We rode a bus in so parking was never an issue. Friendly staff that came on our bus and greeted us and had our room key card ready waiting on us. Clean and very well maintained. Only 2 lifts at the hotel so a line was formed due to 23 of us trying to go up at once. The breakfast had a lot to offer from a variety of juices, cereals, and pastries. Two coffee machines which I wish some hotels served just plain coffee without all the added stuff in it. The usual selection of hot breakfast foods. Scrambled eggs, bacon, sausages, beans, and mushrooms. Not a fan of any hotel that doesn't offer air conditioning. Only a heater inside. If we lived in Iceland that would be a different story. I had to open the balcony door to get cool air into the room and the covers made me hot so I didn't sleep well for 2 nights even though the bed and pillows were comfortable. Definitely a European thing. Thankfully they had an oscillating fan in the room. All the staff we met were very polite and thoughtful. If I slept well I would have rated it higher, but I got very little sleep due to being hot.

There is a gym which I checked but did not use. The staff was helpful, attentive and efficient. The restaurant was very good. Dinner of a rump steak and fries was tasty and well plated. Price was reasonable. The breakfast buffet was pretty much standard UK fare and the fruit selection was good. There was no grill station so you had to ask for anything but scrambled eggs. The room rates are high for a tourist but are comparable to other similarly located business hotels.

We didn't even stay with the in-laws but they were happy for us to come and join them for breakfast (we did have to pay, but it was worth it). The hotel has a very Victorian feel and all the rooms are tastefully decorated to fit with period. They even opted for extra luxury last time and had a four poster bed! The Penthouse suite is the only exception. Its very modern. Its only a short walk through the park to get into the city centre and it benefits from free parking too. Its not like all the other chain hotels, every room is unique and your made to feel special.

The room was spacious and comfortable, we had a decent view of the city, it was not perhaps as quiet as it could have been - we may have been above the bar area because we could here the bass going and music playing, although it stopped before midnight. We urgently needed to check our email that night and there was no internet access on the premises, surprisingly - their one internet terminal was out of service. However, the front desk staff called us a cab to take us to the closest internet cafe, which turned out to be quite dodgy but that is another story. The staff are what makes this hotel stand out from the many others we stayed at during our two week trip in the UK - they were all unfailingly friendly, courteous, helpful.

At approximately $368 per night, the hotel was neither the most expensive nor the least expensive option available. One of the reasons we selected it was because a complimentary breakfast was included. Upon arrival, we were surprised to discover that our room had two single beds rather than one larger bed. I immediately contacted the front desk to request a room change but was informed that the hotel was fully booked and no alternative rooms were available. A larger bed would have been preferrable but it wasn't a big deal. The room itself was uncomfortably warm and stuffy the whole time. Although the window could be opened slightly, it provided very little ventilation. There appeared to be an air conditioning unit in the room and an air exchanger above the door so I contacted Reception for instructions on how to operate them. I was surprised to learn that neither unit was functional. I again requested a room change but was told this was not possible. The hotel did offer a fan, which we accepted the next day. Unfortunately, the room never cooled down, even during the night. Both of us experienced restless, uncomfortable sleeps due to the heat. The bedding consisted of duvets in covers, with no separate sheets provided. We eventually removed the duvets and used only the covers but the room remained excessively warm. A few days later, we borrowed a second fan. While the fans helped cool us when we had them pointing as us, they did not lower the room temperature. Adding to the frustration, each fan had a timer that automatically shut it off after a maximum of two hours, requiring us to wake up repeatedly throughout the night to restart them. Between the heat and the fan timers, neither of us slept well during our entire stay. Another issue was the shower. Regardless of the time of day, the water pressure was extremely poor. The staff were friendly. The hotel is in a good spot as it's between the city centre and the Bay (about a 15 minute walk either way). It's in a residential area so there's nothing but housing around.
