My family brought me here while I was visiting from Dallas. Most people say Dallas has amazing Indian food, but Viceroy was beyond anything Ive tasted in Dallas out of the ballpark. This little gem is located in the heart of Durham and is a serious must visit! Initial reaction: Walked in and was immediately greeted by smiling faces. We had reservations and were promptly seated. The restaurant was clean and food smelled amazing. Overall great ambiance. I let my family take the lead in ordering the food and in my excitement to eat the food, I did not get pictures of anything except the dessert :/. I had a glass of Malbec that was just what I needed after a day traveling. For apps we had some bhaji chaat that was fantastic. It was the perfect portion and well balanced flavors. Of course, you can't go to a British Indian fusion joint and not try a vegetarian pasty! Seriously though, TRY IT! it was not super oily like a lot of pastys (pasties?) Ive had in the past. Perfect flaky crust and again well seasoned filling. The Red Thai Paneer was delicious. Tender paneer with a great balance of asian spice flavors with a hint of the coconut adding some sweetness. The veggies and paneer were perfectly grilled and not overly charred. Garlic naan was fresh and delicious, great to eat alone or with any of the entrees. Coming to the entrees... from a vegetarian standpoint, I highly recommend the Panch-Ratna Daal and Paneer Mykanwala. Both were seriously delicious without being overly heavy or doused with cream. The dessert special for the day was Cadbury Shahi Tukra and it was absolute deliciousness. I loved that it was not overly sweet. I am a huge coffee and chocolate lover and this just hit the spot. If you are ever in Durham, go to this gem of a place. It is one culinary experience you do NOT want to miss! Service was great. There wasn't anything not to like. Viceroy was an enjoyable experience from every aspect. Having been to pubs in London, I really appreciated how authentic the decor was: I felt like i was in a genuine pub - dim lights, buzzing crowd and random wall art. Granted, if you're a party of 2, you might get seated in a communal dining table. Some people like it, some don't - I personally hate that idea and was glad I was with a party of 4 and got an individual table. The food was amazing, everything was very flavorful and the dishes were complex and not at all basic; something I've come to appreciate from restaurants serving popular cuisines. I had the fried cauliflower appetizer and seafood curry, 10/10. The waitress was incredibly friendly and despite being lost in conversation, I did notice that the meal did take some time to come out but the appetizers arrived instantly. This is my favorite restaurant! The food is excellent and always tastes the same, never varies in taste or quality! The staff is very friendly and I have made friends with many of them. Had a great time at this spot! The food was quality and ambiance was cool - the only reason I am not giving 5 stars is because they somewhat rushed us through dinner. Granted, we should have made reservations and planned better but our schedule was very much up in the air. We asked for a table for 3 at 6pm on a Saturday and they seated us but said we had to give up the table in 45 minutes. That's fine and we were cognizant of the clock but our server also mentioned it a couple of times which I felt was a little much. Now, the food was excellent! Kind of like fancier Indian street food. We loved everything we tried: Bahji with Chaat (it was different than I expected, kind of like Indian style nachos that you eat with a fork rather than fritters SO YUMMY) Vegetable Amb Curry : sauce was some of the best curry I've ever had. Comes with white rice. Murg Mykanwala : chicken curry that was very tasty and extremely flavorful. Garlic Naan: excellent, can't really mess this up. We chose a spice level 3/5 for everything and thought it had a nice kick but wasn't overpowering. We split everything between 3 people and with the rice, it was more than enough. Great place, just recommend getting reservations on OpenTable so you aren't rushed. read more

Had a fabulous evening tonight at Viceroy with a friend and it was my first time being here and we both loved our experience! The ambience was beautiful, the food was delicious, and the menu was extensive. Giving this review a 4 star due to the service we received and the quality of curry that my friend ordered. Our waiter really struggled to accommodate my friend's dairy intolerance, and the curry we ordered was nothing to write home about (though the rest of what we ordered was delicious)! Having been down with hospital things this past month, it was nice to finally be allowed on a regular diet and so we went to The Viceroy for lunch. Pros: the food tast d pretty good. Masala chai although not the best I've had, was still very good tea. Came with Parle G which was a nice nostalgic throwback. I ordered the veg thali and got a potato-spinach curry and a dal mix. And a side salad of chickpea. The raita was too thick in my opinion. The yogurt needs thinning. It's close to some work places and downtown so it was quite packed. The cocktail menu looked good! Cons : The service was real slow. Maybe it was just a few people managing the place today but it was slow. When requested for extra naan for the thali, it was denied even though we were ready to pay for it. The ambience is wrong. It's too colonialistic and seems to glorify that when it really should not and should do more to stay away from it. TLDR- Wrong ambience. Reasonably good tasting food. I absolutely loved my dinner at the Viceroy. It was some of the tastiest, most flavorful Indian food I've had. The service was excellent, and the food was reasonably priced for the huge portion sizes. The fusion Indian food served here is a combination of Indian and British pub food done very well. We started the meal with the bhaji chaat, which is an absolute must order. It's fried vegetable fritters covered in a delicious chickpea masala. The chaat was so flavorful and completed the crispy fritters perfectly. For my entree, I had the London Mixed grill, and it was awesome! The amount of tender, delicious grilled meat was crazy and enough for two meals. There were at least 5-6 pieces of chicken tikka and chicken Haryali, all of which were juicy and tender with great spices coated in the surface. My favorite was the lamb, which was the most tender and flavorful out of the meats. The shrimp were huge as well and covered in a great Tandoori spice. Basically, if you want a huge amount of deliciously seasoned chicken, lamb, and shrimp, this entree is a must order. I'd been planning to come here for a while but out of the blue my dad wanted to visit along with my mom! Quite a surprise since she is known for disliking Indian food. Maybe I should come back on my own since I wasn't very impressed by the food, although the waiter service was good. We had a nice time with some weird cocktails and a very good fried appetizer of some sort. But if every dish is just stuff on rice, I'll make that on my own at home with Patak's sauce! Maybe I was foolish to order the thing on the chalkboard, which was something with pork. That's a bit weird for an Indian restaurant, but maybe not for an Indian restaurant in North Carolina! Unfortunately it was pretty dry. My dad seemed pleased with lamb and my mom with a sort of Indian shephard's pie. Best contemporary Indian/thai food in Durham! The dishes were innovative and delicious. The meat was so good!!!! As was the red thai curry veggie dish. We luckily got to seat and have an early dinner without reservation. Will definitely make one next time. Cannot wait to try more of the menu. Let me start by saying I'm older. I also drink a mix of apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, and cayenne pepper every day (hey it works), so I think all of these things have changed my palate. Take all of these things how you wish. My approximately $40.00 meal was ok. I had the Paneer or Murg Mykanwala. I also tried the London Mixed Broil, Jeera wings, a chow main item ‍, the special of the day goat meal, the special of the day goat appetizer, and the tamarind margarita. Wow! In my humble opinion, the tamarind margarita and the jeera wings were the star of the show. My Mykanwala dish was too sweet for my personal palate. Everything else was ok. I so enjoyed my dinner experience at the Viceroy on Friday night. It has atmosphere, friendly wait staff, friendly managers (Nick) and the food was very delicious. I had the Bhaji and added the Chaat, the Maharajah Kabobs, and my companion had the Sarsin Ka Saag and the Kabobs. When I tell you, that all of this was on a deliciousness scale of immeasurable degrees.... I'm not sure I'm doing it justice. My friend said it just like what he remembers from his time in England. I could take it or leave it...literally walking by headed to my Tapas spot and decided to experiment..AFTER reading a few yelp reviews. Monday night , at bar and I feel like they need two people to staff the bar. This guy is working hard! Who brings out an appetizer with the main course? Is that really acceptable at this price point for Indian food that I could get in the mall? The bartender as well as dude in the suit never acknowledged me as a first time visitor or asked how the meal or experience was---who does that??? We had an amazing date night at Viceroy! The atmosphere is perfect for a date or meeting up with friends and family who enjoy great Indian food. They have lots of dishes that are easy to share and it is the best way to experience all of the flavors. We also had really great service throughout the night and I can't wait to go back. After looking at the reviews on yelp, we decided that we wanted to share the Bhaji with Chaat appetizer. This appetizer is a plate of onion and kale fritters, topped with chick pea masala, tomato onion yogurt and chutney. Our server asked what heat level we would like for it and we went with a 3 out of 5 spice level. The 3 spice level was also perfect for us. It was just spicy enough and wasn't so overwhelming that we couldn't enjoy the flavors of the dish. I thought that the yogurt sauce really helped balance the dish and I would hands down order it again. For my main dish, I had the Paneer Mykanwala - which was a creamy tomato stew with paneer in it. And it also came with a side of rice. There was lots of paneer in the tomato stew and the broth was soooooooo good! I also ordered this dish with 3 out of 5 for spice, which was yet again perfect for me. And we couldn't have an Indian meal without some naan to go with it. We ordered the garlic naan, which came with 6 pieces. I loved dipping it into my dish. I also tried some of my husband's London mix grill. All the meat was really good, especially the lamb. It was lots of food for a great price! My husband almost never has leftovers and he didn't even come close to finishing all of his food. If you're looking for a lively and exciting place to celebrate a special occasion, have a night out with friends or a date night, this place is 100 percent it. We went for a birthday at 7:30 pm on a Monday night. It was packed but not overly crowded. They did a really great job seating our party of 8. Their booth was comfortable for all of us. The food: delicious and so flavorful. I don't think there's anything on this menu that you can order and it not taste fantastic. Even the salad had a unique freshness to it. They ask you to rate spice level between 1-6. We said a 3. My face was on fire when I ate those wings. I am Middle Eastern too so I am used to a lot of spice in my food. This was extra. The 3 felt like a 4 or a 5. Be conservative with your spice level. The ambiance was awesome, our waitress was nice and attentive. We never had a shortage of water (they put pitchers on the table). Wanted to provide a quick review in the middle of lockdown. 1. Incredibly kind and attentive service when ordering via the phone. 2. Were met as we pulled up at the door and provided our food. 3. Everything was absolutely delicious. Baingan Bharta: Favorite dish. I order this often and this was standout. Definitely beyond the normal complexity. Jeera Wings: A cool fusion, with really solid flavor. Came with sautéed celery which was an interesting twist. Garlic Naan: Very good. Dal: This was the only dish that I wouldn't order again. Stepping into this place for our Saturday night reservation, I simply loved the vibe. I couldn't take my eyes off the wall....I stood there wondering how they managed to collect these antique pictures. While I was time traveling...My husband whispered into my ears that our reservation was taken by someone who kind of stole our identity. Hmmm....The management seem to be as surprised as we were. We were offered a complimentary Appetizer and then our first round of drinks were on the house as well. Now that was a nice gesture. The table we finally got was perfect...A cozy corner right next to the portrait of Taj Mahal. Once settled, we got the much hyped Gobi sukka. Having eaten a zillion versions of this...I liked it but wish it was lightly battered. It was very similar to our baaji with the chaat. Next we had the kebab platter, which was perfectly done. The meat was marinated so well and the spice level was just right The cons were definitely the drinks and desserts. The drunken Shirley was a great disappointment but the cina pumpkin Toddy made up for it. We so badly wanted to finish our meal on a sweet note but the pumpkin roll and carrot cake wasn't inviting. I wish they served Indian fusion desserts. Great addition to the area...Just a few tweaks and I'm sure they'll receive more love. read more

Food is very good, has great depth of spices. Menu is limited. No veggies with protein offerings--disappointing about that. Service is good to fair-- very busy on Friday evening. Waitress was very accommodating and helpful, knowledgeable about the dishes offered and very customer service oriented. Ambiance-- extremely noisy, bar atmosphere, full of young people, urban scene-- not at all good for a quiet, intimate dinner. Could barely hear ourselves talk. In addition to the noise level of this crowded restaurant, there was loud annoying thumping music in the restaurant.
