    There clearly stellar record

DEAR Marina... I explicitly asked to speak to the owner end I have 3 recorded videos that I already submitted to the health department. Please do not try to discriminate and lie yet again and bluntly dismiss my legitimate concern. I uploaded pictures of exactly two of your staff who one of them claimed to be the owner. Disobeying and disregarding the Americans Disability ACT you should be ashamed of your employees. Instead of coming on here to bash me and claim this never happened, you should teach your employees that harassment and discrimination is unacceptable in the United States and I will make sure of it that your cafe will answer for it. Little did you know but the person with us who witnessed everything is a very well known lawyer, and the whole incident was very clearly documented. Claiming you never recieved bad reviews regarding your hygenie - well check your reviews again. Almost every one mentions how filthy the place is. Very nice to see your actual violations - live mice in establishment. We were denied service with our service dog. OWNER AND WORKERs ARE BOTH DISGUSTING AND RUDE. Educate your employees on the law and how to speak with clients. Refused to allow a 75 year old man with a service dog into the premises. Discrimination at its finest, I will be calling the health department so they can inspect what a dirty and disgusting establishment you run. Hope this place gets shut down.

Vanka Cafe is the quintessential Russian eatery in south Brooklyn. Vanka is a great place to come with a group of friends or family to have some solid Russian comfort food. The prices are very reasonable, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming and it's BYOB! Some of the great items I like to order here are salad "Olivier", pickled herring with boiled potatoes, mushrooms "julienne", home fried potatoes with mushrooms, Khachipuri, and beef tongue. And these are just the hot and cold appetizer options. Some of the tasty entrees I've sampled here are chicken kebab, pork kebab, chicken schnitzel with sunny side egg, grilled salmon in cream sauce, the beef stroganoff is pretty good and my favorite, the chicken Kiev. All these great options come with a side of mashed potatoes, or French fries or buckwheat kasha. I've been here many times and celebrated many occasions here over the years and they're consistently good quality. They're friendly and always treated us well.

A MUST if you are in the area! Traditional Tasty Inexpensive Russian Food Served up Fresh & Tasty with a Warm Friendly Attitude (non- NY & "non-Russian")! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ FOOD: Having grown up near Brighton Beach (Little Odessa), of Slovak Ancestry, well traveled, I am very familiar with Eastern European, Russian, & Middle Eastern cuisine. After I left NYC at the age 32, for Hawaii & then California, I had not had a Chicken Kiev for decades....that is until I had Vanka's EXCELLENT CHICKEN KIEV among other tasty offerings. The Chicken Kiev (see pic) was filled with tons of lovely artery clogging butter, while still maintaining a nice crunchy non-greasy exterior. It was one of the few things in NYC that it was as good, or better, than I remember from back in the day! The Cherry Dumplings were yet another stand out, that were identical to the Polish or Slovak Pierogi versions. My veggie wife did love them. On the other hand, I was not expecting the Russian style meat Pierogi would be so different, and more like a Pastry. The Chicken Soup with dumplings was just like "MOM USED TO MAKE" and was surely homemade. While we sampled our own little feast, it was nothing compared to the usual extravagant spread that a large group of Russian had behind us. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SERVICE: They were attentive, friendly, & nice, without any pressure. They communicated well in English & were really accommodating when it came to my Vege Wife's preferences. Their service & attitude was on par, or even better, than many of the fine restaurants in San Francisco. It was a big stand out in NYC, where rampant rudeness is the norm. In other words, they did make a non-Russian newcomer feel like an accepted regular in an ethic restaurant. They single handedly blew away the usual stereotypes associated with such places. We really thank the Vanka staff for making our ARTIC FREEZING NYC stay with my NY brother, much more pleasant. I only wish that we had time to frequent it many more times during our stay, but it was not possible since we were busy taking care of my extremely ill mother who also spent two weeks in NYU Medical Center in Manhattan. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ATMOSPHERE: Pleasant, clean, utilitarian, & non ostentatious. The bathroom was clean & spotless. Overall, it was ideal for a humble "mom & pop" operation. The staff was warm & friendly, & I had some nice conversations with many of them. Since we came at a off-peak time, that added to the casual atmosphere. This place stands in stark contrast to the rude or indifferent attitude & unhygienic Russian Deli that is a few blocks away...were their hot bar is exposed to whatever & has many items spoiling without proper heat (or cold)...that place must pay off the health inspectors. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In Summary, GREAT Handcrafted Homemade FOOD & SERVICE, in a friendly local peaceful Neighborhood setting... SO GO HERE FOR RUSSIAN FOOD !!! It is in my opinion, far better than most places in Brighton Beach where they are not anywhere near as nice & where the hustle & bustle, will stress you out! Again..... Thanks VANKA !!!!!! P.S.- See menu/pics for great extensive Take-Out/ Delivery options at amazing prices!

this is called "pelmeni" which can be eaten in one bite. Each one is the size of my pinky and the amount of oil it was in was crazy.

The food was ok, nothing special TBH, the service is extremely slow. And no parking near by. It's ok for families dinner but nothing to crazy.

This place is great in many ways. This establishment offers great food, customer service and wonderful drinks. I have decided to visit this resturant, because I wanted to eat something different. I am glad I visited this place, because I wanted to eat everything after my first meal. I am happy with my selection and I know I will return with friends. If you decide to visit this place, do not hesitate to ask someone for their recommendation, because if you decide on your own it make take a while. Why? Everything is prepared nicely on your plate. Trust me, you will begin to take many photos instantly. Recommend dishes: This is a difficult choice, because the chef prepared their meals with love. I recommend you to come here and choose for yourself. Your selection will always be the best choice.

My amazing take out meal at Vanka Cafe. Thanks Gabby for treating! ;)

My friend ordered out from this place and we ordered an assortment of dishes which included a split chicken dish, an eel salad and beef salad baked escargo baked potato gratin like dish. Taste wise, this place was amazing. Everything was exceptionally well made and it tasted like what a hearty meal would taste like. This place is inexpensive and a great place to try if you're in need of some Russian food! Yum-O

Russian speaking people really like This place because it is special: decor is outdated but cozy , service is nice and simple , food is not expensive and not fancy .If you like heavy fatty food and you do not know were to take you grandma for lunch - this is a place to go. We went here for lunch and I think their Chef had a bad day or maybe we made a wrong choice. After all ,they do not care what you think about them.

Cyrillic writing, clothes, food with wonderful smells, trays and trays of caviar, just bursting out the door. And, a Starbucks. Today, not too many Eastern European businesses are left. Now, it's banks, cellular, provider, stores urgent care, a 7-11, even a Popeyes freaking fried chicken. Oh, and the Starbucks is still there. After walking out of a very bad experience at imereti Georgian cafe down the street (see separate review) I found this place. Boy, am I glad I did. I was seated in the front. The restaurant was gorgeous. ! I could hear a beautiful voice singing, Eastern European songs in the back of the restaurant and at one point,, he switched to Elvis's "I can't help falling in love with you" in English. That made me a little emotional, because that was my late partner's and my song... Anyway, I decided to go for the crêpes with red caviar (salmon roe), and the Ukrainian borscht. Bread and butter is brought to my table. The white bread was OK, but the brown bread had a deep rich flavor. The crêpes come first, and they were amazing. The crêpes were very warm, soft and delicious. I loved the "red caviar". A little bit salty, more briny than fishy, and a wonderful explosion of flavor when the eggs "pop." in the mouth. I was very happy. Next came the borscht. It had cabbage, beets, potatoes, and either beef or pork. I'm not sure which one. The meat , beets and potatoes was very tender, and the soup was delicious and not too rich. A very satisfying flavor., the beets gave it a little bit of an earthy flavor. The sour cream that came with it, just added a creamy richness to it without overtaking the flavor of the borscht. 1000% a home run. Dinner wasn't cheap. Two dishes, two iced teas (I found out they charge for refills), and tax, and it came out to about $48 before tip, .I didn't care. I don't mind paying extra if the food is that good, and this food was absolutely beyond awesome. I would be glad to come back and try other items on the menu. Thank you!

Sheep by Barashka (or in other words rather humorously when translated Sheep by Sheep) is an Azerbaijani restaurant (specifically Gorsky) similar to Village Cafe or Baku Palace with the prices on the menu being somewhat in the middle though closer to Baku. Like those spots, you go here and have one of two experiences depending on whether someone speaks Russian/Azeri and whether you're here for a party. It's part of the experience and luckily I was part of the latter. When my part of the group arrived, there were several salads such as an avocado salad with tomato, eggplant salad (basically the same thing as Turkish Soslu patlıcan,) and an Achuchuk salad (tomato and onion based.) There was also herring which was tasty. Soon arriving were some hot appetizers. There were two variations of Kutab/Qutab which is essentially a flatbread either stuffed with meat or with greens with both being outstanding and in my opinion a bit better than the other spots I mentioned. There was also potatoes with mushrooms which was okay (I prefer more of a crisp) as well as Khachapuri or cheese bread which was salty and delicious though perhaps a bit too buttery. The main dishes were the standouts. The sturgeon kabobs were outstanding with very tender flaky fish which paired nicely with the pomegranate molasses/narsharab found commonly in the region as well as another cold sauce which I believe was tomato based. In terms of meat, their specialty is chalahach or in other words baby lamb chops. These were meaty, tender, and some of the best I've ever had. The lulya kabob or ground lamb kebab was also tender and delicious and I would recommend them. The rest of the meat was also good but these were definitely the best. I don't remember having dessert. The food overall here was delicious and I can see why this has become a preference for them. There is apparently live music here but they weren't in that night which I didn't mind as it was easier to talk. Good food (especially the main dishes) and friendly staff. Would go back for another party.

For $4, I added the bacon/kielbasa/onion topping, which came in a little cup; it's worth it. Both pierogi options were great, but I actually thought the BEC was the star of the show. The egg was not runny and the bacon was chopped very fine; the filling was seasoned well with salt and pepper. My husband really enjoyed the short rib pierogi. Next time, I'll try the potato one. Service was fast and the prices were reasonable. The space is very retro with interesting art on the wall. Price-wise, it's very fair! And you can taste to quality and heart they put into these Pierogis. Can't go wrong with any flavor. I got the lamb and it was stuffed with tender lamb pieces, no filler. And they make for great quick meals! I also snagged a box of cabbage rolls stuffed with a pork and rice filling. Simple home-y flavor and better than rolls I've gotten from restaurants. The Compot had a refreshing fruit flavor and paired so well with our meal. The service was quick, and we were able to request extra plates to share our order.

We were walking around in Greenpoint and suddenly the neighborhood turned Polish, which is super…read morebecause I love Polish things...especially stuffed cabbage. I saw a couple pointing and nodding, so I asked, is this place amazing? They said yes. We were sold. We were wanting a drink and conveniently, they had a bar. Polish beer and incredible Polish cabbage on the way to meet friends for dinner at another restaurant? Duh!! Im Jewish - not religious - but it's important because beef/rice is the norm in my world. Karczma makes a pork version which was so so good. Big fat pieces. Thick, perfectly wrapped cabbage. Juicy, flavorful filling. The sauce was bright with tomato flavor. The wagon wheel decor was a curveball, but the warm and comfy vibe in the restaurant is what mattered most. We loved it.

Well, it has been 11 years since I first reviewed this place. Time flies! I have not been here in…read moremaybe 6 years and I can tell you the food is very sad now. I got the schnitzel (breaded chicken cutlet) and it came with a side of coleslaw and mashed potatoes. You used to be able to pick two sides, but anyway... There was zero seasoning in the whole dish. The coleslaw tasty like nothing. It was full of mayo but tasted like nothing. The chicken was super dry and tasted like it had been fried yesterday and then heated in the microwave. The mashed potatoes had an annoying amount of chopped dill on top, but no salt. The biggest sadness came when I tasted the pickle soup. It is a shadow of its former self. It is light on pickles and full of under-cooked potato cubes. It was badder than bad. What is going on here? SAVE YOUR HARD EARNED CASH!

A lot of table available-huge outdoors sitting area-space for many guests. Waiter came to check on us very quickly, we order our drinks. The vine list looks bigger, than the menu. Used to Tatiana was famous for a huge selection of dishes, nowadays- just a small fraction of it. We ordered Octopus salad, Mussels and Potato with Shiitake mushrooms as cold and hot appetizers (party of 2). The vine came fast enough, my Sauvignon Blanc was in right temperature and the amount of vine was very generous! As well all our dishes. Each dish might be shared easily for 2-3 people. Octopus salad was not bad-interesting combination of greens with grilled veggies and octopus in some kind of dressing. Mussels very excellent- souse absolutely delicious and potatoes with mushrooms- OK, but not super tasty. We had to ask to bring us an extra empty plate for mussel's shells and for wet towels to clean our hands after mussels dish. Everything was delivered very quickly. Tip#1. Portions are very generous-good for 2-3 people Tip#2. The check came with 15% gratitudes including , but in the c/c bill they ask for an extra tip- be visual. We didn't pay any extra tip over already included. Overall: nice location, especially on summer, oversized portions and quick service.
