Rotterdam has a few independent music stores left. My favorite is Velvet. Discovered it during my college years and never stopped loving it. If you can't find it here it's not very likely you'll find it somewhere else. Everything weird, obscure, limited edition, old, foreign or whatever, you can find or order here. If it's not in the store, they will do anything to get it for you. If they have not succeeded, I'm afraid you'll have to give up looking for it..... It's not just out of the ordinary music you can find, or special/ limited editions, they also have series and movies. A lot of them you have seen in art movie cinemas or at the IFFR (International Film Festival Rotterdam) If there's anything special you want, they have it for you. From Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton to the classic Pshyco movie or the latest Sundance flick. Lovers of Alfred Hitchcock can try their luck too. Foreign movies are in abundance upstairs. Liked the movie Eat, Woman, Man, Drink? Yup, they've got it! Liked Bin Jip? Yes please! During the IFFR I saw a few episodes of this amazing mini series Les Revenants. Heard I could buy it at Velvet. Off to velvet it is for me.
Velvet itself is an attraction on it's own. Nicely choosed music playing, wonderful shiney black and white pictures from the likes of Oasis and Nirvana a nice window display that changes every few weeks with new arrivals. Colorful vinyl lp covers. Yes they have a big collection of vinyl! So cool! There are even vinyl versions of new records/ cd's. And of course rows and rows of cd's. The cd's and vinyls contain pop, rock, jazz, grunge, new wave, motown, blues, folk, r&b, soul, house, 80's music, new soul, (uk)garage, triphop and anything else you can imagine. Upstairs you can buy tickets for (out)door festivals like extrema, sensation, latin village, pukkelpop, lowlands, pinkpop and indoor concerts. They sell a lot of concert tickets for Rotow. The other not so common place. The ticket booth is cover with outdoor festival posters and a big list of events. Gives you an outdoorsey feeling. Don't take my word for it, just go and discover it yourself! read more
