He took our order and everything was made fresh. The fried chicken is better than KFC, no doubt about it. You get actual chicken pieces, chicken pieces you can recognize. The coating the crisp and salty and sooo good. The combo comes with a generous box of potato wedges cooked to perfection, gravy, and a small side salad, I chose slaw and my boyfriend chose macaroni. This place is unassuming but I was so impressed with the quality and taste of the food. It is really worth a stop if you're ever passing through Mattawa.

The guy working there, has a shed in the back and smokes pot and consumes pot on the job and I'm wondering if that's why everything is going to shit. The three restaurants in Powassan we attempted to visit were closed or takeout only. Second efforts revealed this little gem upon my search via Yelp. So a few things to note as I write this, the restaurant has 10 tables, including three booths, patio and probably seating for 34 people max, most seats have butts in them minus the patio. Upon arrival, we were told that service to each would take at least half an hour. However the server (who turned out to be the owner) put a rush order in for fries for the kids. Nat bad at all they were fresh. The kids ordered fingers, I ordered the double fish and chips. The fingers, were definitely some Sysco product that were well, Okish. Slightly above average from a frozen box. The fish ended up being haddock which was above my expectations and my daughter who isn't a big fan, loved it. The missed opportunity here is to source some local Bass or Walleye, and do it up in that solid panko they were using. The wait for food was unbearably long. I'm going to assume that the owner and cook (even though I saw two other employees) were not accustomed to being this busy. Maybe the equipment was not intended for that volume of people in a short span. The owner was very kind, she unfortunately wasn't on top of getting water for the kids or topping up my coffee. In the end the slow service was the worst part, a 2.75 to 3 the food a solid 4, the customer service was a 4.75, Mixed bag, but was made positive.

Our friend reassured us that we made a huge mistake. We had to go back and give it a shot. We stopped in for lunch (we heard line ups at dinner are huge) - I ordered the ravioli special of the day and my fiancée ordered a lunch salad. The ravioli was incredible. It was laden with beef tenderloin and veggies galore in a rose sauce that I had to dip my bread in to sop up all of the pieces. My fiancées salad was equally insane. It was almost like a pasta sauce on a hearty garden salad that was very tasty. The meals leave you more than satisfied. The pasta doesn't leave you with that heavy pasta dinner feeling with the good mix of veggies that came with the pasta and the salad feeling like you should have ordered a pasta if you ordered the salad with the hearty meat and appropriate level of dressing on it. So we ordered an order one escargot and an order of fish and chips to share. The atmosphere was beautiful with a lovely view of the water, shaded patio and cool breeze. The wait staff were all very attentive and so friendly. The food arrived quickly and piping hot. Starting with the escargot. Beautifully presented, bubbly, cheesy but not too cheesy with some nice bread for soaking up all of the garlic butter. Each morsel was perfectly done, not rubbery and the addition of caramelized onions was wonderful. They did not last long. The fish and chips came with four pieces of pickerel that were battered in a very light and crispy batter that was perfect. It complemented the fish nicely. And the fries... fresh... hand cut, skin on potatoes. Now I admit I have not met a potato I didn't like but these fries are right up there in the top 10. Tai Pan China Cafe in Mattawa is one of these places. We always like to start with a Won Ton soup. It seems to be the best measure of how much a restaurant puts into their cooking. Called Wong Ton soup at Tai Pan you will get a piping hot bowl of delicious broth with about four won tons. It is an obviously home made soup. With lots of chopped green onion and special ingredient chopped lettuce. This soup pulled up the rating of everything else. We also each had an egg roll, and shared a BBQ Pork fried rice, Hunan Beef and General Tao Chicken. We were asked if we wanted medium heat or hot. My wife answered medium. We should have ordered hot, it was a little bland for our tastes. But they were both good with lots of meat in each dish. The service was excellent, the woman serving us was in constant motion. They were making a lot of take out orders (on a Sunday night). The restaurant is old and worn but overall seemed pretty clean. We will certainly stop for this won ton soup again next time through Mattawa.
