If given the opportunity to choose an attorney again I would strongly suggest a different law firm representing me. Nothing went right. For months I would receive no calls letting me know the status of my case, and when I would call Van Den Huevel Law, they would charge me fees to tell me that they haven't heard anything from the court. Finally, after 19 months, and five months before my previous call to them, I called again. When I called it seemed as though they were surprised to hear from me as they had forgotten my case. The next day they called me. This is a first! They called me. They told me my case finally has a date set for a hearing in just a couple weeks. Great! I finally have my day. However, on that day before the court in a video hearing the judge asked Howard why it is that his office had not contacted the court about this case. Howard in his defense, not my defense said that he had been waiting for the courts to contact him. And this continued on for several minutes before returning to focus on the purpose of that days hearing in which the judge confirmed it had been too long a period and that his case with the court is dismissed without prejudice. I was very appalled with this revelation. After the hearing I was asked by Howard if I would like to appeal the courts decision and bring my case to the appeals court of Michigan. Wow! I couldn't believe that this man who just failed me bold fased in front of a judge would ask for me to let him represent me further. In appeals court. I told him NO, and I will talk to him further after at a later time. One week later I received a letter from the court letting me know my date for a hearing in appeals court. ONE WEEK LATER I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM THE COURT LETTING ME KNOW MY DATE FOR AN APPEALS HEARING. WHAT!?! I immediately contacted his office telling them to stop with the appeal, in which they advised me that I needed to come to their office and sign a paper that relieves them of any further duties. All of which they continued to charge me fees for, INCLUDING THE APPEAL THEY FILED WITH THE COURTWHICH I NEVER WANTED AFTER HEARING AND SEEING THE JUDGE REPREMAND HOWARD FOR INCOMPETANCE. Why would I want an attorney who failed me continue to represent me? There is no chance in hell I would again get treated the way I did by this firm. I continued to fight against the additional charges/fees applied to me for them filing an appeal. Five years later. I don't understand such a breakdown in communication. And many payments paid through their online portal CLIO were not recorded as paid. Money out the window. read more

Over the course of the last 7 or 8 years, my family has hired Justin and Howard to handle some various legal cases for us. The first of which, was a custody case pertaining to my brother that ended favorably for him. The second was my personal custody case which did not end unfavorably, however, it did not meet the standard at which I would consider hiring them again. While this hits close to my heart, my concerns with Justin and Howard aren't from an emotional standpoint. My concerns are from an ethical standpoint, which, after further investigation into their reputation, are will known within the Kent County court system. Upon discussions with officers of the court (and, no Justin, this isn't libel or defamation as you will likely claim) the reputation these two have accumulated are that of "liars", "unethical", "berating", "laughable", "unreliable". These adjectives used to describe them, along with the gross negligence of seeking the truth in their case against my mother, couldn't be more accurate in my own experiences. Justin and Howard failed to put together coherent and factual sentences. They failed to read and respond ethically or timely. Filed the same motions 4 different ways costing an obscene amount of money on frivolous legal fees. Howard failed to show up to a court date on time during my own custody case. While myself, opposing counsel and my ex husband sat waiting for him to arrive only AFTER I called him to find out where he was and why he wasn't in court. Both Howard and Justin fails to communicate timely with opposing counsel in my case, did not file court documents timely, and when sending me documents to review, they were full of errors both grammatical AND factual. Additionally, the information placed on court record about my family can and may be used in a civil lawsuit against their firm for libel, gross unethical misuse of the judicial system and complaints filed with the State of Michigan Bar Association.
