I've been to record stores all over the country and Vertigo is still my favorite by a long shot. You can always find Herm hanging out there ready to answer any questions. His music knowledge is mind blowing and he can always recommend something new for you. Incredibly diverse selection of old and new vinyl. Very easy to navigate. If they don't have what you're looking for they are happy to order it and they'll have it for you in a few days with no extra cost. Last but not least, the prices. Best prices I have ever found on vinyl, even compared to Amazon. So get out there and support your local record shop. read more

Vertigo is great for just about any type of music. I mostly buy techno and house, and though their rack of new electronic CDs is a bit sparse, the many shelves and crates of used 12"s in the back more than make up for it. It's a rare occurrence that I walk out empty-handed, and if you're the sort of person who likes rock or punk, things will be even better for you. And here's the thing: if for some reason they don't have a new release that you're looking for, talk to Herm (the owner) and he'll get it for you. And by "get it," I mean "special order it from his distributors and then call you back a few days later to tell you that your records are ready for pickup at retail price or less." It's quite an operation. One last point: be sure to subscribe to the e-mail list on their website. Along with detailing some new releases, it contains discounts on many of those releases that you can only get if you bring a printout of the mailing to the store. read more

Massive! This store is massive! Great staff, killer selection across genres.....My only complaint is that some of the new sections are on the other side of the store from the used, while others are side by side. But it does force you to wander and see everything! I found stuff that was totally fair at retail and they accepted an offer I made on a used record! This really pains me. It really, really does. I love a local music store. I was up near Grand Rapids for a concert and (like always) hopped on yelp to see if any good used music stores were around. The reviews were rapturous for Vertigo. Even though it was a good deal out of my way I decided to have a go. It took a bit to find some parking and I found myself at the store 10 minutes before it's supposed to open at 11am. No big deal though. I just walked around and tried to stave off the cold. Around 10:58 I settle in and wait for the doors to open. 11:03 comes. I'm sure it'll open any second, right? It's a local business. Maybe it's either run by the owner or some college kid was supposed to open it and is just running a little late. These things happen. Down the street a guy gets out of his car... but he's just another customer who is expecting it to open and can't get in. He retreats to the warmth of his car. 11:07 rolls around and I'm cold and getting a little annoyed. I call their number. No answer. So they aren't even in yet! A family is rushing across the street. They're going into an apartment above the store. Could this be the owner? Maybe he was out shopping with his family? Maybe. I decide to give it a few more minutes. I tell myself I'll stay to 11:10. The guy with the family saw me. If he WAS the owner or a worker he'd be sure to rush down, right? Well, I give it to 11:11 and still no one comes to the door. I call the number again. Still no one answers. At this point I'm hoping the guy with the family wasn't the one who was supposed to be working there because that would just be totally rude. I'm pretty sure he wasn't. As for who was... and where they were over 10 minutes after they were supposed to open... who knows. So I make the way back to the car. It takes a bit and as we drive by I look... still closed. This was close to 20 minutes after the store was supposed to be open. This is not a way to run a business. And it makes me sad because it sounded so great from the other reviews. In fact, if I'm ever up that way again (unlikely, but you never know) I'll check it out again and do another review. Until then, this review has to stand as it is because I've got no other choice. I didn't get to check out the great prices. I didn't et to see the great selection or check out the zines. I just stared at the (frankly, pretty ugly) store front for 15 minutes. And that's really too bad. Being there and open when you say you're going to be is one of the most basic things a business can do. Maybe my loss will be other customer's gain if they can learn from this. read more

If you're into vinyl, this place is AWESOME. My girlfriend and I were in Grand Rapids over Xmas and a family member recommended we check this place out. We are both into vinyl. Coming from Wicker Park in Chicago, we have the luxury of many vinyl shops. The downside is the good used vinyl is pillaged quickly. Vertigo was awesome and we spent over an hour rummaging through their collection of new and used vinyl. I left with a MINT Physical Graffiti, Led Zeppelin III and IV as well as two Beetles records for about $40. They also have a great selection of new vinyl. We will be back the next time were are in GR, possibly with a U-Haul. read more

Being from Madison, WI, we have a lot of great records stores with nice vinyl selection - Vertigo Music blew them ALL out of the water. Not only did they have a bigger selection of vinyl albums including rare and unusual finds, but their PRICES EVEN BEAT AMAZON!!! How can this be? (you ask yourself.) Stopped by last minute before me and the gf went back home to Chicago. It was only supposed to be a quick look since we had a three hour drive ahead. If you picture a nice local record store, you're picturing Vertigo. Going to Vertigo is a great experience, and not only for the music. Every employee is extremely nice and knowledgeable, and always willing to help out. The prices are great, especially on used CD's which have a warranty. They have a great selection of music too, for me specifically the industrial section has a good variety of bands such as Frontline Assembly, Front 242, etc. that would you would NEVER find at another store. read more

Very good record store. My wife and I ducked out of a wedding for an hour to check this place out. Owner was super friendly. Big store and lots of customers. The crowd was young and I was surprised how into vinyl they were. Prices more then fair and quality of used vinyl better then expected based on the price. Everything I bought as far as the media quality was close to mint. I bought six originals from the 60s. Fun stuff for around 30 bucks. I will come back when we visit Grand Rapids again. read more

They have a nice selection of both used and new vinyl at very reasonable prices. Their selection is also very vast among genres, and includes some nice rarities also. Vertigo is the one thing that keeps me coming back to Grand Rapids. I consider my taste in music to be a little off the beaten track. While I'm not pretentious enough to think of myself as someone who scopes out the most random and obscure things, I do have a bit of difficulty finding things I want in record stores from time to time. I have never had this experience with Vertigo. They have a great vinyl selection, a great CD selection, even a great (although small) book & zine selection. In short, it's the perfect record store - the kind you see in movies about bored kids with no money, who spend their time drinking cheap beer and going to basement shows. Not to mention it's a couple doors down from the DAAC, the only useful venue in Grand Rapids. read more

I only had about half an hour to browse. I found a few interesting records, but didn't see anything super rare or collectible. Prices seemed very reasonable with lots of stuff under $20 and even a good amount under $10. Only real negative is that the listening station had a damaged stylus that could easily cause damage to records if somebody used it for too long. read more

Fantastic record store. I could've spent hours in here. Lots of indie releases I was surprised to find, and plenty of old classics. Prices are very very reasonable and considerably cheaper than other locations. Most new releases were 15-25 bucks, which is less than you're typical FYE store. And of course, the old bargain bin records were reasonably priced as well. read more

I was in Grand Rapids for a week in May for business. I'm from Minneapolis where we have handful of good record/music stores. I'm a confessed vinyl junkie and love to visit record stores when I travel. Vertigo is a Gem! I spent a couple of hours here on a Tuesday evening. Had a great conversation with Herm...learned a little about him, his music philosophy, and Vertigo's history. Searched the used and new vinyl. Walked out with a used Audiophile Series import of Rush "Moving Pictures" and a new copy of The Kills "Blood Pressures". Great used inventory and Best new vinyl prices I've ever seen. I was in town for a quick visit from Los Angeles and instantly fell in love with the selection offered from this music store! Not only do they have a wide variety and a incredibly knowledgeable staff but the prices they offer are under the going asking prices! I was in there all of five minutes and I overheard the manager talking to a customer who was having an issue with a record they just bought. The first thing he asked was. "What type of record player do you have?" The customers answer was "A Crowley" the Cashier then said "there is the problem." He then allowed the customer to go pick out anything else they wanted that was the same price. He also explained why it was an issue. When I had just gotten back into buying LP's I bought a crappy Crowley and I wished someone would have told me this! I also saw them help a new kid who came in, "god bless him" ,and asked about Jazz because he wanted to get into it. They threw some Byrd and Diz his way and that made me smile. Fantastic shop that I wish we had in LA! Hell of a store! Great Selection and Very knowledgeable! Indie, 90's, Brit Rock 70's,Punk,Jazz and many niche albums from all genres that seem to be tough for me to find in LA. read more

While this record store doesn't have the music that I love on vinyl, they do have a great selection of records. I haven't been there without buying at least two records. They have a lot of new vinyl, and a huge selection of used (even a decent amount of jazz, which is pleasurable). The staff are very nice and keep theirself. They just let you check out records instead of hounding you. Highly recommended to anyone who likes records. read more

This was quite the hip little place if I do say so my self. I haven't done a lot of record shopping but I'm trying to get into it a little bit more because it's what my (younger!) bf is into. We were able to grab a copy of his favorite Deathcab for Cutie album on vinyl and I found a 30 seconds from mars CD that I used to own but lost. It was very very reasonably priced as well. The staff was friendly and seemed very knowledgable. I was worried we weren't able to park but if you go to the left of the show, around the corner and down the little hill there is cheap ($7 for a whole day) parking that seems pretty clean and safe. Overall I'd recommend this place. Only reason I gave it four stars is because I don't have a lot of experience with record shops so I wasn't sure what to compare it to. read more

I love this place and have loved it for years. I'm so glad this place it's thriving even after the sad and heartbreaking downfall of the DAAC. To me, this place holds a very special spot in my heart and is a huge part of the downtown Grand Rapids music scene. I used to browse this store for, like, hours.
