We attended ALC for 3 years. Up until May of this year, I would have told you that it's a wonderful…read morechurch with caring leadership. Our entire family was volunteering weekly, I was doing the lesson planning for a class in kid's church, volunteered at church events, etc. Unfortunately, I quickly found out what type of people are actually running ALC. The pastor's wife stalked my Facebook page and didn't care for a church politics post and immediately started stirring up trouble. I got an email stating 'effective immediately' I was no longer allowed to volunteer until I had a meeting with the pastor. She also thought it was a grand idea for her and her sidekick to block me on Facebook and then she approached my daughter at youth group. What kind of pastor's wife blocks people on Facebook and then approaches their kid at a church function? Not only that, but they went as far as to tell our life group leaders not to allow us back in life group because we're negative and they don't need negative in their group. What was the church politics post about that stirred up so much trouble? It was about how volunteers pour their heart and souls into ministry, only to be tossed aside when yet another pastor's wife is hired to replace a volunteer. I read an article that was talking about building a family kingdom or a kingdom for God, and unfortunately this church is building a kingdom for their family. And when the pastor's wife feels threatened in the slightest, they will block you and shun you from the church. Granted, the pastor seemed to genuinely want to meet and discuss the post, but why would anyone want to step back into a church where the pastor's wife stirred up so much trouble and you're hearing from other members about the way the post stirred up trouble. And last, but definitely not least, the post that got me shunned from ALC: You know what I don't like? Church politics. It's in every church, creeps around, and eventually a pattern is noticed. Every church we've been to, or heard about, plays the game. Every church has a mission and plays the politics to get there. Unfortunately, when you or someone you know gets caught in the crosshairs of those politics, you begin to look at the church differently. Do you ever wonder why people stop going to church? I don't. Most people don't want to play the game. They want to go get the message and go home. A few will decide to volunteer here or there until they catch wind of underlying politics and then leave. Others make it years, for the love of ministry runs deep and it pleases them...but eventually, they feel the politics too. It seems no one can really escape it, except for the select few in the inner circles. And for those that make it years, those church politics deliver a devastating blow. Church and politics don't mix. Never have and never will. People will always get hurt in the end and that is NOT what we should be aiming for as a church. It shouldn't be about who you know, it shouldn't be about who you're related to, it shouldn't be about anything other than God and HIS mission. It breaks my heart for those in the crossfire, I've been there and hate to see others there. We need to pray for our churches and their direction, we need to get out of the mega church mindset and go back to knowing the congregation, their struggles, and their needs.

They had veils and plastic rosaries available to borrow, and there were doughnuts after mass. Many people stayed and chatted after mass outside as well. Just from reading the flyers, you can tell how focused they are on serving all the different communities and demographics of their community from teenagers to single moms. I visited on the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity where the focus was baptism. A very fitting day to visit. If I lived closer, I would visit all the time. Highly recommend, but arrive at least 10 minutes early. They have a lot of parking, but it's still packed.

Several large paintings of Saint John the Baptist hang in the sanctuary. We were hiking the nearby Appalachian Trail and decided to go to the 10:30 Sunday Mass. Since were kind of stinky, we sat in the back about 25 minutes before Mass. Looked like the pews would hold about 500. Little did we know it would soon be standing room only, as ushers packed us all in. Lots of young families (large, Catholic families!) The Mass was traditional, in Latin and English complete with about 8 acolytes and incense. The priest did a fine job on the homily, teaching while using scripture to point out his message. The parishioners were very welcoming. Overall, glad I went and had a chance to worship in this jewel of a church.
