Unfortunately I lie on the Topsy's side of the argument. My experiences with visiting VC are hit and miss. Today's visit did nothing to wow me. The staff completely ignored me until checkout, candies not made in house are package as they are and no fresh popcorn. Shouldn't it be mandatory to always have the aroma of hot fresh popcorn enveloping a customer as soon as they hit the door? My package of peanut butter coated popcorn crunch will be a nice treat for the week, but nothing I've ever had has given me reason to go out of my way to return. Popcorn by the bag, or by the tin. Regular, butter flavor, cheese flavor, caramel & cinnamon. Some chocolate flavors, too. There is a small table for samples as you enter. There's where it broke down for me. When sampling, both another guest nor I could tell the difference in the regular "butter" flavor and the "cheese" flavor. That shouldn't happen. More to the point, it's a popcorn shop, but nothing was popping. No wonderful "movie theater" popcorn smell in the air. As most of their products are pre-packaged, they should at least give the illusion of freshly popped corn. Velvet Creme May have a good product, but they don't do it any favors by their display. read more

Topsy's just suffered a 20 second first round K.O. at the hands of Velvet Creme, A la Mike Tyson (Circa 1988!!) And even if you aren't a person that is a popcorn craver (I usually do not crave the stuff) this place has a place for all. Crazy part is it's a locally owned business that's been around for 70+ years. Let's start with the prices. ROCK BOTTOM CHEAP. I mean $3.50 for a 1LB bag of BUTTER TOFFEE PEANUTS??????? And the list of goodies goes on, at the comparable price of $3.50 you can find pound bags of Dark & white chocolate pretzels, gummy bears, and an endless myriad of fresh-made on-site candies, nuts, mixed nuts, and other novelties. And we have YET to even get to the popcorn. . . . just take a look at the pictures. Habañero, sour Cream, Cheese, Caramel, Chili Cheese (No, REALLY) again, the list just keeps going and going. We received a gift tin of popcorn for Christmas with caramel, cheddar, and cinnamon. The popcorn was stale when we opened it upon the arrival. When we talked to the person representing Velvet Creme, she was totally lacking in professionalism and rude, to put it bluntly. When we told her that our popcorn had arrived stale, she said it was made daily and couldn't understand how it could be stale. She also asked us to describe "stale". Really? A few days later our family member contacted us to ask us if our popcorn was stale. As we reluctantly told her yes, she was going to make a call to Velvet Creme as well about the product. After talking with her myself, and my husband too, the representative from Velvet Creme did agree to send us new bags of popcorn. They were better, but not great. I love Velvet Creme's butter popcorn. Their other products are good, but the butter popcorn is my favorite. Often, the carmel popcorn tastes scorched to me. The cinnamon is okay, but just average. I also like to try some of the other treats they have at VC... mixed nuts, salt water taffy, etc. If I'm looking for a gift for someone I don't know very well or someone who has everything (so it's easier to buy them food) I stop by their gift shop. I have to be the nay-sayer here. My mom is visiting from out of town and we were talking about old times and eating popcorn balls. So of course I Yelped it! I have tried Topsy's and really enjoyed it. But when I saw that all 9 reviews were 5's for Velvet Cream, I was hopeful that they would "wow" my mom... If you like soft...not quite mushy popcorn, this is the place for you. When I tried a couple of samples in the store, I thought maybe it was just because it had been out all day. I asked the lady which way was better to buy; the stuff that was bagged or the stuff they scoop into bags for you. She assured me that it was all "bagged fresh constantly." So I bought a gallon of the cheese, caramel, & cinnamon mix. First I tried microwaving a popcorn ball (regular flavor) for 15 seconds as recommended. I'm not sure how to explain it...but it was just mushy...not firm at all. I must say my mom enjoyed the flavor of it. I then decided to dig into the bag. Grrr...SOFT POPCORN!? I must say all flavors were extremely "light". I wouldn't say no flavor...but not good at all. And my mom agreed. We just threw it out! Blech. Actually, "Yay! I'm a fan" of (most) Popcorn. But Velvet Creme Popcorn is Premium Popcorn. A King among Popcorn shops and is a local company with a very popular and successful mail order and school sales business. I especially love going to Velvet Creme mostly because of their primo selection of flavors. Their Carmel and Cinnamon flavors are wonderful and make Christmas extra special at our house. Even the plain Buttered Popcorn is very tasty. So when good ole Groupon offered $30 of Velvet Creme products for $15, I was all over that deal! Tuesday, Hubby and I were heading west of the state line and swung by the Velvet Creme retail shop. I have a whole stack of decorative tins from past visits, so this time I concentrated on picking out refill bags. This gave me flexibility on the flavors of my choice and besides getting my favorite: Cheese, I was able to taste-test the other available flavors from the sample bowls set out on the counter and was kind of blown away by three other flavors I have not tried: Sour Cream & Onion, Chili-Cheese AND Habanero Cheese. Those last two just add additional dimensions of flavor to my beloved Cheese Popcorn and the Habanero has an amazing heat-kick and will probably bring tears to my eyes but is sooo worth it! I love to snack. And since this fact is so, I am glad that I can snack on Popcorn. A serving size is two cups for the flavors I chose and each one averages slightly under 200 calories per serving. The carb count isn't too high and this is one snack that actually has dietary fiber in it. All around: a trip to Velvet Creme is a win-win activity. Every Saturday growing up, we ate popcorn for supper while gathering around the TV to watch "Walker Texas Ranger." So, by applying simple math, I have had popcorn at least 884 times in my life so clearly, I'm a fan. When I figured out that VCP was not just a production facility I had to jump at the chance. The actual facade, which I never saw from the street, is really pretty with huge windows suitable for seasonal decorating. I went on a Friday and the place was packed, a lot of people were filling and refilling those huge tins. At some point I've got to get in on that but this trip was all about the taste-testing. I chose a chili cheese and a caramel. It was hard to narrow it down to say the least, I also never found the habenero but that's for another time. It took a little while to check out but that was not only due to the amount of people but also the amount of products I kept wanting to buy. I escaped with said popcorn and a large diet coke for about $13. I tried the chili cheese first, it was buttery and saltily delicious. My plan is to mix the two but I was enjoying my first taste so much I didn't get to it yet. I'd really like to try more of their snacks too. They have several snack mixes, nuts and chocolate covered treats that even Chuck Norris couldn't resist. For now I'll enjoy my popcorn and add it to my local shopping options. read more

This place makes me nostalgic for my childhood. Sometimes they'll have a party with kids learning how to make their own popcorn balls. Other times I'll be near drooling at a bag of candy and an employee will ask "Do you want to try those cherry sours?" If I would have grown up in Kansas City, I would have been hitting up Velvet Creme every afternoon! Besides offering to open bags of snacks for you to sample, they always have several flavors of their fresh popcorn out to try along with Nutter Nuggets (rectangular pretzels filled with peanut butter). Although their popcorn is dreamy, I usually end up buying way too many bags of their Sweet and Crunchy mix. Available in Vanilla, Chocolate, and Peanut Butter (vanilla is the best!), it is heavenly! An almond bark type coating covers cheerios, pretzels, M&Ms, and some other secret ingredients...I have to hide them when I get home. Went to Velvet Creme Popcorn and was overwhelmed by everything I found in the retail store. From outside, the shop is deceiving. The staff was friendly and helpful. I wasn't quite sure about how the retail store worked at first, but after asking a few questions I realized there were more options than I had previously thought. The staff filled bags and tins to order for myself and other guests as well as pre-filled bags laid out on the shelves for a grab and go style experience. After looking through the catalog I found even more options for gifts and snacks. The shop is family owned and operated and has an intriguing history. I would highly recommend checking it out, especially if you're local to the Kansas City area. They also carry snack mixes and candies. Will definitely be going back. read more

I say this well-knowing it's sacrilege as a KC resident for a few years now, but Topsy's never did it for me. Gasp! Sure, it's good and all, but as far as my taste buds could assess, there was nothing that stood out among various cities' specialty popcorn shops. And the experience was never really pulled together by the inevitable complacent teenager behind the counter. On a whim, we stopped by VCP and were immediately welcomed, offered samples and invited to stay a while. We learned that the company was started by a mother making stove top popcorn and having her sons sell it door-to-door and eventually, the business grew to be the first company to offer popcorn in decorative tins which were actually hand-painted at the time. I have to imagine they shudder at the impostors on the Walmart shelves at Christmastime. No matter, they now ship worldwide, but completely maintain the small-business feel and every person behind the counter seemed to take great pride in the company. The popcorn itself comes in flavors far beyond and in addition to the standard butter, caramel, cheese, and cinnamon, but I have to say, their plain butter is phenomenal! We traveled to Kansas City from Cincinnati a few weeks ago, and decided to try this place using a Living Social deal. So glad we did! The store itself is big enough to offer a nice variety of goodies (and breathing room!) and small enough to still feel very cozy. It's very easy to find what you need in there. The people behind the counter were extremely helpful and still very patient even after the 86th question I must have asked! They provided excellent service throughout. The prices are also very reasonable, and even without the Living Social deal I wouldn't have griped about the prices. The deal just allowed us to try more stuff! The goodies themselves are wonderful. The stars of the show for us were the cheese popcorn (best I've had in the country thus far, and much better than the famed Garrett's), the white chocolate almond popcorn (as good as it sounds, do NOT pass this up) and the honey cinnamon almonds (sheer perfection). They really have their flavor profiles down, as nothing we had was either maddeningly sweet or too salty. We found ourselves in Kansas City a second time about a month after our first trip and decided to make sure the first experience wasn't a fluke (quality control, you know?). It was just as good the second time around, and I will definitely stop here each time I find myself in Kansas City. It also helps that Oklahoma Joe's BBQ is a few hundred yards away, making it the best sweet/savory 1-2 punch anywhere. read more

My wife & I just purchased a 6 1/2 gal tin of cinnamon,buttered,and caramel popcorn, brought it home and when we tasted the product were disappointed in the quality. The cinnamon and the caramel have kernels that were hard and seemed uncooked, the buttered tasted stale. I cannot give this popcorn 1 star. I hope that the management will start looking into the quality. I've known the label since Mr. White was selling it back in the sixties. read more

My family and I have ordered and loved the popcorn for ages. Now I would not even give a single star. I got a bad stale batch of snack bags. Have been requesting refund for several months. The Pres will not refund the $40. Didn't even want to take back the bad product to check problem. But did offer to send more. Why would I want more of a bad thing ? The expire date on bags is 12/15/14. And months ago were bad. All over $40. Very poor management. I have contacted numerous times and no help. Lost over 10 customers for this.
