community" bank. Stole $42 from me last week when my account should've been in the good...but they don't allow instant venmo transfers. Venmo transfer got rejected. I did realize until I overdraft we by about $17 (my acct should've been good by $200). So they stole $42 in "fees" (overdraft fees account for more financial loss than all street crime). Customer service was zero help. They really needed that last $42 of mine I guess, the ghouls. read more

UVA CC has made it part of their business strategy to charge customers at every opportunity and to make it harder to complete a payment. Every month I find myself resetting a password that is even saved in a password vault!! once I finally get logged in, almost every month, without fail I get an error message saying the server cannot complete the transaction "please try again later". It costs $5b for any online payment and $10 if you have to do it over the phone. Reading through all the reviews makes it clear UVA CC is aware of their system issues, because they reply and say they "hear us"; however, nothing has changed and it is harder than ever to make a payment. most businesses try to make it easy to give them money, this credit union is benefiting financially from making it as hard as possible. read more

I'm now three years down the road with UVACC and this is still such a painful bank to use. Making payments is like pulling teeth - you have to log in twice to make a payment on a loan (once into your account and then once into the online payment center) and the password resets, etc are not connected. There is no way to set up auto pay with my regular bank as you can't mail a payment in for a loan. On top of all that, they continue to charge $5 a month for the privilege of paying on my car loan. I can't express how frustrating this institution is. I strongly recommend any other option to finance a vehicle. At this point I've tried repeatedly to get my car refinanced elsewhere but the rates can't compete - so I guess that's one thing they have going for them. Personally, if I could do it over again, I'd rather pay a bit more and work with a reasonable bank with functional online banking. read more

There are several times when I thought of switching; like when I sat in the lobby of their Pantops branch for about 35 minutes, watching bankers in their offices leisurely phoning, and noone asking what I need. What got me lately was asking to use the restroom in my local branch; I was told I could not, for safety reasons. I asked what that meant, and was told that it was to ensure that I wouldn't go to their restroom and pull a gun out. What's the lesson here? Late payments will result in phone calls, and letters, even if it's 75 cents overdue. True. Accounting system always pays for the current month, and leaves the past due amount late, so on paper it looks as you never caught up on your payments. Very True! They cancelled my credit card account and did not tell me about it, found out card was declined when trying to pay for a 30 dollar item and it was not over the limit, just 45 days late. They will do just about anything to loan you money for something, but will bug the hell out of you if you're late, or behind and will deduct it from your account without permission. read more

I have been very disappointed with this company service. Their systems are outdated, they literally handed me a coupon book for my car payment. Thus far, everything has been very complicated resulting in their lack of communication of my first payment being due at a certain point in time. This resulted in multiple phone calls and emails, I have exceptional credit and I will attribute this to their error import communication. I was able to get things taken care of but had to physically go to the building twice to do so. I will never take another loan out with them again no matter how low interest rate is. read more

When we moved to Charlottesville 4 months ago, we left our respective large corporate banks (Citi and Chase) and opened a joint account with University of Virginia Community Credit Union. Big mistake. They are bizarrely unprepared to correctly deal with your money. My complaints: 1. They got my name wrong on the checks. 2. They somehow (even after printing the checks) claimed that I was not an owner of the account. My husband had to accompany me twice to the branch to fix this. I couldn't access my own money that was being direct-deposited into the account. 3. In fact, they do not actually offer joint checking accounts!! They claim that is what we have, but their "system" is "not able" to put more than one owner on the account. I didn't realize this (because they lied that it was fixed, see #2) and when I went to print out statements for work reimbursements, only my husband's name is listed on the statement. Apparently, he is the "primary owner," and I am the "secondary owner" and not listed anywhere. They are NOT ABLE to put my name on the statements. According to their rules, two people cannot be equal co-owners of an account!! I am boggled that a bank operating in this century cannot accommodate a joint account (by which I mean a truly joint account, like, you know, with my name attached to it). They are also rude, but I can handle rudeness from people I suspect are actually competent at their jobs. In this case, it just reinforces my decision to write this review and go change banks. Of course, I have to take my husband with me to close the account. So, if you loved the 1950's and have a hankering to control your lady's finances, you'll love this bank. Jesus. read more

The UVA CCU is an okay local bank. Few branches, limited hours and ATMs, reasonable fees. My review today however is mostly in regard to a car loan that my wife and I recently got through them. Their car loan policy is exceptionally flawed, and I would not recommend getting a car loan through them, and thus would not recommend bothering to open a bank account with them, until they fix this problem. We were pre-approved for a loan, but the person who called us didn't tell us what to do next. I called back over the next week to ask, but it took about five tries to get a person on the phone. The multiple messages I left with them went unanswered. When I finally did talk to someone over a week later she told me it was simple: just go to a dealer, pick out your car, get the Bill of Sale from them, and give us a call, we'll take care of the rest. Easy enough right? What we eventually realized is that the UVA CCU has no idea how used car purchases actually work. We drove 75 miles from Charlottesville to get the car we wanted (there are very few used cars closer by). After spending hours going through the dealer's whole system and repeatedly refusing their offers of financing, we finally got everything signed for our car. So I called the UVA CCU, and of course it took a few tries to get anything more than an answering machine. They told me: okay, now you just have to drive back to Charlottesville and sign all the paperwork for the loan, and we'll get you your check tomorrow. TOMORROW?! This is not how buying a used car works. When you get this far while turning down the dealer's financing the whole time, they expect that you will be ready to hand them a check in exchange for the keys. But no, UVA CCU wanted us to tell them, "the check's in the mail, but can we have the car?" This whole situation of course made our dealer quite angry, and gave them yet another opportunity to push their rip-off financing on us. Luckily, it was the last day of the month, and they really wanted the sale, so they agreed to give us the car in exchange for a personal check for the entire amount to be cashed in two days. Why even bother getting the loan right? We were then left to race back to Charlottesville so that we could fill out the paperwork before 5pm so that they could overnight the check. The finance person at the dealership told us that, "in all her years she had never seen something like this." Suffice it to say, if you are looking for a used car or even a new one outside of Charlottesville, AVOID the UVA CCU. They are not currently equipped to do business in car loans. read more

Have been trying for a month just to close my account, but unclear language, disgruntled employees who are just itching to pass the buck, and a system as old as dirt (or at least one so unreliable it seems outdated) have kept me in a vortex of frustration, trapped as a member. I've been with UVA Community Credit Union for 20+ years, I've had my account hacked 3 times, yesterday I found out it was hacked yet again. In the past UVA Credit Union has reversed all of the fraudulent charges but this time was different, there was a Facebook charge and the gentlemen name was attached to the fraudulent charge and they are refusing to reverse that charge stating I have to get my money back from Facebook. They clearly saw that the account was hacked since they texted me about the suspicious activity, now they want to pick and choose what they will reverse so now I'm out of $100. Never had anything like this happened with Virginia Credit Union as far as the account getting hacked. read more

Awful!! If I could give zero stars I would. I used UVA CCU on a car loan, that was processed through the dealership. It was the best rate available. Since that day I have had nothing but issues with transactions and antiquated processing between my main bank and this bank. There are an unbelieveable amount of steps to do anything and when I try and call to talk to someone, it can take up to 10 minutes. The hoops I have had to jump though to figure out why my payments are taking 8-10 days to get from one bank to another and set up an online account has been RIDICULOUS!!! read more

You can make your payment at a decent time, they take the money AS SOON as you press submit payment but won't process/post it to your account for DAYS making you late on your loan payment and then charging you for it! Next, they NEED a ssn card - they cant use an ID, passport, or any other form of ID. If I felt like going to the SSA building (yay, lets go stand in line for 2 hours), even THEY accept passport and ID! How archaic. Applied for a HELOC loan in August 2017. Assigned to Roger T., sent all the docs within a few weeks and waited. No communication at all. Then they state that my spouse, who is not on the loan paperwork nor listed on the primary loan, has bad credit. My income is over 100k, DTI: less than 5%, Credit Score : Over 800, and LTV is less than 70. After sending ultimatum, just a curt we will not provide loan from Roger. No further explanation. It is a good thing we did not need the HELOC. But the customer service provided left a lot to be desired. Christine. read more

Warning!!! Unsecured banking practices. First experience went to deposit money at drive in and when I received the receipt for the deposit there was no total balance indicated. I asked the teller why no balance and I was told I needed to give her my ID card. I mentioned that never happened to me and she basically said "tuff" t was her prerogative. Went in to talk to manager and the manager said its a new security policy for all tellers and the reason for not putting a balance on a receipt is because people have been known to make a very small deposit on someone else's account and know what the remaining balance is in that persons account. OK I said I can accept that reasoning. Problem is that many times since then some tellers are still printing the balance on the deposit receipts. Second experience with account security problem. When you clear your history on your computer or you need to register a new computer to do your online banking with UVA Community Credit Union after you enter your password the web site ask's where to send a security number to continue with you online banking. You can either have the security number emailed to your email address or sent to your phone number on file in your profile. To my surprise I found a phone number listed in my profile belonging to another person. How in the world did this unknown phone number which I traced to a person living in Albemarle County, VA get into my profile? Awaiting answer to this from UVACCU. read more
