The lovely young woman who worked there told me that they opened within the year, and there were two other Design Zola stores (one in Brossard and one on the plateau). Looking at the stores online, this site is rather small compared to the other locations, but man, it's in prime Vieux Montreal location, right on St. Paul across from the Bonsecours Market. I really like the business philosophy and corporate values of this company (i.e., supporting fair trade, and eco-friendly product lines). Personally, I'm not so into the boho/Indian/hippie aesthetic so much (think ceramic Buddha sculptures, brass Indian candelabras, rustic wooden frames surrounding mirrors, hanging star lanterns, lots of brass things, hand-painted ceramic knobs and hooks, batik-covered poof ottomans, elephant sculptures....you get the idea. They also carried lots of home textiles and some rustic wood furniture pieces. It all reminded me of a cross between Anthropologie and Restoration Hardware. But I appreciated the high quality of the goods, and my daughter really liked it all. Prices are high, but quality is good. It appeared like the items here are well-made and would last a long time. They also have some smaller, incidental-type items, like incense and incense accessories and hand-forged metal wall hooks. They also had a few decorative cushions around $40. So there are a few items here that aren't super pricey, and one could probably find some reasonably priced gifts here for folks who are into this Indian-boho look.

Although it has up-scaled a great deal, going from an average neighborhood hardware, to upscale specialty paint/hardware/housewares and gifts it still has the same neighborhood feel and even some of the same staff. Wilder, who works behind the paint counter in the basement, where most of the "serious" hardware is located, has been there ever since I can remember, and always provides one of the best customer service experiences available. He knows his stuff, and is always happy to help. Upstairs, where the gifts and housewares are found, is home to what I can only describe as *the* best selection of gifts for hard to shop for hipsters and grandparents ever... It has to be seen to be believed. If your looking for some unique gifts, specialty hardware, or are just tired of the so-so service at other big box hardwares, try Hogg out...

Anyway it seems Montreal doesn't have a lot of places that sells that but saw online that Hogg hardware does since it's part of the Home Hardware group. Went in, ordered it, got a call 2 days later to pick and it wasn't expensive at all. The guys are also really nice but while I was waiting around I saw a ton of cool stuff for the home including soy candles, funky door handles and coat hooks, and stuff you'll never see at Home Depot. I used to buy soy candles at Winners (since soy doesn't produce soot and burns cleanly), but increasingly they don't carry them anymore and instead have "hand-poured" candles ( what the hell is that supposed to mean if it doesn't change the fact that it produces soot?) but now at least I can get some here at a reasonable price. There's a reason why it's located in Westmount and also Nun's Island, it's definitely more bourgeoisie and less blue-collar.

Just the design and layout is the finest I have ever seen of a retail establishment selling whimsical, retro, antiqued item. You will find something here for every budget. This store is an absolute time capsule of industrial furniture…read more Everything from ceiling lights, stools, and drafting tables... to more bizarre and unique items. All of it is very authentic and industrial, a lot of the pieces are very unique. The only downside is the prices, which can be high. If you are not on a tight budget, you will probably not find more amazing and unique industrial furniture elsewhere in Montreal. I think I spent over 5 minutes actively oogling a drafting table.

I loved the multiple green spaces around the café area where you could relax with a drink and a book under some greenery. I figured in the end, it is not mine to keep and I would be doing the business owners a disservice by not helping them attract more clients to them. This place should be shared with anyone willing to explore the hidden treasures of the City. Most tourists would not come into a home furnishings place, but trust me. You want to at least grab a coffee and follow me. My absolute favorite part is their little shaded "terrasse" ally. If you ever need a little hideaway when you are in Old Port. It's the perfect place. I feel like I've been transported to a different time and place. Nothing fancy, just tranquil, a simple elegance that the French are synonymous with. What you may find... * Non-digital media-related stuff like 8mm movie editor and splicers, a Polaroid camera kit, 45 rpm vinyl singles, or real vintage typewriters for banging out your novel without spellcheck; * Classic casserole dishes without exposure to microplastics or non-stick PFAS; * Dial and pushbutton phones for adding back your landline; * Percolators for your morning coffee; * Children's banks for teaching them how to save money; and * Other useful and now obsolete ephemera. Tucked in there were other things that may make you smile (or not if you think about it) such as a nun doll with torn skirt, possibly the source of someone's nightmare. Fun?! Additionally, having the two sections probably makes gift shopping (for your fave Kitsch lover) a dream. When I visited this weekend there was a big labour day sale- I spotted beautiful vintage Pyrex bowls for prices like $25. Obviously you could probably snag these kinds of things for cheaper if you combed through a Village des Valeurs, by why bother if these guys are going to dig up the good stuff?
