What a lovely gem in the Austin neighborhood! I found this place in a Vegan group on FB. It's within walking distance of my home; so I decided to check it out for lunch. It's a quaint establishment located on North Ave a few blocks east of Central Ave. I was greeted by the owners when I walked in. I love the picture mural of them on the east wall of the restaurant. I hate I didn't get a chance to snag a picture. I overlooked the menu and decided to try the "chicken" snaps and sweet potato fries. They cook everything to order so I had a bit of a wait, but it was well worth it. The oyster mushrooms were cooked to perfection. They were extremely crispy & flavorful. The fries were cut steakhouse style and tasted great! I've been back since my first initial visit so it's safe to say that I truly truly enjoyed their food & I'm not a vegan!! This place is a gem if you're looking for vegan soul food! I had the Soul Plate; 1 protein, 2 sides, and choice of soup or salad. For my protein, ribs, for my sides, mac'n cheese and kale greens. Everything was soooo flavorful and well-seasoned. My mother enjoyed her taco plate; they have many options for tacos. Beware: the jerk jack is spicy spicy. I like spice and this was a lot for me, heat wise lol. I believe this place opened a few months ago. I hope they transition away from the plastic utensils and styrofoam containers to more eco-friendly items. read more

First time customer! My sister order two weeks ago and really enjoyed it so I had to try! Love the restaurant decor...small yet folks can still eat in. I'm allergic to shrimps so I was excited that I seen it on the menu just to say "hey I'm eating shrimps" They look so real inside I was scared to eat it. Wasn't bad the batter was really flavorful. With the platter I had Mac n cheese and yams. It was different but not bad. I will order the yams again. My favorite however were the cauliflower wings....sooooo gooood! I will for sure be walking there just to get those! Menu has a lot of items to choose from so if you're not satisfied or wowed with one item always go back to try others. We're vegans visiting from California. We were looking for a Soulfood vegan spot and came across this location. First the address is incorrect on Google and also on Yelp however, we called and they gave us the correct address. When we arrive, we were immediately welcomed, and everyone was friendly. We tried the soul food plates. We had the fried fish, the barbecue ribs, the yams, the macaroni and cheese, the greens and the spaghetti. My favorites were the yams, green's and the fried fish. Make sure to ask for the tartar sauce if you get the fish. read more

really 3.5 stars... i wish i read reviews to help me decide on my order (looks like i should've tried the ribs!). tired of mexican and asian food (the "safest" for vegan takeout, imo) i was so very excited to try soul food. i love oyster mushrooms so though i'd love the mushroom "salmon" burger. unfortunately the consistency turned me off right away. i went through uber eats - so maybe delivery is not the way to go with this sandwich in particular. oddly enough it's not even on the website menu so maybe it's not a favorite overall. the mushy mess was hard to eat. i appreciated the eggplant fries accompaniment bc the last thing i wanted was another fried potato, lol. i needed greens/veggies so i also ordered a side of kale and was also disappointed. the brown color (again-- maybe should not have ordered this as a delivery) matched the taste - it actually lacked any taste. i am not giving up on this place -- i'm not against mock meats but wanted to go all veg-based today but seems like this is where VWC shines so --next time! read more

It's definitely worth trying! We don't have many vegan spots on the west side of the city so it is a major plus to have them. The ribs were amazing! I had to look on their website SEVERAL times to confirm they were vegan ribs. Yams were very good too. I think they need to work a little more on the Mac and cheese (it was flavorless) and the fish but I'm excited to see where this business is going. read more

Our first reviewer has her wish; takeout now comes in thin cardboard clamshells instead of styrofoam. My beans had it a little soggy by the time I got home. We got the soul plate (chicken fried "steak"), beans/rice, vegetables; also the jerk tacos and "shrimp" tacos, plus egg rolls, lentil soup and curry potatoes. We also got a peach strawberry smoothie, blueberry lemonade, some homemade snack mix and a rice krispie bar. Several things were a little dry; if I'd been dining in, I'd have realized what the egg roll sauce was, and might have gotten some other sauce suggestions. I'm not a huge fake meat fan, though the spouse is; he loved the chicken fried steak, though it was crying out for gravy (comes with hot sauce). The beans and rice were fine, a little mushy; the vegetables were underseasoned but not overcooked. I'd suggest getting something else as your side. The lentil soup was fine but nothing special; the curry potatoes fairly mild and dry. As I was at home, I added some seasoning. The egg rolls were greasy but fine and were better with a sauce. We were divided on the tacos; the jerk was surprisingly mild but the spouse didn't care for it; I was a little freaked out by the "shrimp" (if you like vegetarian seafood analogues I'm sure it's fine). Again, very mild (comes with salsa). I don't know whose vegetarian cheese they used, but it's very convincing! We were a bit confused by the snack mix; it was sweet and savory, like a slightly sweet Chex mix. The rice krispie bar was good, but had a lot of extra seeds/dried fruit in it; we knew what we were getting but I prefer the classics. Do get a beverage; the blueberry lemonade is outstanding (and comes in a jar with a lid for easy transport). My strawberry peach smoothie gave me mostly hits of banana and strawberry , though the spouse assures me he tasted peach. In any case, it was good. Friendly service, stool and small table seating. Overall, YES on the beverages, maybe on the rice krispie bar, and yes on the soul food if we make gravy at home. Maybe some additional seasoning, notably on the sides. It's not like there are a ton of vegan soul food places! Here's wishing them great success. read more

Super excited for a vegan spot on the west side. Hoping this review will inspire and make this spot even better. It's brimming with potential. We ordered: Pobowa and fries with side of mac and a Wish it was fish and an order of cauliwings. Both the Pobowa and Wish it was fish had a great crisp on the items. It could use a really great sauce to add some kick to the sandwich, maybe some kind of aioli. Fries needed salt or a special seasoning to give them a little something. The mac and cheese was heavy on the mustard flavor or at least that what I think it was. Maybe switch this one up. Cauliwings were tasty. Strict vegan here. I've been to every. Single. Vegan restaurant in Chicago. This is one of the best (top 3 with Spirit elephant, Herbivore) and the best soul food place I've tried by far. Their amazing home cooked style sloppy joe and hand battered, fresh, eggplant fries were one of my top 3 favorite vegan dishes in Chicago! The owners are such kind people, very friendly cute spot. Their Banana pudding might be the best dessert I've ever had - vegan or otherwise, rivaling pie pie my darling and beacon donuts. Seriously, you HAVE to try them out! read more

I have Always had good food from here , I ordered through Uber Eats and the Oysters Mushrooms are THE BEST ANYWHERE. The food is plentiful,I shared a rib plate with the Oyster Mushrooms with my daughter and we had more than enough... Also the Salad is good! Unfortunately you can't order the side salad on Uber eats unless you're ordering it with the soul plate. I love that side salad, whatever that dressing is really sets it off. I am going to come back and write a more detailed review but, need to hurry up and order again before they close on Uber eats, lol you should definitely give this place your money. read more

My Sister had ordered Two meals and two drinks that cost almost $50.00. And it wasn't what they expected expired cheese in the macaroni. Country fried steak was bland no seasoning and didn't look edible. The restaurant was informed to Through out the bad food but they still decided to sell it to customers. The first night, I got the soul plate: vegan ribs (have to say that cause, the taste of them may have you thinking otherwise), Mac and cheese & greens. An unusual spot to expect a reasonably sized vegan menu. The owners were friendly and knowledgeable when I asked about the various meat alternatives they offer.
