Is Valley a Christian school in name only? If you are thinking about placing your child here, I can give you some insight. My wife and I were so green her freshman year. I could barely contain my excitement. Giving our daughter the gift of a private school education seemed out of reach, but Valley was accommodating. We made it happen, and that year was epic! My daughter played four sports and did really well in all of them. She finished with a 3.9 GPA, and we could not have been happier. Then, prior to classes starting sophomore year, at the girls' volleyball tryouts, we encountered something that we had only heard about and, transparently, did not believe existed: The Dutch Mafia! A quick history lesson: Valley was founded in 1935, and its historical ties trace back to Dutch immigrant communities in the local area (like Bellflower and Cerritos) who established it as a Reformed Christian day school. Some of the families who founded the school are still there--hence the term "Dutch Mafia." Now, back to the volleyball tryouts. There are a lot of details that could tell the story, but to keep an already long review a bit shorter, I will say this: based on how they separated the girls, we knew who was going to make which team. To say it was NOT based on ability, skill, or team needs is an understatement. I couldn't believe what was happening, but I should have known what was to come because of a foreshadowing incident during freshman season. Our starting libero was taken out in the middle of a game and had to give her jersey to the backup--not because she was playing badly or missing balls, but because the backup's mother complained to the head coach that her daughter wasn't getting playing time. That player's mother is a teacher at Valley, and our starter never went back into the game. When the team lists were emailed out, we understood what was happening. Returning players and incoming freshmen who were related to staff and coaches were placed on Varsity, even though they frankly were not that good. Girls who had been in the program since freshman year were not even given roster spots because they were seniors, and Varsity was the only option for them. I did the math after the lists came out: 44% of the available positions were given to freshman players. So, the incoming "Dutch" girls were so good that they took up almost half the roster spots across all three teams? Not likely. There was also some controversy that ended up getting the Varsity head coach, Jeff Ornee, unfairly dismissed. I found out later that the loudest voice calling for his termination was the coach who took over sophomore year. She completely destroyed the program with team selections based on clear nepotism and favoritism. She is a teacher at the school, by the way, and did such a horrible job that she quit, leading to another teacher taking over. I had high hopes, but the current coach is even worse. My daughter was placed on the frosh/soph team for her first two years and JV her junior year. She didn't make the Varsity team her senior year, and by now, you know why. By that time, she was completely burnt out on volleyball and having breakdowns, feeling like she wasn't good enough. Thankfully, she transitioned to an uncoveted sport (track & field) and no longer wanted to play volleyball for Valley or her club team. Our story is uniquely ours, but I can tell you that it is not the only one, and by far not the worst. I have firsthand knowledge of others, but those stories are not mine to tell. I would like to say that the teachers, security, and staff working behind the front desk at Valley Christian School were some of the sweetest and kindest people I've met. This review is not a reflection of them, their hard work, or their good hearts. Valley has some awesome traditions (Christmas time is epic), and if you choose to send your child here, they will receive a top-notch education and awesome Christian experiences--as long as they don't play one of the coveted sports. read more

Valley Christian is a fantastic school system. The school is dedicated to teaching a Christian worldview and stands for biblical principles. Staff and students are friendly and welcoming. My two children currently attend the preschool and elementary school campuses. I plan to send them through all of middle and high school as well. I have taught at the high school for over 15 years and have watched the school continue to grow toward excellence in all areas and create high achieving graduates. read more

Teachers truly care for the whole student. I have confidence my kids will leave college ready based on the skilled teaching and experience that is so evident upon entering the classroom. More importantly, the school plays an active role in spiritual formation with spiritual retreats, impactful chapel speakers, passionate teachers who love the Lord, and Bible studies. I'm amazed that at a seemingly small Christian school the amount of opportunity there is for my kids to find a place to belong --from sports, robotics, mission trips, Broadway showcase, a variety of AP courses and beyond, this school has so much to offer. I came to visit for a soccer game only to have my ears overblown by the open air weight room next door. They are blasting extreme bass with rap music. It is truly offensive and absolutely not Christian. Have some respect for the spectators watching their children play soccer next door. read more

My son went here from 6th-12th. This review is an observation with some personal experiences. Starting in elementary school, the staff was so nice and welcoming, greetings parents in the mornings, but only if you were a light shade of skin color. It was so obvious the school had to address it and send an email to all parents. I know students of color who would never get points for class participation because the teachers would not allow them to participate(raising their hand and just not calling on them). Incidents where students did racist acts only to get it all swept under the rug. During tryouts, when they separated the kids that were making the team vs those that had no chance, you could clearly see which side was darker than the other. But the most egregious thing I witnessed, 1 student that had a higher gpa, more ap classes, more honor awards, all around the student more deserving of scholarships, was snuffed when they gave more scholarships to the 2nd top student(a European American student). That being said, my child did benefit from attending here. The school has its problems, and i don't see them getting in better in this current political climate. read more

It's better than your average Progressive/Communist high school in CA but not by as much as you'd think (especially when you consider you are in some sense paying for an attenuated version of California's mandated D.E.I. indoctrination) We fled Los Alamitos High in the satanic Covid Summer of 2020. VCHS had mask-exemption policies and did not mandate The Experimental Vaccine™. (We stayed in the "Control Group" and remain proudly and correctly unvaccinated to this day. We may be "lambs of God", but that does not oblige us to be sheep). We were hopeful that a Christ-focused HS would be of more benefit to our son than the degenerate secular-humanism promoted in CA. We found that the upper rungs of the admin at VCHS are "Progressive™". You will still get Leftist rhetoric revolving around "Female Empowerment", "Compliance with authority", "Racial grievance", Safe-T™, "Free Speech/Hate Speech™", "Diversity™", etc. You will still come across individual liberal teachers pushing reading lists featuring "homosexual exploration" and divisive "identity/racial politics" onto Christian kids (something my wife and I found particularly disappointing). Don't get me wrong Our son met/made some very good friends that I think he will keep for the rest of his life. (The 'dating life' however is basically non-existent; a troubling societal trend everywhere, as Western birth rates crash under the influence of Progressive™ dogma). There are some EXCELLENT conservative teachers at Valley Christian as well, and VCHS has a very good robotics program which has served as our son's launchpad to Purdue Engineering....but the conservatives don't run VCHS, and the Liberal admins are convinced they've 'nailed it'. They haven't, but they won't hear otherwise of course. The problem is, you cannot be BOTH a Christian and an apologist for Marxism-lite, which is what Progressive political ideology is. Don't let anyone gaslight you into believing that VCHS is an apolitical oasis of Christian Spirituality. Our first meeting at VCHS with the Principal involved a reference to the "Tulsa Massacre". Our last interaction with VCHS at our son's graduation involved a racially divisive reference to "Brown Vs Board of Education". We attend church regularly (traditional service)... I would say VCHS is a good fit for somewhat liberal/well-meaning, but perhaps not particularly 'discerning' parents, who enjoy Coldplay/U2 "Praise Team" Sunday service and don't mind shelling out for HS on top of paying their regular property taxes. If we could could go back in time would we go there again? The Spirit said "VCHS"..... for us it remains God's Will. PS: bring back the "Crusaders" (The Crusades were a RESPONSE to centuries of muslim conquest/depravity and the West is in dire need of a new Crusading spirit if the West is to survive). Moving my children to Valley Christian I high school was a game changer. I expected it to take months, but the change in my first child was nearly instant (volleyball practices prior to school starting). She found good friends of great faith. 8 years later those friends are significant and living lives of goodness and meaning. As COVID began, we moved our youngest child to Valley Christian. He immediately recognized the kindness and love in the teaching staff, his peers, and the families. The Valley Christian schools have been a true gift to our family. My wife and I long ago agreed that there is no better way to use our limited resources. read more

Not sure about the school itself but my son just played a volleyball tournament here. And they cram two courts in there gym hardly any room for parents to sit and the courts are almost on top of each other !!! I've been to a lot of schools for tournaments and this is the worst. I want to start off by saying that the teachers and those working behind the front desk at Valley Christian School were some of the sweetest and most kind people I've met. This review is not a reflection of them or their work and good hearts. Most reading this may not find it relatable as it's from a unique perspective, but I hope it gives a reflection of how Valley Christian School officials "honored" and represented themselves. If this is how they treat their contract employees, I'd be afraid of how they treat others more heavily involved with and on their campus. My husband and his business partner were hired as contract workers last Fall. They had contract in-hand, reviewed it with those who would eventually hire them page by page, and had both the gross and monthly amounts they would charge for XYZ scope of work--invoices would go out twice a month. Everything was approved and signed-off on and everyone (school officials and hired workers alike) was thrilled for the new venture and business relationship. My husband and I were personally excited to have some consistent income. Unfortunately, however, my husband and his partner only ever received ONE payment and have yet to see the balance amounting to hundreds and thousands of dollars--they've given them months to pay it. Every time my husband scheduled a phone call just to see what the status was of a payment, they, last minute and without fail, didn't pick-up the phone or would reschedule, but would never actually talk. Every. Single. Time. And, of course, when my husband's business partner finally got a face-to-face meeting with them, they refused to hand over payment and had the audacity to ask for more work from them. Christian or not, that's not how "this" or this world works. My husband and his partner should have stopped providing them services after not receiving a second payment, but, being the nice guys they are, they believed VCS WAS BETTER THAN THAT and would eventually be forthright and honest. But that day never came. What a sad, disappointing and backwards representation of Christ. This is why Christians are often classified as "hypocritical" (i.e. want, want, want, but no give...). To Valley Christian schools, a couple tips: 1.) If this is the case and you don't have the money, DON'T ASK OR EXPECT "FREE" THINGS or expect to get "FREE" LABOR. My husband and his partner are running a business--not a charity. They worked well into the night and weekends (I even volunteered my evening hours) to accommodate you and they never even received the bare minimum: AN AGREED UPON AMOUNT SIGNED ON THE DOTTED LINE. It's sad to see you take advantage of them like that. 2.) It would be different if you realized you could not afford it after all, had to terminate the contract and paid the balance, but no. You let it run on and on and on; no reason, no explanation, just cowardice and dishonesty. And just for fun, why not refer to Luke 14:28-30 (summary: do not be foolish with your funds). Or, better yet, how about Leviticus 19:13: "You shall not oppress your neighbor or rob him. The wages of a hired worker shall not remain with you all night until the morning." Well, that money you kept over night until morning for the last almost year was going to be huge and very helpful for us. We really needed the funds and were relying on this income to help with bills. You guys screwed us all over. Since, apparently, all you do is want, want, want, I am more than delighted to give, give, give this novel of a review. read more

We now have one graduate, 2020 and a junior. Both have done well in school and have appreciated their committed teachers. Both of my boys have enjoyed playing football and serving on the school's Praise Team. From academics to extracurricular activities to a Christ centered education, VCHS stands out! I am from Las Vegas. I went there last night 11-8-19 to watch the playoff game against Pasadena high school. Since I have never heard of the school I visited the website. I liked what I read. During the game I ordered the tri tip sandwich. That sandwich is absolutely amazing. One of the best tri tip sandwiches I have had. If you go to a football game there the tri tip sandwich is item to order. My interaction with people and alum there was beyond pleasant. Everyone I encountered was super nice. If I lived in the area based on the website and school's values, I would send my child there. read more

I have to begin this review with the obvious. Why is the mascot a Crusader?! The crusades were responsible for roughly millions upon millions of deaths in the name of Christianity. I know a lot of Christians claim that the crusaders were not Christians, etc. Whatever. Valley Christian is the first institution to be PROUD of being a Crusader! It's sort of baffling. Either they don't have a grasp on what the crusades truly meant or (more likely) are simply proud to a member of this group. It's pretty much the equivalent of having an all Muslim school and calling the mascot the Al Qaedas . Most people are ashamed of their religion's extremists, but, moving on... There is a huge push for waiting to engage in sex until you are married. That's fine. It's a religious school. I know at least two people (boys) who engaged in abortions and were still allowed to play in the chapel band, lead student government, and overall continue to be heralded as perfect students. Yes, many of the teachers knew about this. However, when one girl became pregnant and decided to "do the right thing" and keep the baby. She was promptly kicked out. A few weeks later during a chapel service about purity until marriage her face was flashed for a moment on the huge screen...before the entire school. This is exactly the reason that so many people choose abortion over not having an abortion: avoiding people slut shaming you into getting one anyway. But I digress...what of this girl's privacy? Why did she leave if she was still going to be bullied and gossiped about (by teachers, no less!). Much of the underclassmen didn't know anything about the pregnancy until that chapel. It was wrong. But it was incredibly wrong because it was done by teachers that I thought I trusted until that moment. This was the day I really started questioning why I was attending this school. There's no cafeteria. Students sit on floors...outside. No auditorium. No swimming pool. No wrestling team. There was a gymnastics team when I went there but it was sort of on it's last limbs since there's no "gymnastics room" on campus. No school nurse. Out of 4 buildings, 2 have no air conditioning or heat...no joke. Zero black faculty. Annual tuition is the same as the annual tuition at UCLA. read more

I went here K-12. I have never been bullied so much in my life. Yes, there are some great people at VCS. But if I am going to be picked on and harassed daily, I dont want it to be from someone who the next day leads a chapel on worship and committing to the lord. This school left a great first impression on me. It's very clean and lovely and the campus is very nice and clean. The staff was very nice and helpful and the campus was easy to navigate and easy to get to. Overall it's a great campus with great staff and faculty. It is a very good school. However there are a few things that I don't like. 1. Not every teacher is good and nice. Some teachers really like to help students to do well in class, some teachers are not. One class might be taught by several teachers. Of course no one can choose teacher! 2. Not every student has the chance to get into AP and honor classes due to the limited spot and requirements. There is no honor point on GPA for Honor students who are freshmen and sophomore. 3. Attending this school costs a lot of money!! If you wish your child to participate in different activities in addition to missionary and academic trips, save money!! 4. They do not allow some high school students who are not 18 to get a driver license due to "safety reason". (Not kidding!) School bus is not available for all school activities, events, half days, testing days, finals week! You may need someone to drive your child home very often if your child don't drive. 5. The school does not send progress report quarterly. You have to check PowerSchool to track your student. They only send report after each semester. Most teachers never give students comments on report cards. 6. Once you join this school system, your personal information will be published to all school families, including your address, phone number, children's names. read more

Although I've been out of school for some time, I do have professional dealings with the school and their students. They are an outstanding school, and this is where I would want my kids to attend. Amazing school. I came here 10th-12th grade and I highly recommend it. I made friends that encouraged my walk with the Lord. The teachers are amazinggggg at their job. They also take the time to really listen and talk with their students about everything including religion. A def. plus. Something that is frowned upon at Public schools. Sports are a big deal there so there's plenty of teams your children can join. There are those kids that are bad influences but all schools have them. I had friends that came all the way from Yorba Linda, Torrance and San Pedro. We all loved it. After 6 years, I can see many of my old friends are still close friends. A lot of them went to Valley Christian School since elementary so they have that special bond. The only problem I have is the tuition! Every year they seem to raise it. I have a two year old daughter. I would love for her to go to that school. It seems like there is a lot of opportunity that can come from that school. They recently opened a preschool so I am very excited! If budget allows, I will def. send my daughter(and future children) there preschool-high school, no questions asked. read more

This is an amazing High School. We left a top ranked public High School and wow what a difference Valley Christian has made in our daughter. The teachers are top notch, the staff is amazing and the students are friendly. This school has exceeded our expectations and we have seen extremely positive advancements in our daughter since attending. Daughter transferred into this school as a freshman and my son as a sixth grader. Both being straight A students involved in Student Government and sports, it was extremely important to have a well rounded school with many opportunities available to them. Both the kids are thriving and eager to go to school every day. Thankful for this school. read more
