The people who work here make this place worth going to even though it has been taken over by VCA. I do feel like there was an awkward crossover but I also feel like the people here are so stellar, it is still worth going to. All of the staff and vets treat my dogs as if they are the most favorite dogs they deal with, the most special dogs they deal with, the most beautiful dogs they deal with--and I know it is not true but it is nice to feel that way. lol. Nevertheless, we are on our third round of rescue dogs at the point, and we still go to Foothill over other places we have tried in the area. The new remodel has also helped the flow of the office A LOT. (p.s. the person who I commented on in my past review is gone, maybe because of their horrible bedside manner and weird upselling). read more

I've left another review but I wanted to give an update. We, after a harrowing 5 weeks had to help our dearest sweet CiCi cross over the rainbow ridge. The harrowing part had zero to do with this particular VCA hospital (who by the way we had been coming to when they were named foothill veterinary clinic before they joined the VCA company.) In any case, all the vets there, Dr. Howes, Dr. Virgen and Dr. Compton have all been beyond excellent, beyond wonderful and so kind and so considerate. As is all of the staff (and I do mean ALL) . I've never had any attitude or any kind of bad exchanges with any of the receptionist staff or the nurses or techs. Everyone has always been consistently wonderful and we have been going there since I think around 2008. Dealing with what CiCi had (carcinomatosis) was an awful thing to go through, but Dr Compton especially at this particular time went well above and beyond. We had to do multiple abdominal taps to keep her comfortable over the weeks and she was always very careful not to take too much so that she wouldn't crash afterwards. With Dr. Compton's care as well as the help of Dr. Howe and Dr. Virgen we were able to gain precious time with our girl before the time came that we had no choice but to say goodbye. Any time we took CiCi, there was never any panic in the carrier or even while she was at the vet. I do truly believe she felt safe and cared for, even during exams and procedures. Kind doctors and techs with loving hands and a tender touch. That final process of putting CiCi to sleep was obviously very emotional and painful for us but Dr Compton and her tech were so loving, kind and so gentle with us and of course with our frail CiCi, and she passed peacefully and calmly with her eyes looking up to the heavens. We are forever grateful for this vet and Dr Compton, Dr Howes and everyone there. They even give a care package to help deal with the grief after losing your most loved pet. Truly... they go above and beyond. Thank you all for being there for CiCi and all our Abbys thru the years. I cannot recommend this vet highly enough. I am extremely disappointed with my experience at VCA. I scheduled an exam for my cat a week in advance because I suspected she has ringworm and needed medical attention. When making the appointment, I specifically informed the staff that I would be out of town until Friday and needed the appointment for the following Saturday upon my return. I arrived at 11:55 AM for my scheduled appointment only to be told that it had been canceled because I had not confirmed it. At no point during scheduling was I informed that my appointment would be canceled if I failed to confirm. Additionally, I had pressed "1" to confirm when I received the automated message, but I was told that confirmation was never received on their end. What was most frustrating was that the doctor on site refused to see my cat, stating that staff had already started going home. This was despite the fact that I arrived for what I believed was a valid scheduled appointment and that they were still within their posted business hours. It is difficult to understand why staff would be leaving when appointments were still scheduled for that time. To make matters worse, I had received a voucher for this exam, and I left feeling that because this was a voucher-covered visit rather than a full-paying appointment, my sick pet's needs were not considered worth accommodating. Whether an exam is paid out of pocket or covered by a voucher, every pet deserves the same level of care and consideration. The lack of communication, unwillingness to help, and overall handling of the situation left me feeling frustrated and disappointed. VCA Foothill is by far the most unprofessional and inappropriate VCA I have ever been to. I brought my cat in for the first (and last time) for an inflamed and leaky right eye. The entire vet visit felt incredibly rushed. I was never able to get answers to my questions and it constantly felt the vet techs or vet himself were rushing out of the room or walking away. Once my cat was evaluated and given an eye test they brought him out & stated they were not able to see anything of major trauma to the eye or ulcers, etc. They were going to prescribe him an eye drop medication. That truthfully left me with more questions. What exactly is this medication for? What could cause this to happen? What happens if the eye doesn't heal? Could this be an upper respiratory infection? Yet, they continued to say "the person checking you out at the front desk can explain more." As soon as another vet tech came out I asked him all my questions. He said he "I don't know the vet said to prescribe the eye drops." I asked if I could speak to the vet & the vet tech comes back and says the vet is with a patient. I continued to state that I was confused and would like some clarity. He states "it's here on the paper ." Keep in mind my cats vet visit that day was $718.... If I have questions I would at least expect to be able to have them answered & not read them "from a piece of paper.." After continuing to say how I am unclear what the medication I am purchasing is for, he stated "do you want the medication or not?" This was such an unprofessional response & to be candid I was appalled at this service. Spending $700 to say for me to read a piece of paper is alarming & disturbing. Luckily another vet tech overheard & pulled me into a room where she fully broke down everything to me which I am extremely grateful for. Unfortunately that does not cover up the disrespectful, disappointing, and disorderly service this place has to offer. Telling the good and the bad...well I have used them years ago when they had some different vets and some different staff and I think they 'used to be better' than now. The last visit there mor recently, saw an original vet that I'd seen years ago. She was kind but in my opinion, not as knowledgeable as I think she should have been, having been in the profession for many years. I began to recall misdiagnosis from years ago and now, on a more recent visit, I believe the same again. Either that or she is recommending buying treatments that are unnecessary just to get clients to spend more money. I brought my dog in with something that just looked like maybe a 'diaper rash' but she said it was something else. I had even told her that my boy wears diapers beforehand. She recommended this really expensive stuff. I ordered that stuff but before it arrived, I'd decided to start using some vaseline 'down there' before putting the diapers on and guess what? It cleared right up. I returned that expensive stuff and my boys been good ever since. Later on, I wanted to bring him in just for a check up. What they charge for a check up was more than a check up for humans at more than $100.00 (I forget how much more but maybe $120.00). Too much. So I'm still looking for a wellness plan someplace else. I've been here twice so far and both times have been amazing! My cat saw Dr. Fisher the first time, and she was very kind and took the time to explain everything to me, since I'm a first-time pet owner. Today I saw Dr. Loo and she was also so sweet and caring. I'm a very anxious person and have a hard time trusting others with my pet's care, but I feel very comfortable and confident here. I also struggle to trim my cat's nails, but they not only trimmed his but took the time to show me how to do it myself after asking if I wanted to learn! I would note though-- my friend had a poor experience with one of the male doctors (I believe David?), but I can recommend either Dr. Fisher or Dr. Loo with full confidence! We have been bringing our pets to this location for a few years. I have always been slightly unhappy with the experiences here, but they are conveniently located for us and most of their reviews are good, so I thought it was a "me" issue. Their "bedside" manner is not good, and I do not like that they remove my pet from the room to do whatever voodoo they do in the back. I know the yada yada regarding some owners not being able to tolerate what is being done for their pets, but I am not one of those people and think giving the owners the option of whether or not they would like to keep their pets within their sights would be a great compromise. Today, my 8-pound chihuahua got ahold of an ant trap. I got it from him pretty quickly, but I was concerned about the toxicity of the ingredients. I called them immediately to ask for signs I should look for that might indicate he ingested a troublesome amount. The gentleman on the other end of the line would not answer my question but instead gave me the number for the Animal Poison Control. I called them, but they want $95 to answer a question. I called back the VCA and got the same person on the line; needless to say, I was not the nicest person. I asked him if he was aware that this number charged a fee to answer a question they, as the place where I pay an ungodly amount of money to care for my pet, should be able to answer. I asked him why they would do that instead of transferring me to someone with the relevant knowledge or training the people to work there to answer emergency questions. AVOID DR RICKARD AT ALL COSTS We had to ask for our dogs records for vaccines at another location. Looking at the records, Dr. Rickard has commented negative things on our dogs records when we denied $2000 blood work on our dog. Saying we were going to do nothing and that she had to CONVINCE us to take the medications home- which is far from the truth. My dog is perfectly fine without the added unnecessary expense and is perfectly healthy by the way. It is great to realize after a few months how these people feel about you as an owner. I have been in contact with this hospital given that the one in South Pas sometimes gets full, made an appt for my cat but due to work I wasn't able to go, however I did want to come here because I noticed this hospital is so easy to reach and their turnaround time has been excellent. So far their callback and follow up service has been quick, I even had the manager call me to follow up on an appointment and I can tell by the way the staff acts and speaks that they're true professionals and they work on a timely fashion. We have b een going to this veterinary hospital for the past 6 dogs. Two decades and it is with deep sadness to say we can not come back. As a protective dog mom I am just so bummed with how this situation was handled. Our senior dog is on prozac due to his anxiety, and no one communicated with me that he was due for a new physical exam in order to renew his medication. Dr Andrews was an angel and gave us a few pills to tide us over until his exam. Then I got jury duty and had to postpone. I then asked for a new exam date and Madison was extremely rude saying that this is out of their hands and we should have never cancelled. I said I'm sorry but jury duty is the law. She said basically this was our fault. If we hadn't found another veterinarian closer to our house today, our dog would have started detoxing from this intense psychiatric medicine. I have received good pet service here in the past. But someone here is very incompetent or just dumb. You call ahead and they tell you the put a sign up sheet outside an hour before open because they only take a certain amount of pets per day. On this morning we arrived at 630am to line up. Only to find out when they open up that the tech decided to put the list out at 545am because they saw people already waiting. Then takes the list inside not thinking to put another paper outside that says "DAY FULL" so all of us are standing thinking we have an opportunity to get in today. If your policy is to put the list out an hour before open then stick to it you moron. I adopted a kitty during Covid and I had no idea where to bring him. I searched for vets and this one popped up. I've taken him here for vaccinations and general checkups. I've always had a great experience. The staff is nice and they're so good with my kitty. They've always gotten me an appointment fairly quickly, and if they've had cancellations they've allowed me to bring him in sooner. I had one of the worst days of my life and VCA helped me get through it. My elderly dog was vomiting and just having loose stools all afternoon. I didn't think too much at first because he had a history of stomach problems and was usually fine the next day. But at 4am, we woke up to blood in his puke. During COVID it is almost impossible to see an emergency doctor. Back in May when my other puppy got sick I called nearly 15 ER's and they all said they were full. I didn't want to deal with clinics telling me that there is a 6hr wait when my dog was dying, so I decided to come to VCA first chance I could. I got there at 6:45, they open at 7:30. I was about 6th or so in line. Once they opened the sign in sheet I saw that most of the people in front of me were just here for vaccinations. I dreaded that because I was so worried about my poor baby who was 6th in line. At around 7:45 I got a call and explained my situation. After I hung up, I thought about how I would probably have to be there for a few hours. But to my surprise, I got a call about 5 minutes later telling me to bring my dog in. The nurse who took him from me told me that they wanted to see him first because they were worried about his symptoms. I was shocked. THIS is exactly how a hospital should be. The patient with the most life threatening symptoms should be seen first. Other pet hospitals could learn something from this place. Unfortunately they were not able to save them, but that was due to his old age (he was 18). I didn't want him to be poked and prodded in the last moments of his life so we just opted to let him go. The staff at VCA was kind and they helped my family and I through it all. I was able to pick up my dogs ashes a week later and they even sent me a lovely card. VCA helped me through one of the hardest days of my life and I cannot thank them enough. read more

Arrived on a Saturday mid am. Easy parking here since they have two private lots and there is street parking also. No appointments are allowed but the place is staffed with many vets here so the wait has always been little to no wait. Since I adopted at SPCA Pasadena for 14 days all exams, shots and medicine were complimentary! I saw a couple of veterinarians in my four visits and they were caring and professional. The staff at the front desk have been friendly and helpful . This VCA location seems to be busy all the time but they do a fabulous job regardless. We've been going to Foothill Veterinary Hospital for the past 5 years. It's a very busy office and often times you will have to wait to see a Dr. but it's definitely worth the wait. The front office staff and vet assistants work very hard and are also very competent. Normally we request Dr. Bell or Dr. Andrews because in our experience they are give a comprehensive exam, take the time to explain what they are doing, and most importantly our dogs love them. A few days ago we rushed one of our dogs to FVH because he was in a lot of pain and crying. Since Dr. Bell & Dr. Andrews were both on vacation, we saw Dr. Howes. She was FANTASTIC! We can't say enough good things about the level care, affection, and concern she showed towards our dog. Her "bedside" manner made me feel at ease and her ability to reassure me that my precious dog was going to be ok was comforting. I am pleased to report that my dog is doing great and back to his perky old self. Conclusion: FHV is the best place to take your family pet! read more

I have been taking my pets here for 30 years. Since VCA took over the service and outcome have declined. There is no continuity of care as you see a different vet each visit. Then the front office staff tries to interpret test results and vet notes with error due to lack of veterinary training. You are not allowed to go in with your pet. The fees are outrageous. Due to lack of action/appropriate treatment my baby's lung collapsed. She may have to have her lung removed. Looking at the same X-ray one vet said she had pneumonia but on the next visit anther vet said she didn't'. Just trying to distance themselves from responsibility. She has 4 chest X-rays there. Went from partial collapse lung to full collapse lung before they decided to treat her. read more

The doctors I've seen have always been exptremely thorough and informative, always patient and kind when it hasn't been good news. I've been coming to this VCA for a few years now. Since we're still dealing with COVID-19, the procedure changed a bit. Here is my experience... I called earlier in the day to ask what the process was like. They leave a sign-in sheet at the front of the building 30 minutes before they actually open. I went for their afternoon shift, which starts at 2pm. I got there about 20 minutes before they put the sign-in sheet out, and there were already several people waiting in line. Right on the dot at 1:30pm, the sign-in sheets were placed outside. They said they stop taking patients once the wait reaches 2 hours. Since I was at the beginning of the line, I don't know how many people ended up being on the sign-in sheet. You write the time you checked in, your name, pet name, phone number, and reason for visit. Then, at 2pm they open their clinic as usual. They'll give you a call when they are ready to take your pet inside. They'll clarify your reason for the visit during the call as well. I waited about 15mins after their 2pm opening before I got the call. Unfortunately, because of COVID, you can't go inside and you will have to leave your pet with them. It might be stressful for your pet to be away from their human for a few hours especially at the vet, but this is the best way to keep the staff and yourself safe from COVID. Then, the vet will directly give you a call when they are doing the check up. At this point, you can either wait outside in your car, run errands, or just go home. About an hour after I dropped my pets off, I got a call from the vet. Dr. Wong made the phone call check up very easy. She took the time to answer my questions and concerns and made sure I understood everything that was going on. She explained all the meds I needed and gave me options to choose from along with her expertise. It didn't feel rushed or insincere at all. It was like a regular vet visit, but over the phone. I've had her check my pets before, and I felt like it was the same as if I was in the room with her. She then told me that when they are ready for pick up, the front desk will give me a call, which took about 45 minutes. The front desk took my credit card information over the phone and told me that I can come back to the clinic as they were processing my check out. Once I got there, I gave them a call and they brought out my pets. Overall, it was a pretty smooth process. Since I only had a simple check up and to get vaccination shots and meds, it was a straight forward visit. It was nice that I was able to step away and run errands while I "waited". This might not be the case for others if their pet was going through something more serious. The front desk said that they were one of the only VCAs open in the area for walk in, so they were experiencing higher patient volume than usual. I was put on hold on the phone for a few times, but I understand that they're really busy. I suggest being patient with them as they are trying to get through as many pets as they can. I also suggest to either have someone come with you as you're waiting to sign-in. So you or the other person can stay in the car with your pet with AC running. It was in the mid-80s the day I went, and some people had their dogs under the hot sun and pavement and their cats in a carrier as they all waited outside under the hot sun to sign-in. Some left their pet in the car with all the windows down. I just took the risk to leave my car on and left it running with AC while I waited in line. I parked in the lot, so I knew no one can drive my car away without me knowing. I wish VCA would put tents up so the pets can be in the shade too. read more

Let's be clear: as previously stated in earlier pet service-related reviews, I have strange and dichotomous feelings regarding pets in general. On the one hand, pets fulfill various psychological human needs, ranging from a primal need to maintain status as the dominant species in whatever ecosystem we find ourselves, to stimulating our collective subconscious feelings that cuddly fuzzy things with disproportionately large heads are cute and necessary for happiness. On the other side of the dingy penny that is my opinion regarding animals domesticated for non-consumption or utilitarian purposes, pets in general are little more than liability, expense, and eventual heartache. In a profitable industry that somehow manages to facilitate both of those warring camps simultaneously, the greater veterinary sciences, like the 12 years of Catholic school I attended, encourage both guilt and duty; they implore one to comport himself in a selfless life of service, and then pluck the last foldable money from your pocket with an eleemosynary vision usually reserved only for new age cults and late night animal related infomercials featuring the haunting vocals of Jewel and Sarah McLachlan, and Clumpy, the one-eyed Labrodoodle living in the alley from the first Spiderman movie. All that to say, this vet clinic, while not cheap, has done a good job of supporting our animals' health and happiness needs over the years. We have never been faced with the decision of whether or not to operate on a dog for colorectal polyps or explore the world of cosmetic feline laser eye surgery. Candidly, if you're spending that kind of dough on animals, you either have a lot more disposable income that me, or you've been lost to a culture of anthropomorphic dysentery, in which starving stranger children have a lower social rung than a known "animal person." Whatever, she's sweet, the kids like her, and I dare someone from Reseda to try to break into our Arcadia home while we're at work if Sadie's in the job. And she is always on the job. So in an effort to protect my investment of quadrupedal home security... And because she's such a widdul cutie pookie kookey pie!... We blew a few Franklins on a critter than said thank you by digging a hole in my rental lawn, then chewing a three year old plumeria tree into woodpulp. Under my bed. Love. Liability. Expense. Heartache. Take care of your pets, kids. And for the record, human kids are a lot more expensive, and you can't just leave them in the yard all day while you're at work. Expect a long wait EVERY time you come here. They don't have the courtesy to schedule appointments, and make the clients wait 45-1 hour. To make matters worse, the secretaries at the front always low-ball the wait-time. When you call, expect to be on hold for over 10 minutes. I'm not sure who trains the front desk, but they're short, irritable, and don't respect the patrons. The vets are wonderful (knowledgeable, friendly, and kind), but the business model is abysmal. Consider this review with a grain of salt, as I've only brought my pup here once for a complimentary vet visit (from the Pasadena Humane Society). I arrived around 9am in the morning on a Friday-- the waiting room was starting to fill up, but it wasn't until 9:30 that the place became an energetic packed house of anxious dogs and soothing owners. My total wait time was about 30 minutes. I saw Dr. Howes, who was awesome. She had a warm personality, very gentle with my new adopted pup, and patiently answered my questions. I'm not sure about the numerous complaints regarding the receptionists, but I received nothing but kind service upon checking in (bonus! dog treats available at the receptionist desk!). Because the Pasadena Humane Society covers costs & fees for any issues a newly adopted animal is experiencing (within a 7 day window), my dog's medication, antibiotics, injection for rehydration, and stool exam/sampling were on the house. It was her first week and clearly the nerves got the best of her. As all other reviewers pointed out, this is a walk-in only establishment. Nice, easy to find parking adjacent to the hospital. Unfortunately, any hospital (human or furry friend) is a business-- the trick is to find one that has the right kind of balance that YOU are comfortable with as a pet owner. Yes, vets are notorious for upcharging-- so do you research and don't be afraid to negotiate costs...because frankly, what do you have to lose. Get your initial Rx and when you need a refill, try ordering via a Big Box Retailer's pharmacy (rhymes with Bosco) or a Big Online Pet Retailer (rhymes with Dewy). ;) read more
