Hands down the best quality gluten-free pasta I've found. They both a GF pasta and a short pasta. I've tried the squid ink and carbonara (which reminds me of Italian grandmas recipe) - both were delicious. I plan to work my way through the whole pasta menu. My friend liked the gluten-free pizza with vegan cheese so much she has gotten it both times we went! The chocolate cake is also gluten free! Service is great and they have suggested wine pairings. On a Wednesday they had half off bottles which made the bill super reasonable. Cute cozy vibe too. read more

I feel like Vega is such a hidden gem in the city! We love ordering the gnocchi and trying something new each time + the service is a 10/10.

I'm giving them 2 stars since take-out of Italian suffers more than eating in the restaurant and the service was lovely. We went to Vega because a friend had been years ago and raved it was some of the best Italian they had and was worth a visit. We gave it a shot! We ordered the Caesar salad, shrimp pasta, rigatoni with meatballs, and margarita pizza. All the portions except the pizza were very small an underwhelming. The pizza tasted like wet flour and tomato ketchup sauce with a scant amount of cheese and uneven hand of basil. There was very little sauce on either pasta dish and it was bland and gummy. The angel hair pasta in the shrimp dish was the best part of the meal. The salad lacked sufficient dressing and had very little cheese and no croutons. We received a side of what looked like bread or a version of focaccia that was undercooked on the inside and hard as rocks everywhere else. We did call in our order and the staff were helpful and also very welcoming when we arrived. So the staff gets 5 stars!! I have read the food is inconsistent, and for my money and time I'd gamble elsewhere to find something reliable and amazing. read more

Great food and service! We've been going there for years now and doesn't disappoint and it is good for kids although the space is tight.

Food was under-whelming. Gnocchi with butter and sage was disappointing. Two minuscule, withered sage leaves did not impart any flavor whatsoever. The butter also lacked flavor and richness. The gnocchi itself seemed to need another minute or two in the pot. To top it off there was no hint of seasoning. I generally eat what is prepared from the kitchen without any additional salt and/or pepper. In this case they were definitely called for. I asked our server. However she must have forgotten as she never came back with them. The "special" squash blossoms were encased in some odd doughy like substance and baked? They too were very bland. I'm sad that I have to leave such horrible feedback. One of the people in our party suggested that perhaps we all just ordered the wrong things. I don't think we will ever find out since I would be hard pressed to give them another try. read more

Are used to love coming to this place. The food used to be fabulous, the service attentive and the ambience was a little bit loud but cozy. My husband and I went tonight and unfortunately we were seated outside which was very cold and windy. They did have heaters which helped but not totally. We were sitting next to a large group with kids that were extremely loud that we couldn't hear each other talk. When we got our food, it took all of two minutes to turn cold. It used to be that no matter what you got it was fantastic which I'm very sorry to say, it was not tonight. The best thing that we had was the dessert which most likely is a store-bought item I had the gnocchi which was overdone and soggy, and there is not much flavor to the carbonara. This was my first time at Vega. My friend and I had never really explored Bernal and we were immediately enticed by Vega's nice outdoor seating and overall nice atmosphere. We were immediately seated, even though it was a busy Friday night. Service was super friendly and fast, absolutely no complaints! I really wish I could rate this restaurant higher, but the food just was not great. Every dish was somehow missing something. While it wasn't necessarily bad food, it was disappointing given the high price point. If you're looking for bomb Italien food, this would probably not be my first pick. read more

I ordered the caprese salad, which consisted of halved cherry tomatoes (CHERRY TOMATOES???), a few chunks of mozz, sparse basil and EVOO. The house salad with salmon cost a whopping $28 for some fresh, barely dressed greens, a tablespoon of grated cheese, a couple of walnuts and grapefruit slices, and a very thin, undercooked, fatty tail-end piece of salmon. This place was on Check Please Bay Area a bunch of years ago and everyone raved about the gnocchi with sausage and mushrooms. It was Christmas week and my fav Italian plane (Pink Onion) was closed so thought I would knock out one of my Yelp bookmarks. NOTE: My experience was definitely tainted by the obnoxious table next to us playing "Simon Says" at the top of their lungs with their 2 rowdy kids who could not sit still. Even the patient grandma with them was annoyed when she piped in with "simon says don't talk for 5 minutes" - Unfortunately, It didn't work. We were seated directly outside the bathroom where there is a curtain to the door to the bathroom - so also not ideal seating despite having made reservations, and arriving exactly on time for them. In the plus column - they offer (Large) glasses of cabernet for $6 - we had 2. The fresh bread and olive oil is delicious. go ahead and ruin your appetite! We ordered the Ceasar salad to split - nothing objectionable, but could have been more Ceasar-y. We also ordered the Pizza margarita (wish I had specified "well done") and the gnocchi everyone raved about with the mushrooms and sausage. It was all fine - but nothing I would crave or come back for. Service was good. They only charged us for 1 glass of wine - when we pointed it out, they fixed it but did not thank us for our honesty. Weeknight dinner, no waiting for a table. Ordered a bottle of red (2021 Masseria Li Veli Pezzo Morgana riserva) to split as we looked over the menu. This wine was excellent; dark, full-bodied and fruity. The lighting in the dining room was very dim. At one point, I pulled out my phone and opened the flashlight app in order for us to read the menu. When ordering appetizers, we asked if they had the stuffed zucchini blossoms (not on the menu). One of our party (a regular), said they sometimes have them if you ask, but sadly not this evening. We had the burrata and the artichoke appetizers. The burrata was ok, the artichokes were flavorful. We had the carbonara, the bosciaoli and the pappardelle for mains, with a side of asparagus (5 pieces for 3 people). The person having the carbonara said it was good. Two of us split the bosciaoli and the pappardelle. We asked if the kitchen could split them for us, but were told no so, we did it ourselves when the dishes arrived. I had been particularly looking forward to the bosciaoli with house-made gnocchi, having read praise on Yelp reviews. Unfortunately, I cannot add to that praise. The gnocchi I had were the opposite of heavenly fluffy pillows of goodness; they were heavy, chewy pieces of dough. The mushrooms and sausage in the sauce were fine. After eating a few gnocchi I gave up and tried the pappardelle. Here, the noodle was fine, though the boar sauce let it down. not tasting rich as expected, but rather one-note (like ground meat). We all had leftovers boxed and ordered the daily special cheesecake mentioned by our server, and the tiramisu. Both desserts were good, the cheesecake being the star; silkily creamy and delightful. The menu said there was marsala in the tiramisu, I could not detect any, but it was very delicious. I came here when I was stuck in SF due to bad traffic on the Bay Bridge. I really enjoyed my meal. The staff was lovely and the food was good. I had the mushroom cannelloni which was very good. My only quibble, and its really a quibble, is that I would have preferred more bechamel tomato sauce on the plate. Flavors were very good. I had the panna cotta for dessert because they were out of my first choice. The panna cotta was very good, creamy, light and flavorful. I also enjoyed a nice glass of Montepulciano to accompany my meal. All in all a great experience. Will definitely go back! read more

Last night I revisited Vega. I had the Capellini with crab . Excellent and very tasty. A repeat in the future . My friend had the rigatoni. His standard order there. Always repeat for him. My only suggestion for improvement was a little more light in the main dining room so we can really appreciate the beauty of our food. Really enjoyed the food. We went as a family of 5 and had a reservation at 5:30 pm. Early I know, but we have kids and sports and all that! Ha! We had the sea bass special with risotto and English peas, the fungi lasagna special, the fungi pizza, carbonara and ravioli special. All were excellent dishes. They also have a very decent house red wine that is cheap and delicious. Comes in handy for a big family. The resto is a bit dark inside, but halfway through the meal they did bring candles. Lots of wait staff which were very attentive. The only reason this isn't 5s across the board is the constant pressure to finish your course, move to the next and get out. The manager was literally hovering over the table and asking us to speed up. After dinner, we asked for desert. They gave us menus but had absolutely no time to read it. The manager came over and immediately asked what we wanted. Rushed, we ordered the chocolate cake (for the person who had left for the restroom but we felt so pressured we figured we'd make a call), cannoli and the lemon sorbet. I'd describe the desert as mid, and definitely rushed. Similar to the other courses. We paid, left a great tip and left. Overall really good food and decent service. However turning over a table of 5 in less than an hour when they ordered 3 full courses and drank wine + non-alcoholic beverages was definitely a downside. read more

The perfect place to treat myself after a mid-evening rendezvous with a handsome fella nearby. United Dumpling down the street was closed early, so I literally happened upon Vega while strolling down Cortland. Prompt service and lots of fancy menu items with hand-made pastas and baked options. This restaurant screams that sort of vibe that says, "And then he took me to this little Italian place that had an amazing bottle of '88 merlot, from Tuscany!" Baked risotto was really hot when it came, in the best way. Iced tea brewed fresh there and tasted it. After-dinner mocha was divine. The only thing I wanted was a little lemon wedge squeezed on my Caesar salad, although I'm sure they would have brought one had I asked. I loved the salad though because so often, salad ingredients show up dry, unmixed, or on a tiny plate. This was all perfect. We used to come here a lot, even before the current owners bought it from Valentina and did not notably change things. We stopped after we got a little tired of it, and then it seemed a little cramped for COVID. My wife thought the Caesar had gotten blander and didn't appreciate the waiter saying it was authentic that way. But I took a friend there over the weekend, had the bosciaola, and it was fantastic! We had a nice spot in the parklet next to a heat lamp. The only shame is that their spaghetti no longer comes with crab. That was special. And the gnocchi always was. read more

Great ambiance (dim lighting, tight seating), & a great date spot! The sauces for each dish were so flavorful and well balanced. The red sauces were not too acidic and the béchamel was not too rich. The portions might look small, but the pasta is very filling. I shared the items pictured with my date & it was plenty for the both of us. This is definitely a neighborhood gem, and worth the visit even if you don't live in Bernal. Great wine selection, but the food is always the star here. Their pizza are one of my favorite in the city- dough is light and barely enough to hold all the content on top. The toppings are simple but well balanced. Homemade pasta is always delicious. I love linguini Nero whenever restaurants offer it, and Vega's hits the spot. I often get their fish of the day dish, which is always cooked to perfection. Juicy on the inside, slightly charred on top to give that rich glaze. Don't forget to save room for their tiramisu. read more

Really loved this place. The service was spot on, and the food was to die for. Parking is a bit tough, but if you drive around and hunt people down that are leaving you'll find some. Try some of the neighborhoods as well. They have a few outside patio seating with strong heat lamps - that is the way to go when its chilly! You get the nice outdoors, but stay extra warm. The heart shaped complimentary bread was so cute! The olive oil was so flavorful just on its own, I did not need the vinaigrette. We ordered the polenta, which came fried and in a red sauce and 4 meatballs. The meatballs were delicious, the red sauce was tangy and perfect - however the polenta missed the mark for me. It lacked flavor and the cheese on top was too thick for my liking. I ordered their famous potato gnocchi alla boscaiola. Alla Boscaiola is classic Italian dish which translates to "Woodman's pasta" which usually comes with mushroom, pancetta, and cream sauce. This version included soft home made heavely pillowy potato gnocchi, cream sauce, roasted mushrooms and bits of fennel sausage - with white truffle oil. This was to die for, one of the best gnocchi dishes I had! The truffle was not overpowering either - complimented the dish perfectly. Service was fantastic. I wanted to give props to the owner, server and busser that night of 1/12/18. The busser especially went above and beyond to make sure we were attended to and asked if we needed anything. The only service downfall to mention was that my pasta dish came first before my friend's. We ended up waiting an additional 15 minutes before hers came out. Apparently there was a mix up that we were sharing everything, but that certainly was not vocalized or the case. I wanted my own gnocchi! :) Definitely recommend! read more

Maybe my favorite pizza spot in SF. The pizzas are more Italian style than American - thinner crust and pizzas aren't that "deep", so they are less filling than what you may be used to from fast food chains. But the price point is reasonable (~$16) for a pizza and the taste makes it more than worth it. I've been here a couple times now and tried the vegetarian pizza, pizza al funghi (mushroom pizza), pizza bianca e nutella (dessert pizza) and really enjoyed all of them. So far I've only done takeout but they do have a very nice patio seating area right outside the restaurant. The area (bernal heights) is a nice place to walk around before/after a bite as well. read more

We have been trying to be supportive of local businesses during the pandemic, and we've tried to be super understanding when things don't go quite right. We love italian food and really wanted to love Vega...But our experience here was extremely rude. We ordered takeout online and it said it'll be ready in 25-30 min so we get there 35 min or so later. I went up to the pick up window and a staff member told me we are just waiting for the pizza and it'll be a couple of minutes. She gestured me to sit on the bench among other diners; I figured for 2 min that's not a big deal. I waited and waited - I arrived at 6:20....ten minutes later I was reassured by another person that it'll only be a couple of minutes. They were polite but obviously that's not true. Ten minutes later someone came by again and said the pizza is just cooling so it'll just be two minutes. And then at 6:50 I was told again it'll only be 2 min. That's when I've had enough and told her that I'd appreciate it if she would've just told me from the beginning that it would be a while instead of keep lying that it's 2 minutes away! I would've sat in the safety of my car instead! But instead I feel like they just kept lying and the whole experience did not make me feel safe at all. The food was good - we were just grabbing a quick bite so we got a pizza (four cheese with pear and added salami) and the crab meat angel hair. Both were definitely worthwhile and prices were reasonable. Honestly it looks like such a cute restaurant with delicious food but unfortunately with such a poor experience I really can't say we will come back. All they needed to do was be honest and upfront about the wait time. I can understand delays with cooking but I am not ok with being misled or lied to - I would've gladly waited in my car and not complain if they just told me the truth to begin with. read more

All you could ask for in a neighborhood restaurant except, sadly, it's not in MY neighborhood. Visiting our friends in Bernal last weekend we dropped in for a no rezzie dinner at around 7 on Sunday evening. It was very busy, but we were seated ("in or out?") immediately. The service was super friendly and professional. No beats were missed in the delivery of drinks, apps and mains. We had the stuffed artichokes, the Romana salad, gnocchi (Fontina + Gorgonzola) , angel hair with crab, orichiettte and a sausage/broccoli rabe pizza. Everything was excellent and they were happy to mix up a special vegetarian version of one of the dishes. We had a fun Lambrusco to start and a terrific Pinot from Sonoma to finish. All restaurants need to be just like this; unassuming, savvy, delicious, efficient and friendly. read more

Revisited Vega after a couple years hiatus. The marg pizza isn't as good as I remembered--not the thin crispy artisanal crust I recall. Mediocre at best. We also got the mushroom pizza gluten free version that was a bit chewy but I get that's what you get with GF. My main issue was with portions. I ordered for 3 adults. The meatballs are quite petit (maybe smaller than a ping pong ball) and a side order only came with 4. They were tasty but so few! The Paparedelle was flavorful & perfectly cooked, the side of spinach was good but again, the portion was tiny. The to-go tins are small (6"x8") & only 1/3 was filled (height-wise) and less than 1/2 the tin length-wise with the spinach. I know these are side dishes but 4 meatballs & a small clump of spinach? It was disappointing. The Cesar dressing left me Puzzled because it tasted like there was no anchovie flavor at all. I used to have this as a go to neighborhood spot for Italian food. Lupa Tratoria on 24th is a better bet. IMHO. I gave three stars because flavor was good on 3 of the 6 items we got. read more

We had a nice family dinner here, and while my gnocchi was stupendous, my partner's pappardelle was extremely undercooked. Half our group was about 40 minutes late for our reservation, and that was no issue for them! THE COST: $190.75 before tips for dinner for five. Not bad! THE FOOD: INSALATE * Insalata Della Casa ($10) - 3.5 stars Tried a bite, this was fine, nothing super exciting but works if you need a salad.
