I have been going to this VCA for over 10 years with three animals, and their services have severely declined. I made the extremely difficult decision to euthanize my beloved dog, only to be told on the day of the appointment that they wouldn't proceed. She has been suffering for months and is not getting any better. Her tumor has doubled in size, causing her great difficulty in walking, sleeping, and going to the bathroom. Her tumor will not stop leaking and has began to linger with an odd and concerning odor. She also hasn't been her usual self for weeks, constantly tired and anxious. I know she won't be getting better, yet VCA decided to send her home to continue suffering. The "vet" conducted a 10-minute exam but didn't even bother to look at her growing tumor because the bandage I wrapped was still perfectly intact. Needless to say, I will be looking for a new vet that prioritizes the quality of care for its loyal clients over the money they profit by keeping animals alive unnecessarily. read more

What you got here is a CORPORATE pet hospital selling super expensive medications and misdiagnosing the simplest of health issues to keep you coming back for Dr. visits/Rx refills and overpriced pet services. It was only till I moved out of Pasadena that I realized by another vet hospital my dog had a text book food allergy. Over a three month period, a simple change of food and strict diet with realistically priced Rx took away my dogs skin problem and foul odor that Foothill claimed was caused by something else that required countless prescriptions of their meds and their staff stating "you need to bring in your dog for a re-evaluation"... I implore you to look elsewhere if you're on a tight budget but if money grows on trees for you, places like Banfield and Foothill Vet is perfect for you and your pet. read more

Where do I begin? I tried out this clinic because the other clinic down the road missed a cancer diagnosis for one of my cats, who passed away. I looked online and saw that they have a free first exam for new clients. So, I called and asked about when to come in. They told me they don't have set appointments. I figured I'd still try. So I took my cat in after work to have him checked out. When I had called the day before, I mentioned that my cat had a bald patch at the base of his tail due to fleas. As a result, they did not honor the free exam. They told me that my cat had a prior condition (fleas!) they also told me that I had visited the clinic before. My husband took our deceased kitten to the clinic after he kitten had been run over by a car. (That was not for a check up. And I am not my husband.) Anyway, during the exam, I mentioned to the vet that my cat had a lump in his primordial (belly) sack. The vet recommended that I allow him to do a procedure to extract fluid from that lump so that he could exam the contacts and better determine what it might be. So I agreed to pay a couple hundred bucks for that to be in the safe side. (I think it was about $175-200 ) As a result, the veterinarian told me that he wasn't sure what the sack was based on the contents he extracted. I was beginning to lose my confidence in him. The vet then recommended an x-ray so that he could have a better idea of what was going on in my cats abdomen. I agreed based on his recommendation. (When I was waiting to check-out, there was another veterinarian examining a dog's testicles in the waiting area. Gross! I was stunned. ) Eventually they called me up to check me out. I asked them if they would still honor the discounted rate for the initial examination.They told me that that was up to the veterinarian. So I told them they needed to check with him. Well, he did not bother to come out and talk to me, but rather had that same assistant tell me that the free exam couldn't be honored because of my cats "pre-existing condition" of FLEAS! As a result, I SPENT ABOUT $800 TO BE TOLD THAT MY CAT LIKELY HAS A SWOLLEN LYMP NODE AND FLEAS (which I knew!) The total included the examination, fluid extraction, x-ray, flea drops, and an antibiotic injection. So I let them know that I did not agree with their business practice and they informed me that they would pass my concern along to the office manager. The next day, I got a call from the office manager- she was nice and apologetic but did not resolve the issue. Instead, as a consolation, the office manager offered me a "free" follow -up appointment with another veterinarian. Mind you, I told her that I wanted to see a veterinarian with more experience, who would not require that I do additional procedures due to his or her lack of diagnostic skills. I asked if I could schedule an appointment with a more experienced veterinarian since they had inconvenienced me with an unnecessary procedure and cost. Again, the office manager told me that they don't schedule appointments, but that I could come in whenever I liked. So, I will never go to this place again. If they wanted to keep my business, they would've eaten the cost of the x-ray, which was definitely not necessary. As anyone who works in a particular profession, especially those of us who are licensed with state boards, it is our ethical duty to make sure that we provide the best care and use the best clinical judgment within our scope and skill set. If this veterinarian was unsure, ethically, he should've consulted with another vet before putting the burden on me financially due to his lack of confidence in his diagnostic skills. Not cool. Let's see what they reply. They love doing damage control at this place because of all the complaints. I think they need to be proactive, not reactive. GOOD RIDDANCE! read more

We love Dr Howes, Dr Andrew's, and Dr Kwan. BUT their walk-in sign-up system is extremely inefficient and time consuming. People stand in line 45 minutes to an hour just for the 7:30am sign-up sheet or stand in line for 45 minutes to an hour for the 12:30pm sign-up sheet. Go home/go do errands, wait for their call then go back 2-3 hours later to be seen. We have been taking all our pets and strays to see Dr. Howes, Dr. Andrew's, and Dr Kwan for 10+ years. Their poor and ridiculous walk-in system just gave me the incentive to find a new veterinary hospital. Love Dr. Howes, Dr. Andrews (she may be retired), and Dr. Kwan. But I guess this is goodbye. To Dr. Howes and Dr. Kwan, If you ever leave VCA and open your own veterinary hospital, we will be your the first client! read more

Dr Kwan and the VCA staff literally saved my dogs life about a month ago. My little mini schnauzer Luna was was struck by a moving car when I lost grip of her while walking her in the AM. This actually wasn't the nearest VCA to me but I thank god I came to this one. I rushed my dog here in panic. Their staff saw me in tears with my dog and rushed her to the back. On the one hand, you can walk in at any time, meaning that the health problem your pet is having *now*, which is usually all you care about, can be treated by them *now*, unlike some other vets in the area who inexplicably don't do walk-ins. On the other hand, we have a cat who had absolutely foul-smelling poop and was having diarrhea 100% of the time. The joke of the doctor we saw here said that he literally *could not diagnose* our cat and had no idea what was going on. We went to a non-VCA clinic (I forced a walk-in situation :) ) and he was diagnosed with IBD and given a treatment plan same-day. He's not great (has cancer now), but has been alive for 2 additional years at this point, largely due to that vet. I wouldn't bring cats with real issues here, because the odds are they won't be diagnosed and treated properly. That's... not good, because that's the reason for this clinic to exist. I guess I'd bring a cat here if it had a wound or something obvious. read more

My family and I have been customers of Foothill Veterinary Hospital for over 20 years, across 3 dogs. I will never use their services again and I cannot in good conscience recommend them to any other pet owner. I thought that this was an exceptional way to open a 1-star review, until I saw that I'm far from the first to do so. The only way I know how to write this review is by recounting my dog's death: Our dog, Mac, experienced his first partial seizure two weeks before his death, when he overexcited and overexerted himself when he saw his favorite person come home after a long day. It was extremely distressing. We were worried that he was exhibiting symptoms of congestive heart failure, including a wet cough, so I called to schedule an appointment with Foothill Veterinary the next day. Our best guess was that his organs weren't getting enough oxygen. I was told that, despite my dog's condition, they couldn't book me an appointment for more than a week. My parents called back, politely expressed their disappointment, and were similarly told that we'd need to wait a week or more - but that they'd inform us if there was an opening due to a cancellation. There was an opening, but it was still a week away. The day before our appointment, Mac had another partial seizure, and I took him to a local emergency room because he was so weak when he recovered. The veterinarian at the emergency room couldn't find anything wrong with him, and prescribed him antibiotics for his cough. It was at this time that I also began arranging end-of-life care - at-home euthanasia - for him; however, between being neglected by our veterinarian and being given a vague diagnosis by the emergency room veterinarian, we didn't know when to say goodbye. The emergency room expense was no issue and I don't fault them for their diagnosis, but it was extremely frustrating to watch my dog's health decline as we were forced to wait. It was doubly frustrating when I heard back from Foothill Veterinary - days later, after Mac's lab work had been analyzed - that Mac had lung cancer. (It wasn't clear whether the cancer had spread to his brain, or the seizures were due to a lack of oxygen.) I called Dr. Kwan at Foothill Veterinary, who prescribed him a cough suppressant and agreed with my guess that I'd have a week or two to arrange for a proper goodbye for Mac. My concern was making Mac as comfortable as possible. Instead, Mac died in my arms the next day after he didn't recover from his third partial seizure, which I tried desperately to deal with as soon as I saw he was having difficulty breathing. I'm thankful that I was there for him, but it was one of the most difficult experiences of my life as I realized that he simply couldn't recover, despite bouncing back for a moment. I would like to thank the receptionist from Gifts of Peace Home Pet Euthanasia, who stayed on the line with me, after closing, as I realized that Mac was leaving me. She is an absolute saint, and I'm going to give them a 5-star review as soon as I feel comfortable enough to write it. It took two weeks for me to sit down and write this review. Veterinary care isn't just about regular check-ups and preventative care; whether due to old age or other factors, every pet owner will have to watch their loved ones fall ill. It's matter of life and death - and sometimes life and death is a matter of days, not weeks. Do I blame Foothill Veterinary for my dog's death? Absolutely not, that would be absurd. But I do think that their neglect for customer of more than 20 years because they were "busy" and "understaffed" - while my dog was having regular seizures - led to his death being an unnecessarily traumatic experience? Yes. Do not become a regular customer of VCA Foothill Veterinary Hospital. Hell, if you don't, it might help free up their schedule for pets that need urgent care. read more

My five month old puppy was vomiting and having soft stool. I went to the vet first time. Dr. Dieback suggested some exams and medicines. With waved $56 visit fee, it end up costs me $284. I think that is a little bit pricy. She also suggested Royal Canin brand food which is a three star rating dog food. When i check out on Chewy.com, it requires me to provide the doctor name before i can check out. She gets a good kickback I guess. She is a good salesperson. Telling you the necessity of all kinds of services and medicines. I realize all I need is the ten dollar Maropitant medicine. I think the dog owners can deny most of what doctor suggests and do your research. I will try a different vet next time. Rabies vaccine is $29 at this place, my friend paid $12 at different vet. read more

My family and I have been loyal to Foothill Vet, many of our pets had always been under the care of Dr. Bell. Unfortunately now it seems we have to look elsewhere for my pets care since the miscommunication from foothill vet is beginning to be a habit. I fully understand that due to the pandemic things are a little different, and they used to have a nice system up until 3 weeks ago. The first time I went to take my dog for a wellness exam (which they sent me a flyer in the mail to remind me) they failed to mention when I called the day prior that unless I were to get my name on the list my dog would not be seen. I drove all the way from Montebello to Pasadena for nothing. Fine. Yes, I was upset but, I would try in the next few weeks. Today 2/20 I had my aunt go at 6:30 am to wait in line and get my name down. In addition I had called foothill during the week to see if they were still short staffed this weekend since they had mentioned they were going to be short staffed for 2 weeks. The girl who answered said they wouldn't be short staffed so there would be no problem. Come 7:00 am and my aunt waiting there since 6:30, we are told only 7 pets can be seen since they are short staffed. I have not been so upset in a long time but this is RIDICULOUS! There is a reason people call and ask for information so something like this does not happen. Again. A waste of time. A waste of gas. All for nothing. I guess what is there to expect when all of the best vets that used to work there are no longer there. My family and I will be taking our business elsewhere. After 30 years, it's a shame. read more

On the day before I was planning to fly with my dog, I found out that his rabies vaccination had expired two weeks prior. Oops. I frantically called around to vets in the area, hoping I could get in quickly but unfortunately, everyone was booked out! So I took my dog here early Tuesday morning at 8am- it wasn't early enough because I still waited an hour even though they open at 7:30am!!! We saw Dr. Smillie, who was wonderful! The exam and booster shot were quick and we were out in under an hour and a half. Free parking, free wifi in the waiting area, and free first exam! Everyone was also super nice and helpful. I would highly recommend bringing your baby here, as long as you don't mind waiting for a bit as they are walk-in only! read more

Highly recommend: Everyone here is so kind. The staff is very hard working and attentive to every family that comes in. They're is always someone at the desk if not more. When you walk in they see you and greet you AND importantly they do not forget you so if there is a lot of families checking in and you're waiting they will get to you. I took my snowball here and we saw Dr Fisher. She's amazing I highly recommend her she made us feel so comfortable and my boy had to get his anal glands checked and he's so sensitive and whines at the littlest things so when he was whining (he was in the other room To do this) we heard him and the Dr came in and let us know everything is okay and she reassured us. I have been client for 20 years, for past 2 years I can NEVER get appointment for time sensitive issues- ear infection/tummy troubles. Today (Monday) I called bc my dog has ear infection and was told tbe next available appointment was for NEXT MONDAY. i asked what i should do and the person told me about an emergency place. i called. they are closed today. i have put up with this for 2 years thinking it would get better, assuming they would surely recognize that they cant consistently turn away patients in need. my husband and i look at each other with dread every time something is wrong with one of our dogs knowing that we will call and get a version of "we cant see you". it was loyalty and a belief it would change that has kept me but today i finally am going to find a new vet. read more

Took my newly rescued dog here for a health checkup. Met with Dr. Bell who was incredibly nice. He liked what I was cooking for my fur ball and recommended some vitamins that I can add to the food. He spend time looking at my dog and told us what to expect with this breed and how to avoid fleas and ticks when we take him for hikes. Remember that they don't take appointments, so just walk in and you can see the Vet depending on how many people are in front of you. We went on a Monday and the waiting room was crowded. Had to wait for 20 minutes before we could see Dr. Bell, which wasn't bad at all. A general health checkup costs $55 and the front office staff was pretty friendly. Overall, a really pleasant experience....so happy to know that my little fur ball is healthy and happy! read more

All the vets I visited are very experienced. Today Dr Andrews saw my cat. She was so sweet and gentle, very patient, knowledgeable, and very honest. I will definitely go with her again next time. We love the VCA Foothill Vet! They are more than accommodating and have been wonderful during COVID times. In pandemic and regular times, they are not an appointment-based practice, so you are seen on a walk-in basis, which causes a little bit of a wait but it's so worth it! They have a picnic bench outside you can wait at too. We have had three dogs seen by this hospital and we have no complaints! We love Dr. Smillie and Dr. Wong! I've been taking my toy poodle here ever since I've moved to Pasadena 7 years ago. They are very professional, friendly and most importantly- honest! I have recently had to take her in more frequently since she's a senior now and they're so caring and gentle with her. I've trusted what every doctor has to suggest and they always work with me and my budget. I just visited a nearby er animal hospital yesterday and they were insisting I do an emergency surgery on my pet because that will ensure that they see everything is okay with her internally. I thought that was a bit extreme and trusted my gut feeling to wait and visit here in the AM when they reopened and sure enough Dr. Kwan said it was obvious from the x-Rays and ultra sound that Pyometra wasn't the issue and surgery was not the route to take. Our poor dog was having an extreme skin reaction that was causing flaking and a terrible body odor. Dr. Fisher was so caring and knowledgeable on the cause and treatment required to get it under control. She was very good about managing our expectations and laying out multiple options for treatment. It's very important to us that doctor is attentive and shows concern, and we felt very well taken care of with Dr. Fisher. Terrible experience with this place ..not only did we have to get there at 5:45am to get a spot so someone could see our dog..(took two mornings to get a spot) she was taken in for a checkup and ended having to spend the whole day there ..12 hours ..absolutely no communication..they didn't even feed the poor dog!!!! I understand there is pandemic going on and they're short staffed , but maybe just try a little harder to communicate with people waiting outside in the cold of the morning. When you say "we're ready to see your pet" you could mention it'll be at least 3 hours ..when we called we were told "she's not been seen yet" lol unreal. Life is hard enough at the moment ..this visit made it a little harder. More communication pls ..especially at the prices you're charging. read more

This used to be a very good vet. We have taken our pets there for over 25 years. Lately the care has gone way down, the expenses have gone way up, and the inconveniences have exponentially risen. Our last visit ended up being four hours long waiting in the parking lot. While we knew what was wrong with the dog, they insisted on running a lot of tests which came to almost $800. What was wrong with the dog was exactly what we said. We would never ever recommend this vet to anyone again. And we are seeking a new vet as we write this review. read more

Normally post positive feed backup on Yelp, but today's experience at VCA Foothill Veterinarian was not a great experience. Went to take my cat Casey in for a shave. Casey is a indoor 11 year old Maine Coon. We normally get him groomed every few months at this Vet. Today, there was new young Vet that we meet, and she would not shave our cat without giving him a rabies shot. We explained to the vet that some of our animals have died from the rabies shoot. The Vet showed no remorse. She told us, "if the animal bites us, we will euthanize your animal, and sent for an autopsy. I'm all for protecting staff, but her manner and level of professionalism was unacceptable. Have lived on a farm most of life and would not recommend any Vet that does not have compassion for the animal's our the customers they service. read more

today I called to ask for them to please answer a fax from Costco to refill my dog's arthritis meds. whoever answer the phone informed me that they had several hundred faxes because today is the first day after a long weekend. It may take them up to 72 hours to get to mine. I told her he was going to be out of medication and that didnt seem to make any difference. I was made to feel that I didnt MATTER at all!!.. I like Dr Kwan very much but I feel that it may be time to change from Foothill since they seem to be too busy to care about their patients. read more
