This is my come to restaurant whenever I visit the area. I've been coming here for a very long time. I love the lunch special (M-F). The service is good, and the decor and atmosphere is busy small town cafe (but it's actually a big place). The weather turn bad so I aborted my trip to Leona Country Store redirected Vernon's Country Cafe. It's always been a good stop and I don't get there that often. I was grateful that the hostess quickly led us to the rear room where the air conditioning was not blasting as hard and promptly took our order. One of the things I really look forward to is munching on pickled tomatoes and hushpuppies serve while wanting for our meals. I had the fried catfish dinner and my wife had the fried shrimp and catfish dinner. Our side were french fries and coleslaw. As always the food was fantastic. Vernons is a regular routine when we come to Conroe. Whether you enjoy catfish or a country fried steak, your meal is guaranteed to be both filling and tasty. We have yet to have a bad experience in the past 15 years of visiting and would gladly recommend it to anyone who loves good food. The restaurant was remodeled several years ago and they did a wonderful job rebuilding. The atmosphere is friendly, welcoming and all you could ask for wrapped up in a comfortable setting. We had excellent service. We ordered catfish. The option of small. There is large. Husband had blackened catfish. He gobbled it up. MIL had gumbo. Which she has ordered several times. We had several sides. Rice pilaf, Mac n cheese, fried okra, potato salad, coleslaw. Complimentary hush puppies. We loved almost everything. The mac n cheese. Not my favorite. Why 2 stars? Because I honestly didn't like pretty much anything. --- --- --- I've driven by Vernon's about a hundred times and the parking lot is always full. While fried catfish is not exactly something I ever think about, I was quite curious to see what all the hype was about. Unfortunately, the food was just really disappointing. As I've gotten older, my body only accepts so much fried food before it just hits a wall. But if it's really tasty, I'll still manage to power through. This, however, was not tasty enough to do that. We started off with complimentary hush puppies and some kind of pickled tomatoes (maybe they weren't tomatoes, but I'm not sure what they were). These were probably my favorite items of the meal. We ordered a fried platter of catfish, pickles and cheese sticks. The catfish basically just tasted like fried batter. The cheese sticks tasted like they were purchased from the frozen section from Kroger a couple of weeks earlier. And the marinara sauce had a bizarre flavor that is hard to even describe. For my entree, I wanted to order the catfish because it's the namesake of the business. But to be honest, I'd already gotten my fill of catfish from the appetizer, which was exactly the same, only in bite size form. I was given six pretty large "tenders" and could only manage eating two before I reached the end of my stomach space. I *n-e-v-e-r* leave food on my plate, but I couldn't even finish half of it. My sides were mac-n-cheese and a loaded baked potato. These were both equal to the quality you'd get at a middle school cafeteria or a bowling alley. I hate to trash a business like this, but when the food is so far below par, it's hard to be constructive in my criticism. Everyone we interacted here was friendly and the interior of the restaurant was much nicer than I assumed it would be based off the outside of the building. But this was one of the worst meals I've had in a while and a huge regret for me to waste a cheat meal here. read more

We ordered the kid's grill cheese, that my toddler really seemed to enjoy. They brought hush puppies and pickled green tomatoes to the table, a nice touch cause they'll refill them for you as much as you want! We tried the catfish, which was crispy outside and flakey and pretty moist inside. Fiancé also ordered the chicken fried steak, which was huge!! But he said it was one of the best chicken fried steaks he's had in awhile. I loved the fried okra and actually preferred the catfish bites over the large pieces! Comes with your choice of sides. Stopped here for lunch with my teenage son and my daughter who lives in Texas. The restaurant was half full and we were seated immediately by friendly staff. The menu is pricey $18.95 for four pieces of catfish and two sides. I asked for lemonade and waitress assured me they had real lemonade, but instead, I was served Minute Maid lemonade, which is actually a lemon drink. She wasn't happy that I told her to take it back. The catfish was just OK and all the sides were bland, mac & cheese, potato salad. They give complementary hush puppies while you're waiting for your food and those were flavorless and bland too. They need to hire real old fashioned Southern cooks who know how to spice up food instead of untrained amateurs in the kitchen. Don't think the food will change because Vernon's has a customer base that hasn't experienced real southern comfort food and think it's just fine, sad. Also, note food is cooked in peanut oil, and prominently displayed on the menu, so if you have allergies, you can't eat here. read more

We visited Vernon's recently - twice in a month I might add - because it was just that good. The fish was fresh and pleasantly portioned, the pickled green tomatoes... well let's just say I wasn't sure what to expect, but surprisingly it was sweet and tangy and it was good! Oh, and the shrimp - abundant! The sides were plentiful (although I'm still not sure what to make of their "mashed" potato salad), and the tea not too sweet. I loved the okra which can be pretty easy to mess up - yet it was crunchy & tasty. If you're local & seeking a family owned establishment in the Lake Conroe area - this place is it. Our salads were crisp and fresh with plenty of dressing. The Crawfish Etouffee was good sized, with a tad less spice than expected. The combo plate was ordered with the Kuntry fries which were VERY plentiful (think a medium at five guys sized!). The fish was surprisingly crispy and the Shrimp were good sized. We had just moved to Conroe Texas and saw this place on the 105. Wasn't so sure about it but I really do enjoy catfish and thought we should try it. Glad we did. The food here was fantastic! We each ordered the Small Katfish fried meal served with Cole Slaw and the Mac n Cheese. This was some truly delicious and well prepared Catfish although my wife was surprised that the catfish was coated in corn meal and not beer battered like she is used to. I love it! The Cole Slaw and the Mac n Cheese were delicious as well and will be my choice of sides for the future. The service was extremely quick, friendly and really reasonably priced. When the few hush puppies were gone, they were replenished. The surcharge is quite small and worth the cost. These used to be comped, but with food prices, I can understand the minuscule charge. I was politely impressed by Vernon's. I am by far a fine dining kind of babe. But the down home chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, and green beans were just what I needed to remind me of grandma. Everything was seasoned to perfection. The steak was crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. The potatoes were perfectly whipped. I even tried the catfish which was nice and flavorful and crisp. Coming home from one of our tournaments in Conroe we stopped in at this kuntry katfish kafé. Cute little place. Very clean inside and lots of comfort food. My husband got the small order of fried catfish fillets and he couldn't even finish it. It was four pieces it was huge. I can imagine the large that has six pieces would be way too much. But he said it was really really good. I did taste it. I'm not a big catfish person because it usually takes somebody to me but this catfish actually was a very clean tasting. It was really good. The beans were real good that came with it. He also ordered the seafood gumbo. I tasted that and yes, it was delicious. Really full of shrimp and crawfish and all kinds of stuff. And the coleslaw was super creamy which we liked. Very good taste. I went ahead and ordered a cheeseburger Because I'm always looking for a good cheeseburger. I was kind of disappointed because although the meat was a half pound, which is good, it was pre-formed And no spices in it so you can tell it was probably a frozen patty or a patty that they already had just in the freezer refrigerator. I went to patties and they're just mashing together and they're filling it with spices and slapping it on the grill. So wasn't real happy about that but the fries were real good. They were soft and tasty. All the other ingredients on my cheeseburger were very fresh. Good big pieces of jalapeño on there. Then for dessert. My husband ordered the Good Pie - yep that's what it's called. This was basically, whip cream and pecans bananas and pineapples and flaky crust with some chocolate drizzle on top. It was really really really good. Really disgustingly good. . I brought home their banana pudding. It was good - nothing super special but it was good. It didn't have any Nilla Wafers in it which that's my favorite part of banana pudding. So I was a little disappointed at that. But all in all I will definitely come back - it's a cute little place. Our waitress, Mikela - she was so so sweet and very attentive. And I think I would like to try some of the other stuff. I would like to try the fried shrimp that looked really good. We saw it on another table. So I would like to give it a try. Never been here before and only because we don't live in Conroe. But went fishing on lake Conroe and my guide mentioned to us to get some hush puppies on way home to go with the fish we caught. We found info online and called in our order so we could just jump out of truck and pick up. Price was great $2.50 per dozen we order 6 dozen and when we picked up they also gave us some sorta of tomato relish to dip them into and it was really good... Hush puppies were hot and of course made to order...we ordered the spicy ones and they had a nice kick to them. Sooooo yummy! I don't even like seafood and i like their catfish! The fries are fresh cut and so good! They serve you homemade hush puppies, which are amazing!, and tomato relish at the beginning of your meal. I love the fried pickles as an appetizer! They have fried green tomatoes and fried squash as well. I will get the choose three next time and do the pickles, tomatoes & squash! The chicken fried steak is the best I have ever had. It is tender and can be cut with a fork...it does not have gristle and is not chewy. I have had it several times and it has been consistently good.
