I've been blessed by the skin gods with (mostly) unblemished skin that has never been bullied by acne or oil and receives compliments daily. What I am cursed with, though, is a mole above my right eyebrow. It isn't dark, super big or terribly noticeable; but I am a working model and they always edit the mole out of photos. Cindy Crawford would be appalled! I have been considering pulling an Enrique Iglesias and getting the mole shaved off and the procedure was approved by my Medi-Cal insurance. Unfortunately, Medi-Cal always refers patients to the WORST doctors and the dermatologist I was sent to was no different with terrible bedside manner. I decided to find a dermatologist on my own and pay out of pocket which is how Yelp led me to Valley Dermatologist Associates. Valley Dermatologist Associates won the bid for mole removal due to the positive Yelp reviews and the price check game in comparison to other dermatologist offices I called. If you are unfamiliar: a consultation is required first which seems to run between $120-$150 (I was quoted $120 by Valley Dermatologists) and then even more moolah is required for any required procedures. I made my appointment with VDA but be prepared to leave messages: they never actually answer the phone so there is no immediate contact. Once you leave a voicemail, they do call you back, however. A bit annoying to have the contact dragged out. Although located in the slightly uncouth neighborhood of Vanowen/Sepulveda in Van Nuys on the campus of Valley Presbyterian Hospital; VDA is a husband/wife clinic run by Dr. Greg Nelson and Dr. Helen Nam so the family-vibes do seep through to the patients. Parking is available behind the building and with the hospital lots but careful as the small alley driveway (off of Vanowen) is easy to miss and VDA didn't notify me of the parking situation when making the appointment.  VDA really should inform new patients. In fact, VDA never called the day before to remind me of the appointment which is odd as ALL medical offices seem to do in LA. I arrived to a spacious lobby - somewhat basic and standard with one reception window, magazines to entertain and (slightly dirty) chairs. Intake was easy even though they were training a new staff member, Joseph. But then came the waiting game. My appointment was at 2:30 and I didn't get let into an examination room until approximately 2:55 pm. Joseph was amazing even though fresh meat; and was both friendly and professional asking my medical background. He's going to make a great team member. But then I had to wait and WAIT some more. 3:10pm rolled around and Dr. Nelson still wasn't in the room (which I now know is because they are understaffed). The waiting game was worth it as Dr. Nelson is INCREDIBLE. First off... he is handsome as hell but I won't go deeper into that inappropriate territory. I told Dr. Nelson about the other dermatologist who seemed to discard me too quickly and about my mole concerns. Dr. Nelson confirmed that the mole is not cancerous with nothing to worry about. In fact, he said he sees no reason that I even have to remove it at all unless I cosmetically want it for my modeling. Listen, business is business and Dr. Nelson could have tried to upsell to make his profits and act like removing this mole was critical. Instead, he gave me confidence that it doesn't affect my physical looks and is unnecessary. I truly appreciated his looking out for my best interest over that of his business. If that isn't amazing enough; Dr. Nelson didn't rush me and answered all questions regarding the mole removal, aftercare and even visually inspected my body for any other skin concerns. His bedside manner is A+! Dr. Nelson topped it with the cherry of not charging me for the consultation! Zero dollars! Is this guy descended from heaven or what?! I decided to go ahead and make an appointment for the mole removal with his wife who specializes in the cosmetic end of things. The next day, after much internal deliberation, I agreed it really was pointless and a cost (about $250) that isn't dire. I called to cancel the procedure and then called AGAIN the day after that because there is a tan skin growth on the back on my ear I forgot to show Dr. Nelson (and I don't believe he saw it, either). I went ahead and made another appointment unfortunately a month into the future as I learned about the understaffing issue.  Let's hope that visit is equally as easy-peasy. Even with its technical errors of a phone tag game, parking confusion (apparently they validate) and a poor neighborhood; these are very minor in relation to the amazing bedside manner and friendliness of Dr. Nelson who truly seems to care about his patients, awesome customer service from newbie Joseph and the affordable low prices in comparison to other offices I called. If you have a skin issue and your medical insurance doesn't refer you to the trolls I am sent to; be sure to choose Valley Dermatologist Associates. read more

They saw me last minute when I didn't have an appointment and were able to squeeze me in. I had a particularly inflamed pimple that I thought was infected (it wasn't but I wanted to be safe). Dr. Nelson gave me a cortisol injection in that pimple that also expressed genuine concern that I wasn't using enough sunscreen on my neck which was funny, not that he's incorrect but he didn't know me at all so him being forthcoming like that was sweet. He also wrote me a prescription for Differin in case I couldn't find any online which I've been trying. I think I will go back here in August as he seems to really know his stuff and the staff is friendly and accommodating. read more

Dr. Nelson is one of a kind.. it's very rare to find Doctors nowadays who listen to you carefully and provide you with the best advices. He is very patient and very humane. Usually most of doctors now are seeing patients like they monitoring machines but it's not the same with this doctor, he treats patients carefully and listen to your concerns. Also, he seeks to provide you with the most affordable medication in case you are a cash patient. I have an insurance that cost me 550$ a month but it is useless so mostly i prefer not to use it so i avoid overcharging from the insurance providers. I came here about a year ago. The visit with the doctor is great but when his office to called to give me my results, they gave me another woman's for the test done on her chest area. They didn't confirm my name first, and just gave the results. I said no this isn't right, you mixed up the results, the doctor did skin tests only on my thigh and legs. They insisted it was my results when the name and tested area were not correct. Seriously, talk about patient confidentiality. They said they would call again for the correct results. I never heard from them again. I didn't bother going back over there. It's very disappointing. read more

Been using Dr. Nelson for at least 10 years. Nothing major (fortunately) but I like to get the skin looked over about once a year. Dr. Nelson is very detail-oriented and is in no hurry to look fast and move on. He really looks at everything which could be of concern. I point out little blemishes or peculiarities, which he looks at, but he even finds things I did not know about! Once, needing minor surgery to remove a skin growth, Dr. Nam took over. She was very careful and delicate about doing the job right. They even followed up after the surgery to be sure no cancer cells lingered. And it's time for another checkup for me. read more

He was by far the best priced at $85 (skin tests included), compared to the usual $125 and up. I must say that Alex was floored by how well his appointment went, from the professional staff, reasonable price, and very attentive doctor. Dr. Greg Nelson is awesome. I dont live close by; its a 35-45 minutes away and not necessarily the most convenient for me but all i can say is that its well worth the drive. I can go to someone or somewhere thats much closer to my house but choose not to for multiple reasons. I know of him because my older brother used to go to him in high school which was about 20 years ago--- recommended and really really liked him. He is still in practice and has alot of experience. I have been going to him for a while (maybe ten years) i dont know exactly how many but long enough for me to keep wanting to come back! Perla, Priscilla and Julie who work in the office (front desk/reception/ ma) have always been polite and greeted me with a smile, attended to my needs and have always done their best to accomodate, no matter what the situation is. As far as appointments, its best to schedule as far in advanced as possible because he does get booked. If your appointment is for 9am theres a chance you wont be seen right at 9am and may have to wait 15 mins give or take.... but WELCOME TO HEALTH CARE OF AMERICA, lol. Where is there not a wait in regards to anything that has to do with health care??? because I dont know of any. Not once have i ever felt like "just a number." I have never felt rushed through any of my appointments with this doc. He was always answered my questions very thoroughly. Dr. Nelson is friendly & easy going, professional and has always had excellent bedside manner, knowledgable and informative, compassionate but most importantly listens to his patients and cares about their concerns. i have received nothing but great care and experiences every time i come here. My skin on the other hand has been through alot, mostly in regards to my struggles with acne. It has been a whirlwind of emotions for me over the years and timeline of trial and error. I have tried everything under the sun OTC, numerous diff kinds of prescription creams, oral antibiotics, birth control, diuretics, all the way up to accutane. Dr. Nelson has been a great doctor through it all. I would brag about and highly recommend this doctor to anyone. I went to Dr. Nelson a year ago to get treatment for dry patches at the corner of my mouth. Dr. Nelson gave me prescription for Mometasone ointment (a topical steroid) to apply for 2 weeks. I did as he told me and the patches were gone for few weeks. But after 1-2 month, the same area started getting dry and itchy. I used moisturizers but nothing seemed to work. It started getting red, itchy and burning. I did online research for few months and found out that I was having topical steroid withdrawal. I started taking vit. C, vit E, fish oil supplements for faster healing and used expensive moisturizers but the redness around my mouth still persists. Before I started using the topical steroids, I was able to cover the dry patches with vaseline or moisturizers but now it does not go away whatever I do. The area around my mouth is red, itchy and burning. I just want to warn all the people. Donot use topical steroid on face because the skin on face is very sensitive. The facial skin will get worse, red and itchy and you will have to deal with it for more than a year to get the normal skin back!! read more
