But they said that there was no need to worry, they wouldn't go out and eat something mediocre just for the sake of doing something "different". And sure enough - both the fish and the chips were just fine. The way they are supposed to be - the fish not too soggy, not too dry, crusty batter and all, and the fries nice and crispy, really fresh and, well, all potato. Clearly more than just some novelty place for non-discerning locals or homesick tourists. Some of us said that the oil they use for frying could be not just good but excellent, but I didn't really find anything wrong with it. Good tasty fun to start a Saturday night on Bagdat Caddesi.

I am always happy when I get to try local beers, even better if at a local brewery…read more In Istanbul we had some free time so we took a taxi up to The Populist. The Populist is a brewery and restaurant that's part of the Bomontiada complex, a large area with shops, restaurants, art, and nightlife. The Populist is known for its craft ales, homemade beer, and tasty burgers. It also serves halal food, wine, cocktails, coffee, and late-night food. It has a cool, funky design (see the picture of me). We got a flight of six of their beers, which were all solid! Our favorites were the Tokyo Zen Lager and the India Pale Ale. In the Flight: -India Pale Ale -Scottish Ale -Tokyo Zen Lager -Honey Pepper Ale -Winter Bock -Vienna Lager _______

They share the complex with a couple of other restaurants. There's plenty of seating inside and outside on the patio facing the courtyard. The menu can be scanned on your phone and is in both Turkish and English. I had the brisket plate for lunch and it was quite good. Let's face it though, the main reason to visit is for the Torch beer. I enjoyed both the IPA and nitro stout. Torch has to be one of the top breweries in Istanbul as far as the quality of their beer.

Coming from a developed nation we are accustomed to eating moderately to great quality of fish, I understand from a local that seafood is really unaffordable to the regular citizens of Turikye, so I understand that a fast and affordable option is available. However, there is no seasonings on this fish, just slightly grilled, and there is a kinda-of-lemon dressing and salt and the table perches around their establishment looking over onto western side of the Bosporus Straight, dressed inside with sliced onion and some lettuce. The bread that enrobes the fish is a huge piece of hogie, sub bread really too much bread for fish -- and let me not start on the bones?! I ate the fish without the bread, just dressed with salt and every bite there were leat 3-5 bones and the fish had a lot of fat I left behind. Meh meh meh recommendation. I will commend their quickness to serve the food, and the massive amounts they crank out. I think this fish is a small spanish mackerel of some kind?
