You don't really know Conroe until you have had a meal of two at Vernon's. I feel like this restaurant embodies what Conroe is at the core. It has a very locals only vibe with a great selection of fried seafood options. The trick to it all is order it just how it comes with the side of pintos, coleslaw and hush puppies (oh man that green tomato relish is where it's at). My wife and I went to Vernon's for our anniversary. It was our first visit and was selected as we liked the menu we saw online. We were more than pleased with the experience, The Crawfish etuoffee was fantastic as was the stuffed crab and fried Catfish. The fried shrimp were huge. The cocktail sauce and ranch dressing were made in house and were better than one can imagine. It is clear that the management pays attention to lots of little details. I so hate having to do this review! This used to be our special occasion restaurant because it's a little pricey. I've recently had surgery and my hubby wanted to treat me. It was a huge let down. The seafood was so good before we assumed it was fresh being so close to the gulf. But this time everything tasted frozen. That's the only explanation we can come up with why nothing had any flavor. I had shrimp and oysters. Oysters were way too chewy. Fish in my husbands platter was so thin there was hardly no meat at all just breading. Just so disappointed! read more

We found this place driving through Conroe and what looks like a hole in the wall is a hidden gem. Fantastic prices for great quality food. We had the catfish platter with okra and sweet potato fries and delicious hush puppies! We also had the blackened shrimp and scallops. Yum. Everything was very tasty. The catfish was cooked to perfection and it was an ample serving. So much so that we had to get a to go box. Did I mention the hushpuppies? DELISH! The only disappointment was the so called homemade coconut cream pie was bland and clearly had a store bought crust. But that won't stop us from coming back. We were on our way to Houston and my husband wanted to try this spot as it is named one of the Top 10 places for catfish and we are both seafood lovers! This little place caters to an elderly crowd. The lunch menu was priced well and it included a drink. The portion size was appropriate for lunch. I had the catfish with pinto beans, sweet potato fries and cornbread. I also ordered a six piece oyster. The seafood was served with a "spicy" tartar sauce upon request. The restaurant was clean and well kept. The patronage was not very diverse, but the service was friendly. So the next part of my review is based on my personal taste. The food was way too bland for me. It was as if it was not seasoned at all so I did not enjoy it all. The spicy tatar sauce was not spicy. I am a person who loves flavor and spice, so eating catfish that was simply dredged in cornmeal and fried just does not work for me. My actual rating based on the flavor and taste of the food alone would be 1 star, but as stated above, the staff was friendly and the overall dining experience earned the 2nd star. On a brighter note, the sweet tea is good and the restaurant was crowded so people who like this style preparation would love it, it is just not for me so I would not return. read more

This is our go to restaurant when we just don't want to cook. Food is good and the portions are large. 6 pieces of catfish and two sides for $16. Beats cooking at home. Fried pickles are very good. I really like the hush puppies and pickled tomatoes that come with your meal. Only thing I would suggest is the food has a touch to much salt. Let me say that I've eaten here many times over the years and it has always been wonderful. Well, tonight for the first time we ordered a catfish dinner for takeout. I should have taken it back because it was the worst put together meal I've ever seen. It was clearly put in a microwave before being picked because the plastic container of relish was melted. The fries were burnt, cold and grease soaked. The usually awesome hush puppies were tough as leather. At least the catfish was still edible. The final straw was finding a cube of bread in the cole slaw. What has happened to this place??????? read more

My family, friends, and relatives all enjoy visiting Vernon's for lunch or dinner. I've been dining here over 20 years, or often order takeout. The fried catfish is THE BEST ever! If you've never tried green, pickled tomatoes, you have to try them. They're awesome. Love this restaurant, as it reminds me of restaurants I went to as a kid. There are 2 big open rooms, and the servers are always bustling around trying to accommodate customers. This is one of our fave country restaurants by Lake Conroe. We've been coming here for years especially after boating. Now that says a lot because I don't like American food. I guess I like fried food and especially their free pickled green tomatoes and jalapeños hush puppies. Tip: Remember to ask for ranch dip right away so you'll have it for your hush puppies :)! Such a great treat! You can even purchase those pickled green tomatoes in 2 sizes of sealed jars to go :)!!! So what's on the menu? Fish, oysters, clams, steak and a kids menu. I usually order everything fried because they use peanut oil and even though it's been used over and over the taste works. There must be 10 side dishes including a good sized side salad. Never had a bad meal and must of eaten here over 3 dozen times. They also have a few yummy sounding desserts but I'm already getting to go boxes. The parking lot is large and not paved but you'll find parking. The only reason I give four stars is because it seems every time I'm given my free appetizers, then my salad comes and my meal, so close together that something gets cold. My mouth is only so big and I only can chew so fast....kids are totally welcomed. Its carpeted to absorb their screams. Consider this a good ole fashion restaurant for Conroe! These guys know how to turn a table! $11.00 before tip bought three small pieces of fried catfish and three sides: I chose mustard greens, potato salad, okra. Boring, but digestible. Tobasco on table was liberally applied. Ambiance: annoying loud. No music, but TVs prevent catatonic collapse. The proprietor or his agent struck up a conversation with a neighboring table. Nice guy, but he needs to work on using his indoor voice. Excellent place! Came here for lunch with the extended family who all showed up late but we were seated at a very spacious table for all of us and the service was great. If you want some southern comfort food then this is the place for you. I go for the great catfish but my buddy swears by the chicken fry. Servings are generous, service is good and the location is easy to access. The ambiance is what you would expect from a down-home catfish place. The only problem is after the meal at lunch time. I went back finally for the chicken n dumplings special. I would have gone sooner, but God has a sense of humor sometimes when he wants to put you on notice and shake things up a bit. Shortly after my last visit, I was placed on a heart healthy diet, but I will not get into the details as this is a food review, not health....but it was not a choice. Having said that, I have been eating well for almost two months and thought I could cheat a little....so to Vernon's I went. Now, funny thing about eating low fat, low salt ( low taste too) is you get used to it. My bowl of the good stuff came with a biscuit, great northern beans, and mustard greens. I have lived in the South most of my adult life and love southern/country cooking with chicken and dumplings and greens being my favorite items. I give you this background merely to say that I found everything too salty for ME. I did not take pictures as it pains me so. I could not enjoy my favorites as I believe my palate has changed. I know this is/was for a better future, but I am on the search now for a healthier way to enjoy my old favorites. Please remember, these are my tastes, an entire dining room of people daily at lunch and dinner regularly support my first review. A few months ago we visited Vernon's for the first time in a few years. We remember it as being a surprisingly good place considering the unimaginative building and decor. However, this time the food tasted quite flat - probably the oil they use, which in this case might have been old. The crust on the catfish and fries felt a little dull and maybe even dirty. And the catfish itself was not as fresh and firm as we remember. We might have caught them on a bad night or things may have slid, but we probably won't be back for a while. read more
