My dad knew of Kim and recommended I try talking with her. Kim listened and asked questions about everything going on in my life and with my body. She then prepared me ahead of time and let me know that some of what she did would involve heavy pressure and I might feel soreness for a couple days afterward. She worked on my whole body and even helped stretch out my hamstrings, hips, chest, etc. I felt sore for about three days after the massage but when I stopped feeling sore, the aches in my back were far less noticeable. He is very methodical in his massage, meaning he's not just massaging your back, or leg, or arm, etc. just to kill time. He is always actively looking to see where the problem areas are, and after he identifies them, he hones in and relieves the stress/tension/inflammation and doesn't move to the next spot until he's satisfied that the knots are gone or at least "broken up." Many of my hour-long massages are JUST of my neck and shoulders, because of the amount of tension I have there. What prompted me to write this review NOW is that he literally saved me yesterday, when I texted him early on Sunday morning, desperate to get a massage later in the day. I somehow managed to get a rib (or two) out of alignment and was in so much pain that it hurt to cough, laugh, sneeze, or even inhale sometimes. He of course was accommodating (as he always is) and helped relieve the tension in my muscles. Then he directed me to his chiropractor (who was excellent by the way - Dr. Terry at The Joint on Holcombe and Buffalo Speedway, but that's a different review) so that I could get my spine realigned. I just "won" the lottery that allows me to run the 2013 Houston Marathon. I've done this before so I know the score - I'll need someone to unknot my body-in-training after those long weekend runs in the fall and winter. In pursuit of a solution (using Massage Envy is a bit like playing Russian Roulette here) I started to "audition" massage therapists. I first looked for a convenient location near where I work in the Galleria Area and found that the first Google search result for "Houston massage" was Houston Massage by Sonya. I inferred from her website that at least she knew what she was talking about and scheduled an appointment via her online tool. I was more than pleased when, two days later, she got her hands on me. In the big scheme of things for a 53-year-old, I'm in pretty good shape, but she immediately sensed and understood where my trouble areas were (a minor misalignment of the pelvic girdle and somewhat shortened deltoids) and modified her approach accordingly. The massage was simultaneously effective and pleasurable, a result that more often than not does not occur when the therapist is working with deep tissue.
