Back then I probably thought "bloody hell this is expensive" and left to get a cheap 6 pack of beers somewhere else. How times have changed! These days I would rather buy 3 expensive nice beers than get 6 crappy bottles, so this time when I walked in last Saturday I was very very impressed. It seems to do a mixture of beers, wines and spirits, but focuses more on the first two. The range is very good and on the beers I noticed several interesting cans and bottles that I have never seen before. There were all sorts of obscure American breweries and also some better known ones like Rogue and Stone. I liked the fact they also seem to have lots of different beers from each brewery, rather than just the odd one. I can see myself making my way through a whole brand range to see what I like best. For those not into beer they had some crazy Rogue alco-pops drink that was bright pink and claimed to be donut vodka. Pricing looks on a par with Hippo and VG, so it can be expensive, but worth it in my opinion when you manage to search out that sweet hoppy IPA you have been looking for all your life. Cool wee shop. I will be back.

They have a massive selection of beers, spirits and wines that can cater to any need. Personally, I think the staff love a challenge, so go in and try my personal tip: say you have X amount to spend, and they're to find you a decent wine. They will never fail. I have walked away with a decent bottle of white wine on more than one occassion, for under £4-5. Score! Watch out though, as I think for a lot of the stuff, it can be quite pricey, however, imported specialities are never going to be cheap, so I can assume that you will expect to pay a bit more for the rarer species of beer/wine/spirits.

I'm so glad we did - this shop is a real hidden gem. We were warmly greeted and left to have a browse. The shop doesn't just have wine, they also stock Italian ingredients like pasta, sauce, biscuits, oils. I had a quick look at the wines on the shelves and then spied the taps behind the counter. The girl was really helpful and told me that the wines are £7 for the bottle and if you bring the bottle back for the refill then it's only £6.30. Winner! They also offer samples of the wines which I think is fab, as you can get a taste before you commit to buy. The wine isn't expensive anyway but sometimes it's nice to know what you're getting. I tried the fizzy rosé and the Pinot Grigio and then settled on the Traminer which was similar but had a cleaner, easy drinking taste. I really enjoyed this wine and would definitely return to sample some of their other offerings! They also have Aperol for around £15 a bottle. At another shop in Glasgow I paid close to £25 for a bottle. Excuse me while I cry in the corner about this. At least now I know where to get it for a good price!

Except that it only really sells wine, you can drink the wine in store at their tables and, aside from the many bottles that line the walls they have several wines "on tap." If you buy a bottle from them then when you've finished your wine you can return and have it re-filled from one of the barrels they currently have open. Naturally, you get a small discount for this. They also sell a few deli-type items, mostly things like speciality pastas and chocolates and I think you'd be hard pressed to find somewhere better to buy gifts for foodies. The store isn't huge but they do seem to pack in all kinds of delicious things. The three wines I've tried from them have all been delicious. My only complaint is that I have a bad habit of immediately forgetting which ones I've tried (might be an effect of the wine, of course). That's really my fault though. The staff are really great, they know their stuff and will guide any wine novice (i.e. me) to help them choose something they'll love.

I went in to buy a selection of ales for a gift; you can do a 'pick-and-mix' to suit your tastes, and I easily filled a six-pack with Scottish ales that I'd never even heard of. I now want to go back and do the same as a gift for myself! Not just beer either - the wine selection is pretty inspiring too. Incidentally, the name 'Valhalla's Goat' refers to the Norse legend of Heiðrún, a goat who stands on her hind legs in Valhalla eating the leaves of the tree Lærað. From her udders flow the finest mead that fill a cauldron so large that all can drink from it. So now you don't have to look it up.... :-)

Whether you're after a wee snacky delicacy for a dinner starter (or dessert!), that essential but hard-to-find exotic ingredient that you simply must-have for a recipe, a designer beer or three, or even a quality malt whisky, Peckhams is the place that you're likely to find it. I usually visit here when my eye is caught by a fancy malt whisky in the window (cunningly displayed right beside their cash machine, the cads!), or when I'm seeking margaritas mix for what has become a Christmas cocktails tradition with us. The West End would be a poorer place without Peckhams. Long may they continue.

Then of course they have offers for coffee and cake, should you need anything else in between. As far as I'm concerned, this is what delis should be like. They would get five stars out of five too, but the service can be just a little bit on the slow side. I don't mean when they're struggling with the lunchtime rush because that's fair enough. I mean, it can take them a few minutes to realise that you haven't been served, and in serving you some things they can be very slow (don't bother getting butter on your roll in the morning, unless you've got plenty of time on your hands). It's easy to forgive them because they're friendly and helpful and because everything is delicious but if they were just a tiny bit more efficient Peckhams would be perfect.

They were a gift from my awesome boss - two stacked bottles of 250ml each, one of raspberry vodka and the other containing elderflower vodka, both bottles inscribed with "Kath's Cocktail Party", wrapped creatively in tissue and cellophane and tied with natural raffia - and that was me, caught hook, line and sinker by the wonderfulness that is Demijohn. Demijohn get their name from their selection of huge Demijohn bottles, massive big round bottles containing litre upon litre of luscious liqueurs...The shop itself isn't large but that doesn't mean lack of choice...I usually lose an hour of my day easily when I go in there and every time end up doing eeny-meeny-miny-mo to make my choice lol. They offer vodkas, gins (Seville orange a favourite of mine, oh and blackcurrant (it tastes like grown-up Ribena!)), whisky's and even oils and vinegars (though I don't tend to look at that side of the shop ;-) ) so there really is something for everyone. The best thing is, you can try before you buy so make sure you go without a car! There is a variety of different sized bottles to choose from (these are priced separately to the liqueurs but once bought, you can bring your empties back time and time again to refill and only pay for the liqueur!), some which stack on top of each other, some which lock side by side so if you can't decide on just one liqueur then this is the way to go! I always think contrasting colours look best, just saying... Bottles can then be inscribed with a personal message making them a gorgeous gift idea for birthdays, weddings, dinners, actually do you even need a reason!? Oh and one last thing, don't go diluting them with tonic et al, neat over ice is by far the best way to enjoy these beauties :-D

Normally I get a bit too overwhelmed, look around for a few seconds and then leave again. Not this time though! If you're not sure what Demijohn is all about, it's a shop which sells some lovely spirits, oils, vinegars as well as jam and chutney. I was in looking for a gift for friends for a housewarming and the customer service was great - the guy talked me through what is popular just now (Seville gin!) and suggested a nice gift rack with three mid-sized gins (the Apotheker 200ml rack). They'll even do a custom message on the bottles if you like. Sure, it's a little pricey but a great place to buy a gift for yourself or someone else. Well worth a visit. I believe they'll also let you have some samples although I wasn't offered any on this visit (sad times).

G G Brothers has been on Argyle Street for as long as I can remember and it's always been a good place to pick up a bargain. If all your after is a cheap four pack of beer, or a bog-standard bottle of vodka, this place has got you covered. If you want something a little fancier, keep an eye on the offers they have advertised in their window, or look elsewhere. If it's basic it's cheap; if it's fancy and on offer it's cheap; if it's fancy but not on offer, you'll pay over the odds for it. Keep that rule of thumb in mind and you won't go far wrong.
