Brad "The Owner" is an Expert Automotive Engineer. He can build cars from the ground up and knows cars (especially vintage vehicles) like the back of his hands. He does things as simple as oil changes up to rebuilding motors and full drive train restoration. His prices are very reasonable but the most important part, you can trust him, he will not do work any work that is not required, he is honest and reputable. Ignore those other reviews.... they are usually people that want "FREE" work and will complain about anything! He can fine tune a 2018 SS Camaro......or re-build the top of an old 90 Dodge Ram D-150 and change out a bad clutch. Come here, you won't be sorry! I needed to get some fluids changed and have my truck checked out before a 2000 mile road trip. I check the reviews on Yelp and Val Halla came out on top. I called them up and they got me in the day before I was to leave - perfect! Now - understand that while I'm no mechanic I do know my way around engines, drivetrains, etc - especially on my own vehicles. One of the worst to things you'll find with many mechanics is: 1) They BS you about what is wrong with the vehicle 2) They upsell you on work that needs to be done. I brought my Excursion in and neither of these two things happened. Heck, I thought some other things needed to be changed before I brought it in and they told me 'nope' - I had plenty of time. I appreciate that in a major way. Honestly is not the norm in this business and this is probably why Val Halla has such high reviews. Pricing was EXTREMELY fair. I was very happy with the work done. This is one of the only places I'll take my vehicles in for work now. There is pride in the work being done and it shows. The search for an honest mechanic is over. Finally I have found an auto repair place with honest automotive technicians. As a woman and a car owner for over 45 years, I have been ripped off by numerous mechanics all over America. At Val Halla Automotive Service, I receive quality service at a reasonable price. They have never tacked on additional costs and, rather than suggesting repairs, Dan Olsen just tells me what he can do and lets me decide. They do a great job, right the first time, and usually it was done expeditiously. Dan runs a honest business (his dad was an honest logger) and he is always concerned about his customers needs. I simply would not go anywhere else to have my PT Cruiser serviced. Val Halla's not much to look at - a one chair waiting room and a framed photo of Clark Gable, circa 1940 on the wall - because Dan and his crew care more about cars than decor. Dan has always been honest about what needs to be done, what could wait until later, and he has given me a fair price. After stopping in just once looking for a place that would service my 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser, I left feeling that my car was in great hands, and I wasn't disappointed. Overall, Val Halla provides high quality service for a reasonable price. And they're really nice too. For those reasons, I will continue to bring all of my car repair business to them. "An auto repair facility you can trust." I never thought I would utter that phrase. What I love most about Val Halla is that I can trust them. They don't "sell" parts, in fact, with my older vehicle, there are times when Dan has advised me to skip a repair because it's too expensive. It's nice to know that there is an auto repair business on Gentry Way in Reno that provides honest service. His technicians are all highly qualified; they know what they are doing. If you love your car, it's in good hands here! If you want it done right the first time, Val Halla is your place. I had an air conditioning problem with my car and spoke to three local repair shops. I said I wanted a Freon recharge but wanted NO air conditioning check. (That's because I have a failed $500 fan and I can't afford the repair.) One place quoted me $125, the other quote was $135, and Val Hall quoted me $40. (It ended up costing $40.15 but Dan blew off the 15-cents.) Val Halla diagnosed the problem quickly, did the repairs for exactly what I was quoted (pus 15 cents) and I am now able to drive around Reno with blessed air! Great Service. When the Chrysler dealership closed its doors, I was very pleased to learn that Val Halla had a mechanic whose family owns three PT Cruisers. I am a female who drives a lot. Long review, but worth reading if you are serious about your car! Very happy with choosing Dan at Val Halla. My 2001 Honda Accord needed a new timing belt & water pump. I took it to a recommended mechanic (Independent Honda), who quoted me $875 for the belts and another $75 for new spark plugs, a total of $950 before taxes. I didn't have the money and my vehicle sat on the curb for the last 3.5 months (it was winter anyway so i drove my dad's truck around). Well it was time to have the work done, but I still couldn't swallow that much money, so we started calling around. I called 4 places... each had quoted less than the original, about $500-$600, (Dan quoted $579.00) with one quoting $775. I also called the dealer, just for sh*ts and giggles, who said it would be $1300. So I took it to A Master Mechanic, who had done work on my sister's car and my dad's truck. They had quoted us $450-$550. However, they called me back and said after looking at the vehicle, it would be more around $775.00. Well, I wasn't happy about that, and took it to the two other cheaper ones... Vinny's first, who said he'd do it for $520.00, but didn't bother looking at the vehicle and seemed a little miffed that we had come in on a Friday afternoon... (not expecting to leave my vehicle, but just wanting to talk to someone!). So then we drove to Val Halla and I'm soooo happy! We told him the story of A master mechanic changing the price and wondering if there was some reason for that... he asked if it was a regular Vtec engine, and we said yes, and then he said he would come and look at the vehicle. He did, and he still quoted us $579.00. He was extremely straightforward, polite, and professional. He gave us the quote in writing and we would bring the vehicle in that next Monday. When we talked to Dan the next day, he said that it was less than what he quoted and was going to put premium spark plugs in, which I was happy simply because Independent Honda made me believe that was another $75.00. When we came to pick up the vehicle, the total ended up being just under $550.00. I was completely ecstatic, considering I felt I had saved myself several hundreds of dollars by calling around. My daughter and I were visiting Reno, to visit the University of Nevada, Reno, from the Bay Area. Our Volvo XC90 started making a horrendous noise on the way up there, and thankfully we nursed the car into Reno. A stressful situation to say the least! Having never been in Reno, I had NO idea what I was going to do. I awoke at 5am, and the first thought that popped in my head was "check YELP". Val Halla was the repair shop that jumped out at me. I mean, an auto mechanic with 5 stars and not one bad review? Is this even possible? I called at 7am, and spoke with Dan. Thanks goodness he had time to check my car! I explained that I had to be at UNR for a tour, and asked we could walk there...."No way, I'll give you a ride". Took car to Val Halla, got a ride from Dan, had car repaired at reasonable price and made it home to the Bay Area safe and sound! Thanks to Dan and the ValHalla mechanics. You usually don't see a lot of 5 star places with 100% 5 stars.... it usually makes a person a little skeptical but you just have to try them to believe it. Honesty is the best policy, but usually not one that mechanics hold to. However, these guys break the mold. My husband and I went here and basically gave them the go ahead that leaves mechanics seeing $$$ : We asked them to take a look at the car and tell us if anything was wrong before our big road trip. When they performed the basic oil change and break checkup we asked for, they called my husband to let them know they hadn't found anything wrong yet but they were inspecting further. Amazing: They checked in with us! Couldn't believe it... Once they were completely done they called my husband to let him know they didn't find anything unusual and didn't come back with a big list of things they thought we needed to fix. I was amazed... As a person who knows nothing about cars (not a ditzy woman, but this is my husband's area) I would feel safe coming here without risk of being ripped off, misled, or pushed into things I don't really need. I had to repair my engine after having it seize up on me. I called around, and Dan at Val Halla was the ONLY shop in town to take the time put together a formal quote for me. The pricing was cheaper than the ball park pricing all of the competitors gave me, and the company he works with to get remanufactured engines offers a great warranty on their parts, far better than anything I was able to find on my own, or the shops who gave me ball park estimates and ball park information on the repair. When I first met Dan, the day I brought my vehicle in, he was very kind and professional, and gave off the vibe that he was honest and trustworthy. He outlined all of the repairs he expected to have to do, listed some possible repairs he may have to do if the engine was too far gone, and even kept all of the parts for me to inspect (I know this is the law, but I have not had a mechanic ask if I wanted to inspect them before). When I said that it was fine, I believed him when he said how bad it was, he got a big grin on his face and insisted because I had to at least be curious. When he showed me, it was evident that this is Dan's passion. He lit up while showing me the problems in the old engine, and when showing me the new stuff he put in. It was obvious to me that he is one of the rare people who have managed to find themselves doing exactly what they love. I would highly recommend this mechanic to anyone who wants or needs one that they can trust. My vehicle needed 100k preventative maintenance. Dealership wanted $1400. I called 9 shops with estimates from $780 to $1400 with most over $1100. When Val Halla gave the lowest estimate I was skeptical. I read the five star yelp reviews and positive feedback from previous customers. I was sold. Made my appointment and got me in within a day. It was positive reassurance when a local auto supply chain store employee assured me Dan does wonderful work. Dan was a pleasure to work with over the phone and in person. Shop is no thrills and located by the Atlantis Casino. This means low over head and cheaper prices. There were no surprises, no hidden costs and no pressure. He called mid day to give an update and had the car back when promised. I was thrilled to get a written warranty with a 12k 12 month coverage at ANY ASE shop. I also checked the DMV website and he's a licensed shop and a clean better business bureau record. All the licenses are in the shop. He's too good to be true. I'm simply amazed I found Dan. I took my car in because I was having a series of odd issues with it. They kept it for a few days, and then finally got back to me saying there was absolutely nothing wrong, reassured me and basically brushed me off when I voiced further concerns. The issues continued, so I finally took it into another shop, only to find that they had somehow missed a massive internal leak in my engine. In this great country of ours, we have three types of mechanics: the great mechanics, the OK mechanics, and the douche bag mechanics. I can now say I have dealt with all three types, Val Halla being one of the few great mechanics that exist. If you were to take a gander at my previous review of a mechanic I dealt with in Southern California, you might understand my contempt for mechanics in general - especially one that has such good ratings. So, one might find it reasonable when I say that I'm hesitant about believing the reviews of 11 random people I don't even know. However, rest assured that this shop is GREAT. I think everything that everyone else has said has been accurate to the thousands degree. In the last week or so, I've taken two cars there for two different issues, and I've been satisfied with the results each time. I took my 2003 Passat in because I had 8 inches (8 inches too many) of play in my steering wheel. I've been putting this off for quite some time as I feared the worse - a $2,000 dollar repair bill replacing every component in my front end. But, a few hours after I dropped it off, they called me and said that the outer tie rods were worn so badly they couldn't tell what other components in my front end would be bad - so with a quote of around 390 dollars, I told them to go ahead. They told me that they would get the tie rods replaced the next morning, and if that fixed the problem, get it aligned (if time permitted) and I'd be set. I didn't hear back until Monday, so naturally I was a bit apprehensive about what the results were of installing the outer tie rods. But, when I got the call Monday morning, I was relieved - nothing else was bad and I could come get the car. They asked if I wanted them to look at the check engine light (which goes back to the previous mechanic), and I told them an abbreviated (well, I thought it was abbreviated at least) story. However, I wanted them to look at my AC and figure out what was wrong with that. Dan really didn't want to venture too far into the AC system - my guess is that a car with the electronic climate control, and the problem I gave him, made him use his better judgement and decline to look at the problem. I was a bit disappointed at that, but he recommended another facility that specializes in Air Conditioners. So, Monday morning I dropped off my boses Honda. He left it up here after a family emergency and hasn't had time to drive it back to Socal, so we use it as the "out of towner" loaner car. Needless to say, its a dust collector. However, a few weeks ago an out of towner was driving the car and mentioned it overheating, and I drove it out to the SF over the weekend and it overheated as well, so I decided it would be a good idea to take it in when I picked my car up and have them check it out. As another reviewer stated, they were extremely informative, and showed me one of the tie rods they removed from my Passat, which had a 1/4" of play in it. He said both of them were like that. Everyone I spoke with has been extremely friendly, although I think I've spoken to Brad the most - but either way, everyone is very friendly. They aren't pushy, they don't try to up sell, and they do exactly what you want. As far as the Honda was concerned, they called yesterday and informed me that they did a pressure check, but that it didn't reveal any leaks or bad seals, and suggested that the thermostat be replaced. They finished it today, and I'm going to be going tomorrow morning to pick it up. But again, they didn't try to give me a bunch of crap about what was really wrong. They didn't tell me the water pump was bad, and that I should replace it along with the timing belt. So, the bottom line: Everything that everyone else has said in the other reviews I think is true. I won't hesitate taking my car to Val Halla for any mechanical stuff. I'll try to stay away from the electronic stuff, because they seem to like the mechanical stuff a lot better. I'm working on a punch list of things I want done to my car, and I'll probably be taking my car back once a month, or every other month to get this punch list taken care of. I'm not going to bother with any other place in the Reno/Sparks area for brakes, suspension, belts, etc. You aren't going to find a spacious dealership service department here. These are people who live and breath cars. But, I'd rather take Val Halla over the dealership any day - and I'm sure the other reviewers would agree. I was satisfied with this place enough to recommend it to a co-worker who was having problems with his car - but it turned out he needed a new battery. I was also satisfied enough to give them 5 stars ... which doesn't hold true for a lot of places I go to. So, the real bottom line wrapped up in one sentence: If you have car problems, you shouldn't considering bring your car here ... you should just DO IT. read more

Of the 3 mechanics that we took our van too, this guy really knew his stuff. We took our van in for a pre burning man tune up and the previous mechanic assured us that we were good to go. We got there and it broke down so we had to be towed out of black rock city all the way to Reno. Of the list of auto shops burning man reps gave, we decided to outside of that list and chose Val Halla. What a great find! They were quick and they actually fixed the real problem. The guys are back again for another spot on performance. My old Mustang has 188K on it and started driving like sh*t Would barley start, wanted to stall, bad idling. You don't take a 16 year old car to the dealership so I yelped on Thursday and found these guys and made an appointment for Monday. Dropped car off 8:30am Monday morning. Dan called me 12:45 pm I expected to need to rebuild the engine. Nooooooooooope. After some tests - I was essentially running an 8 cylinder mustang on 6 cylinders says Dan. All that was needed was to reattach a vacuum hose which had shaken off its mount. He put in a new screw with some locktite tested again and seemed good to go. Cost was $131 - I can afford that. Right he was. I picked up the car and sped off - just like it always does! Oh, and don't expect to SEE a dealership when you pull in - this is an auto repair shop that does great work for a great price - not a showroom! read more

We took our 10 year old car into Val Halla with a variety of minor complaints. He sorted through what was important, what wasn't important and fixed it for about a 1/3 of what I expected to pay. It's our off road car so it needs to be functional and reliable, but not necessarily luxurious. He got that immediately and did a perfect job of triage. These guys are great. As someone said, these guys are some of the nicest, upfront, incredibly informative mechanics you'll ever meet. I simply needed a top-up of the ATF for my civic hybrid. I talked to a very friendly & helpful rangy guy in his 40s (possibly Dan?) who did exactly what I asked for w/out trying to sell me on other services (while noting that I should take the car in soon for oil/ATF flushes - in other words, he would have had pretty legit reasons to try to get me to do more there, but I'd been clear I needed to get a move on). He made a point of showing me how to do it myself - before i could even ask him to - which was really great. As a woman I often have to deal with mechanics who assume I know nothing & have no interest in learning (and the odd guy who won't even look me in the eye), and I love how much this experience was the complete opposite. Then there was the price - he suggested just "a couple bucks" b/c it was just a little fluid & cheerfully said it'd been a nice break. I gave him $4 (would've been more if I'd had more bills in my wallet b/c I was so pleased) and he seemed happy with that. $4! Can you imagine what jiffy lube would have charged? Dan and his team were amazing. My radiator gave out on me the day before I needed to head to California. I phoned Dan in the AM and let him know my situation. He said the schedule was full, but to bring the car over to see what it needed. His team diagnosed the issue, Dan ordered the part and said it would be done by the end of the day. It was and the car works great! This even occurred on a holiday. I left very satisfied and I know where I'll be taking my car in the future. For what it's worth, this is also not the type of place that will "talk down to you" or make you feel like a complete fool. They are kind, hard working, fair and fast. Excellent service. I had just moved to the area and needed my car repaired to pass smog. They diagnosed the problem and had me back on the road with a passing smog test in less than 48 hours AND for $40 less than they had originally quoted. The only reason it took as long as it did was because they needed to borrow a special diagnostic machine from someone else. The only downside is that they are very busy. They will definitely try to work within a time frame if you ask for one, but it is just two guys who get a lot of business. If you are able to wait to get in to see them, however, the wait will be worth it. I will be taking my car here for maintenance whenever possible. read more

Very honest, affordable shop! Stopped by during a road trip to have our 2003 Astro assessed due to check engine light coming on and O'Reillys code meter saying cylinder 1 misfire. Mechanic was quick to assess the problem with another shop doing a botch job on a spark plug wire install. Took about an hour for new wires to be delivered and put on correctly. Last month we towed our car here due to an engine issue. We were greeted by Dan who was very helpful. We didn't have an appointment, and he was honest that they wouldn't be able to fix it that day - which I was fine with seeing as it was a Friday and the start of a long weekend. The following week they figured out what was wrong with the car and fixed it. I was so scared of the cost, but it wasn't too bad (could have been way worse). I read many of the reviews on various auto places in Reno. I have never been more disappointed by a Yelp recommendation. It is almost as if all the reviewers have been paid. I actually asked my second tow operator about Valhalla because I was confused how it could have such good ratings and be SO bad. He confirmed that he had heard many bad stories about the service. Lets start from the beginning: Wow my car hit 100k... time for a service in a new town, what to do? Research leads me here. I take my car in for an appointment. "Same day" they say. I call back at 4:45... response is "oh it's that late already? by the way we broke something while we were replacing your belts. It's going to cost an extra $70 to fix and you can't drive with it broken." Ok... I give them the benefit of the doubt. Maybe it was going to break eventually? A week goes by and my car is just gushing oil... like scads of oil. I check my oil levels and they are low. Add more oil, go see my mother who tightens the oil cap under the car (yes my mom is the best thanks). Driving back from my mom's house the car overheats. I have it towed back to Valhalla again. They take a week to even call me about it. I keep calling and no one has any info on what's wrong. As a side note... the mechanic is attempting to use the key on my ring that doesn't have a chip in it to start the car. "Sometimes it just doesn't start" he says. Another week goes by and my car has miraculously been fitted with a new radiator and temp gauge. All is well? I look under the hood and the overflow tank is still missing a cap. "Can I get a cap for this?" I say after driving back. The owner was nice and gave me a cap free of charge. Ok, maybe I won't write a scathing review. Wrong. Two weeks or so later (a.k.a. tonight) my car overheats again on the same road. I get towed back again, this time to my house because there is no way I can wait two weeks to hear back about what is wrong or be charged too much for work that didn't fix the issue. My car worked great before I took it into this place. If I could give it one star I would. Probably have to sell my car for scraps? /cry read more

I have been very disappointed in the service from this place. Dan promised to diagnose my startup/running problems on my '68 Ford Galaxie, but when the car would not start up a few weeks later after having the tires changed (and not having been driven), he said I would have to have it towed back to his shop for him to help me. I asked if he would help finance the tow, since the problem pretty obviously had something to do with his work, but he refused. He insisted that none of what had happened was his fault, even though I found the battery poorly connected as well as the carburetor, which I had explicitly asked him to check the connections on. Would not go back to this shop unless I were offered a refund or at least a free tow. read more

Came here because of good reviews. Spent over $800.00 for oil leak repair and new battery and alternator. Got truck back and passenger side airbag on dashboard looked like it had deployed and they tried a fucked up hide a job. Of course they denied anything happened even though it's quite obvious the dashboard being raised on that side~ they claimed maybe the "sun" did it (this was in the winter days), now today I'm getting the oil changed on the truck and tech shows me that they didn't use the right oil plug! I needed work on my car, read the reviews on 'yelp' and was impressed by their 5***** ratings all across & thought I finally found a shop that I can trust! As a woman I've been taken to the Automotive Hall Of Shame quite a number of times and was so happy. As it turned out, I was charged $51.- to clamp a hose and was pleased to get off so easy. Later that day I noticed lots of leak spots on the carport cement & I took it back. Now I was told it's the Turbo and since it was a Thursday, they would call me as soon as they had some pricing ideas, of course it would be thousands and I didn't want to wait a whole weekend, so, I would get a call next day, Friday. Well, THEY NEVER CALLED!!! But, as it turned out, my car nearly died the very same day ((-; Next day I called the shop down the street from me, they asked me some questions over the phone, it was determined the car could be driven the short distance to the shop, and $300.- later (not THOUSANDS) my car was fixed!! I tried Valhalla because of the excellent reviews I read on Yelp. I am always leary to take my car to a dealership because I think repairs are often done unnecessary making me pay more than I should. I had a mechanic at my work that took care of my car - when he left I really needed to find someone. I will look no further. Dan at Val Halla is a pleasure to work with. I scheduled an appointment a week out thinking my Chevy Tahoe could withstand a few more days. I had been negligent aside from regular oil and filter changes for a couple of years. My vehicle was overheating and needed a few checks as well as an irritating whine on acceleration and deceleration. I called Dan prior to my scheduled appointment and he happily made time for me that day. He called within a few hours after I dropped the car off with the diagnosis, cost and time frame. Everything was done as promised and he even went so far as to discourage me from a repair that might not be needed and that we should just "watch it". The price was fair as I am always happy to support private business and I will always happily pay for a honest job well done. When picking up vehicle all of my old parts were available for me to inspect however I didn't feel the need but very much appreciated the option. The invoice was all hand written which I also appreciated. My Tahoe is running great. A new water pump, hoses, coolant, temp housing, tensioner pulley etc. Will watch the power steering. Val Halla is a one person business, who came highly recommended to me by my manager after Auto Motion tried to pull a fast one. Haven't had him do any major repair work (toca madera) yet, but did a comprehensive check of my car at 99,000 for a fair price and with honest advice about needed repairs. read more
