Ever walk into a venue - whether it be a gallery, a coffee shop, a furniture store, I don't know…read more.. a dental office - and think to yourself in punctuated emphatic-ness: "I. Want. To. Live. Here."? Well let me fill you in on some good news: you *can* live (or at least stay, depending on your budget) at The Blackman. Not only is it exceptionally easy on the eyes, but it also has all of the amenities of a home-away-from-home. No joke, the mini-kitchen, patio, shower, balcony, TV, bookshelf, work space and bed even made me quiver with amenity-envy. I especially loved spotting the Alice In Wonderland touches around the hotel - from the 'Eat Me' magnets on the mini fridge to the small mirrored bunnies along the hallways and of course the Richmond prints on every wall. The entire theme was exceptionally well pulled-off. Though outside of Melbourne's CBD, the location is well connected by tram and the two restaurants downstairs (Classico and Fleur) along with the 24-hour room service menu and in room kitchen leave you little to want. My only star-altering request would be free in-room wifi. But overall, this is an exceptional accommodation and I would recommend it for both swank staycation get-aways and corporate travel alike. You can't help but feel stylish rocking up to a spot like this.

The (first world) problem with a room this comfortable is that you want to spend lots of time in it rather than being out and about with your work colleague. Still, it makes coming back to a hotel room at night less sterile and more like coming home. I tried hard, as I drafted this review, to think about what it is exactly that makes an Art Series hotel experience so exceptional and five star. The only thing I could come up with was: they do the basics so well and with such grace that the rest takes care of itself. Their beds are some of the best I've slept on in hotels. What is usually a restless nights rest for me in other hotels is a sound and rejuvenating sleep here. The room is dark enough at night to actually sleep. There's little to no outside noise or noise from other rooms. There's beautiful Australian art work surrounding you. There's EVO products in the bathroom. Want me to go on? Suffice to say, I think I've found a place that feels like a home away from home.

For such unhygienic conditions, the hotel only offered a one-night refund. This is unacceptable and does not reflect the protocols or service expected from a 5-star property.

During my first stay, I ended up booking what was sold as a two bedroom room. It turned out to be a room that was just divided by curtains. It was also a a room facing commercial Rd which also happens to be the home to a thumping night club that went all night for numerous nights. I couldn't sleep! I was told there was nothing they could do for me and they couldn't give me an alternative room. Suck it up buttercup! On this stay I checked in on a Saturday and immediately reported that my TV doesn't work. Nothing was done to fix it. Tonight (Monday) I wanted to watch the final day of the ashes cricket. I got to my room hoping they'd finally fixed my tv. Nope, they couldn't give a sh1t it seems. I had to go down to reception to plead for them to fix it, because the phone system doesn't work either. Rose on reception basically said, Yeah...... I know, other people have complained as well. I said ok, but fix it. Rose said, nah, theirs nothing I can do, not my responsibility. That's it! Nada, who cares, it's done, thanks for staying. This place is just poorly run. Don't stay here! Spend your money somewhere that they care and deserve your hard earned.

Luckily they do hospitality better then arithmetic and the St. Kilda location is no exception. This boutique budget hotel is located one street back from Acland street and the esplanade, and here lies both the reason for staying here and the reason to not. The location cannot be beaten in St Kilda. Your minutes away restaurant, bars, shops, transport and the beach. This is fantastic obviously! The trouble is if your allocated a front facing room, it may get a bit loud at night, all night(mostly due to the popular backpackers across the road.) The hotel rate includes parking which is a godsend in St Kilda. The service here was fantastic, the check-in process was one of the fastest and smoothest I have experienced and upon requesting an Internet cable they had it ready when I popped down to reception, I didn't even have to ask for it! The room itself was furnished with chairs that look like art pieces but are actually very uncomfortable to sit in and the bed was soft. The LCD flat screen on the wall was great, as was the large desk area in the Deluxe King. The rooms themselves are standard. great value to a budget hotel but missing polish for a boutique offering. The bathroom wasn't memorable, although I was let down by the lack of bathtub. For some reason I like to have the option of a bath while in a hotel, though rarely use it! The included Continental breakfast was standard hotel fare but in a great cafe/bar area which improved the experience.
