The grounds are beautiful, our room was enormous and the staff paid attention to every detail during our stay. My wife and I just renovated our house and we put in a pool and landscaping that borrows from the aesthetic of Castello del Nero's pool area. We are already planning to return for my 40th birthday...3 Years from now. We spent 3 weeks in Italy at 6 different hotels and this is the only one I think about and have to return to. The restaurants are both amazing and the breakfast is the best we had on our trip. If I could give 10 stars I would, so if you're even considering a stay at Castello del Nero I'd say look no further...it's time to book a reservation.

This hotel is a really high-end boutique hotel that really goes above and beyond to deliver an outstanding experience for all guests. The hotel is conveniently located in a small town about 30-40 minutes by car from Florence (between Florence and Siena). It is in the Chianti wine region of Tuscany. We stayed in a basic room, which was very nice. It was very large (one of the largest hotel rooms I have ever stayed in that wasn't a suite). There was a welcome bottle of champagne (already chilled for us) as well as a bottle of red wine and a huge basket of fresh fruit ready for us on our coffee table. There was a hand-written note to us that was a nice personal touch. The room had a beautiful view of the Tuscan countryside. The things that really stood out to me were: 1. Complimentary welcome champagne and wine 2. Abundant fruit basket that got replenished daily. 3. Complimentary bottled still and sparkling water replenished daily. 4. A pillow menu for guests! 5. Full breakfast every morning included with the room - there were 10 different kinds of milk out to suit everyone's preference (almond, soy, rice, goat, etc.) 5. The very nice spa 6. The setting of course! You literally couldn't ask for a more picturesque place! 7. Complimentary up to date movies on your TV 8. Great hiking trails right on the property My only (very small) complaints are that there was no dresser or shelves in the room - I had nowhere to unpack any of my folded clothes (there is only hanging space in the closet), and the mattress is very firm (this is just a personal issue though!). This hotel is very special and truly understands how to deliver a higher than 5-star experience to guests. I would highly recommend it for honeymooners, or anyone wanting a relaxing getaway in a beautiful place!

Borgo di Vescine is an upscale hotel nestled in the wooded hills above Radda in Chianti. This was…read moreoriginally an historical hamlet ("Borgo") painstakingly renovated into the hotel. Its just over 30 rooms, each unique with their own --sometimes a bit kooky--character (since they were renovated from what had once been individual dwellings and other buildings in the hamlet.) Visually it's just gorgeous. There's a small common piazza, which they use for sumptuous outdoor dinners in warmer weather. A well-appointed dining room and restaurant if you want to just stay onsite. They also have a very nice pool and sunbathing area, complete with a poolside bar; a cozy dining room and breakfast patio (the breakfast buffet is just terrific.) The grounds include a small olive grove and vineyard (the latter in the process of being re-planted.) They make their own olive oil and wine, both of which you can taste in their guest building, guided by their onsite sommelier. The service level is extremely high; everyone was very helpful and friendly, and attentive to our needs. They get a bit flummoxed by larger groups (there was a large noisy biking tour staying there when we were there) but that's probably the exception not the rule. The clientele is varied--from all over Europe and other countries (which we found lots of fun and educational.) Families, couples and assorted tour groups. In warmer months Vescine would be an idyllic, luxurious place to just sit and relax poolside. (It was just a bit too cool for this in early May.) Otherwise it's a perfect location to use as a base for exploring the Chianti Classico district, and 10 minutes each by car from Radda, Castellina and Panzano, the nearest 3 hill towns. Easy driving transit. There are many restaurant and winery choices for you both in these 3 towns and in between. In fact there's a highly regarded winery (Istine) right next door. Our stay was very pleasant, since we used it as an exploration base for 5 nights. One small disappointment for us was the lack of real walking trails and thus the (relative) isolation of the place except via car. Vescine really is amidst some of the highest and densest woods in the Chianti Classico district, and there is very little in the immediate vicinity that can be reached by foot. SS429 (the road running by Vescine en route to Radda and elsewhere) makes it too dangerous for pedestrians, and a bit of a challenge for all but the most intrepid bikers.There isn't much right nearby anyway, except for one roadside Osteria and a winery. Locals say there are ancient footpaths going to various other hamlets but these aren't evident or marked in any way. So...you either drive, bike (very carefully!) or stay put. However, if a relaxing time in one beautiful locale is your "vibe", you can hardly go wrong. This is a lovely, lovely place., and the staff will pamper you to no end.

It is…read moreuphill, so it might take you longer, but a reasonably fit person can do it in less than 5 minutes. The property is in the middle of a quiet residential neighborhood. It's safe and quiet. If you book this property, do so because of its stellar location! And if you have a car, it's easy to park here (though there's a hefty fee, I believe we paid 15 Euros per night) and not have to fuss with the ZTL zones inside San Gimignano's walls! The hotel has lots of extra "gotcha" charges -- extra for wi-fi, extra fee for parking in their lot out front, etc. The grounds were lovely and the views spectacular. If you book a cheap room, get ready to overlook houses. If you are staying more than a night, it's worth it to book a view room -- the views of the Tuscan hillside are breathtaking. The free breakfast was abysmal, I left without eating. Lots of dried out boxed pastries, sliced deli meat and yogurt. Not many options. Sleep in and don't waste your time on it, there's too much GOOD food to eat in Tuscany! The hotel itself is just okay. It's old and dated and our "Small Double" room was not as nice as the common areas suggest. It was dark and tiny. The bathroom was so cramped it was ridiculous. Yeah, I've stayed in lots of hotels all over the world and I know European rooms are always smaller than rooms in North America, but banging my shins on the bidet and squeezing into the shower is my idea of tiny living! The staff was friendly. I did enjoy the large balcony attached to our room although we had no view. It was nice to sleep with the doors open to let the fresh, cool air inside. Nice toiletries were provided as well. The pictures on their website are pretty accurate, they don't really try to "sugar coat" their representation of what you get.
