The actual gallery is small, but well respected, with ongoing exhibitions and just the place for the well heeled to find something tasteful and original. It is actually a pleasure to stroll around and just look, even if you can't afford to actually buy anything!

I hate to sound like a dork, but this gallery is SO COOL!…read more I've always passed by and been intruiged by the designers. I finally got a peek in today and was not disappointed. It's kept fairly minimal inside and each month it hosts a new exhibition, varying from art school graduates to independent illustrators attempting to get their name out there. I hate using contrived phrases but there's something very guerilla urban about this place - a lot of the art towards the back is made out of simple objects and spray painted before being sold off for a few very reasonable pennies. This month they're hosting illustrators from London but have new art moving in next week. For those interested in collecting any artist's work, the owners are very laid back and will provide you with all the information you need to become a fan. There are also some graphic tees at the back, mainly of a wild animal in the city type theme. Which sounds mind boggling, but you'd understand if you saw it. Bears in suits wrestling people and whatnot. There was some art in here that blew me away - most of it actually - but particularly a designer called Inkie, whose tag name does not begin to summarise the amount of beautiful elegance in their work. It was all very psychadelic, and seemed to bring Mucha into the 21st century. I fell in love. I love this gallery because it hosts local art with a difference. They have a number of catalogued sketches and original prints from artists of all areas but it's not commercial or high brow. The graphic design is outstanding in most and I adore the satirical sketches of a humourous nature (taking the piss out of pop culture like Kanye West, for example). The imagination stored in here is genuinely unique and brings a unique, street element to the art galleries in this area. One of the most exciting art galleries if you're big up on your Banksy or Dolk. I'm bowling over talking about this place because I was blown away with the talent showcased inside.

This delightful little graffiti treasure trove sweats honest art at an honest price…read more Located in a side road near Kelvin Bridge Subway, this petite shop must surely be a major contender for the spiritual home of Scottish street art. Its owners, Amy and Ally, may well be the hardest working pair in the graffiti business. Within a year the Recoat Gallery had snowballed from its West End corner to become a hub for Scotland's graffiti and ever blossoming street art scenes. It is now into the terrible twos and its continued success proves that Scotland's first dedicated graffiti space is more than just a gallery. With work from legends such as Crash and Daze (of Style Wars fame) dotted about the shop there are items to warrant even the most grandiose of chin strokes. For the more discerning of browsers the ever changing stock means that a trip will differ from month to month. I was particularly impressed by the Andrew Rae (Monkey Dust creator) collection. If you visit be sure to ask to see the mural on the side of the shop. It was painted as part of the galleries first birthday by UK heavyweights SHEONE, O, and the Edinburgh artist Elph and it is unique within Scotland. Each month ithe gallery hosts a new exhibition from an established artist or a rising prodigy. My personal favorite was the bike themed Two Year celebration instillation. Exhibitions are free and open to all and the vibe is always friendly, indeed the owners are all too happy to have a chin wag about anything, from the highs and lows of street art to the best way to stay dry while cycling. A Recoat tale which made me smile during on particularly brutal day of rain in Glasgow involved a disgruntled granny bellowing at Ally and his fellow artists as they put the finishing touches on the Kelvin Bridge mural (commissioned by the City Council). "What are you all doing?" she screamed. "You are not even wee!" Classic... Recoat is currently showing its two year bike themed exhibition. I hadn't been in a while and the exhibits have changed - there is a wide variety of contemporary work on display in different media. Art is subjective so I would say just go and see what piques your interest! Even if the work on show is not to your liking, the building itself is magnificent. The shop is well worth a look and has some cool arty gifts and souvenirs. There's also a café and public library downstairs.

Although it's so close to the bustle of Sauchiehall Street (about ten metres to be exact) on stepping into this Art Gallery you will feel as if you have been transported miles away. The Gallery is very spacious and boasts beautiful art exhibitions over three floors. One of these floors also contains a mixed exhibition - so you'll always find something that catches your fancy. At the moment the Roger Billcliffe Gallery houses an exhibition from the painter James Fullarton - and prices range from the very pricey to the horribly pricey. If you don't have that sort of money to throw around (don't worry, most of us don't!) this gallery is simply a wonderful place to have a wander around. You'll also find collections of jewelley and small sculptures on sale here - so it really is worth having a look. Plus, all three members of staff are very friendly and happy to talk to you about any of the art on display.

From the lighting to the small gift sized things, and sculptures, it is a nice pleasant experience if not a useless one. I can only afford the tiny replica prints which means that I am not necessarily a great customer, but I would reccomend this gallery if you are thinking of moving to a new home and would like a theme to go with. For a real flavour of how Mackintosh and his wife Margaret McDonald so radically transformed the…read moreart scene, I would recommend a visit to The Tenement House in Garnethill (which will show you what Glasgow tenements were like in Victorian days) before coming here. It is near-impossible to imagine that this interior started out as a typical Glasgow tenement on nearby Southpark Avenue, such is the transformation that they wrought on it. Moving from the typical dark Stygian Victorian décor to this wonderful temple of light that they created was a quantum leap in interior design that still resonates even today. The actual house was demolished as it was thought to be unstable when the University were building next to it - however it turned out to be not as bad as was originally thought and could have been saved, which leaves the University in something of a questionable position to say the least. It is rather ironic then that this specially-built extension to the Hunterian Art Gallery, constructed solely to house the interiors of the Mackintosh house, is now in such a parlous state of disrepair itself that it is going to have to be dismantled and moved to the new Kelvin Hall museum extension where it is not going to enjoy the wonderful natural light and east-facing views that it currently has. Mackintosh's interiors are all about the light - how it can be introduced and channelled into the space. He installed extra windows in the south wall of the house and in the hallway used a mirror to spread the light around the otherwise dark wooden walls. Little arrays of square stained glass pieces (something of a Mackintosh trademark) catch your eye when the light is behind them. In the main living area, the transom in front of the bay window is dropped to just above head height, which seems very counter-intuitive until you see how this matches up with the height of the doors, the dropped picture rail, the new side window, and the opening knocked through to the back room (yes, this is not a modern idea!). It completely changes the proportions of the space and focuses the light where it is needed. The house contains the Mackintoshs' own furniture - all to their design of course - and there are some wonderfully quirky pieces, such as the small wooden chair with the heart- (or buttock-) shaped depression on the seat that looks so inviting. The large high-sided box chair (surely inspired by Orkney chairs) looks as though it would be very cosy on a draughty winter's day. I also loved his personal writing cabinet in the rear space, which with its doors open looks almost like a small Japanese lady in a kimono; Mackintosh, along with several other of his fellow artists, at the time, was heavily influenced by Japanese design that was just starting to make an appearance in the West. I could continue to wax lyrical about the Mackintosh house as I love it so much, but there is also the main Hunterian Art Gallery to consider. Personally I find this rather overshadowed by the Mackintosh house, yet it is a fine collection and there are some notable works by Rubens, Rembrandt and Chardin as well as the Scottish Colourists and Glasgow Boys. It also has the largest collection anywhere of works by American artist James McNeill Whistler. The Art Gallery is free, although they sometimes charge for special exhibitions, but there is a small charge (£5) for entry to the Mackintosh House. Get there early on a sunny morning (it opens at 10am, 11am on Sundays) for the best experience.

It's on until 21st June 2015 and I think I'll be back again because it was fascinating and there were so many books to look at. The University of Glasgow has an outstanding collection of paintings, books, artefacts and many many other things. Much of it is from William Hunter's collection hence the Hunterian Art Gallery and Museum but there are many other collectors who have sold or gifted amazing things to the uni. And now we get to see it all FOR FREE! This is what blows me away about the art galleries and museums in this fine city. The Hunterian Art Gallery has a wonderful collection of paintings with many works by Whistler. I'm not very knowledgeable about Art History but I love wandering round here in the afternoon, it's peaceful and interesting. It doesn't attract many children or families in the way that Kelvingrove does so you can get around without dodging hectic toddlers! The Mackintosh House is a must see and they run regular short tours throughout the day. I would quite like to live in the White Room if that could be made possible?! The only thing I don't like about the Hunterian is that the building is a bit dated, I think it opened in the 80s and hasn't changed much since. Other than that it's a great place to visit if you're in the area and interested in art and painting.

The mystery man I later discovered, was a former member of the Coachhouse Trust! The Coachhouse Trust is a highly proactive charity based in the heart of the community, working with the aim of rehabilitating people with a broad spectrum of mental health issues and behavioural difficulties. Although the studio is based behind the shop in the rather ornate Belmont Lane, the place I'm reviewing acts as an exhibition space for the phenomonal creations that have been born from this project. Because the course encourages people who feel isolated to discover their creative potential, the carved wooden sculptures appear to be a captivating mixture of very controlled craftsmanship and untempered, raw ingenuity. The wild and yet completely controlled pieces, varying from birds to naturalistic pieces are beautiful to look at, and even more pleasing when you realise the sheer joy that that been carved by their creators. A guy who used to be part of the program drank in the local bar I worked in - he came in one day with an eagle he had carved from an old tree bark, sat it on top of the bar and instantly got offered 5 grand for it. Such is the calibre of the work exhibited here. Not only is the gallery worth a look in voyeuristic terms but the effort made from staff and individuals should also be considered, as these pieces are a stunning example of what can come of the emancipated imagination.

The Coach House Trust Gallery on Great Western Road is an art gallery with a bit of a difference…read more It's linked to Glasgow's Coach House Trust charity - and so is all in aid of a good cause. The gallery owners are really friendly, and are happy for you to have a browse around. You'll find some wonderful paintings of local sights - including the Western Infirmary, the University and the West End institution that is The University Cafe. (Although why you'd want to pay £300 for a painting of the University Cafe I'm not entirely sure). As well as the more expensive paintings on the wall, inside this gallery you'll also find some unframed prints of various styles starting from just £20. Great if you're looking to bring some culture to your home but can't afford to pay huge gallery prices!

I've visited the Modern Institute (this is the one behind Mono and in front of Infinity Yoga on Osborne St) a couple of times because of all the amazing shows the host! This time I went for the GIFestival. Along with many other gallery in Glasgow, this one has a very industrial vibe to it, with exposed roofs and big windows trapping sunlight, white walls and massive wide spaces. This one however is a bit more polished than for example, Glue Factory or Tramway. Equally as amazing though! They also have this big window that allows passer-byers to look into the gallery and see the main works, ya know, in case they're in a hurry or don't want to enter the gallery but are curious anyway haha. I like this gallery a lot. I've been exposed to many amazing artists through here and I look forward to see more exhibitions being hosted by the Modern Institute! They also have a part 2 gallery at Aird's Lane but I'll write about that on their actual Yelp business page. :-) Love it!

I always assumed this was a pop up art store and only here for a short period, on passing by…read morerecently noticed that this small art store was still here and that was a year ago. With nearly all the space in the wall there are a number of masterpieces on display from artists from Glasgow many if the artists who have work's displayed here studied at the Glasgow school of art. Some prices range from the lower thousands of pounds to over ten thousand. There are also prices of individual crafted furniture For sale in this shop, very nice items. Definitely a place to recommend if you want to own an original piece of Glasgow art.
