So, a trip to Amish country and then a side trip to the Warther Museum was the ticket. Earnest Warther was a master carver and he carved a wide array of amazing carvings - mostly of trains. The detail in his carvings is incredible. Warther was sel-taught and he actually made some of his own knives because he could not find what he needed in the stores. His craving and craftmanship is amazing. This is a MUST-SEE attraction in the Dover/New Philadelpha area. Allow at least 2 hours (longer if you have time) to thoroughly enjoy this museum.

Varied pieces celebrating the ends of many famous persons. A rosette from the bunting on Lincoln's funeral train, invitations to memorial services for many famous people. A hand organ played as funeral music for Franklin Roosevelt. So many items to see. All tastefully displayed throughout a currently working funeral home. The museum is free to the public but you are welcome to make a donation if you would like. Donations are forwarded to local charities. The museum began as an autograph collection but when someone included a funeral notice with the autograph, (Joe Louis), Famous Endings resulted.

The museum is full of beautifully curated, cordoned-off room displays: a kitchen and dining area, a cheese-making room, wood-working room, print shop, iron-working room, and even a fire station equipment room. Press a button, and you are instantly immersed in an audio explanation while overhead lights highlight each piece. It's a clever, engaging way to learn. One of my favorite spaces was the music room complete with Al Ho. There were also glass cabinets, showcasing clothing, worn by Sugarcreek residence over the years, a thoughtful touch that brings local history to life. I also learned how deeply Sugarcreek is tied to brick making, thanks to its rich clay and shale deposits. The first plant, the Finzer Brothers Clay Company, was eventually acquired by The Belden Brick Company in 1946. It's a fascinating part of the town's story. We had a great time, exploring all three levels and left with a real appreciation for the care and pride that went into this museum.

It was not crowded downtown Sugarcreek just yet, but it was about to be. I was welcomed by the friendliest staff who briefly explained the lay out and I was on my way. Lots of cool antiques and history of Sugarcreek and a lot about both the Swiss and Amish heritage of the area. It is an old building with creaking floors (which adds to the charm!) so when you are downstairs you can hear the people walking above you. There is a very small gift shop up front and I didn't buy anything, but there were a few cute souvenir trinkets. I can't wait to come back and bring my son.

This is the first museum that I can recall which honors the contributions from the home front. Dennison Depot was a stop for these soldiers on the way to the front and the town went out of their way to ensure they were supported, serving up thousands of gallons of coffee and millions of cookies and so much more. The museum itself is a series of railroad cars that have been recovered and restored. As you walk through the cars, there are signs and captions that show the history, explain the memorabilia and more. Friendly folks who were happy to have a visitor this morning. This was someone's retirement project. I watched a video on YouTube about a 105 year old man, his advice was to have a purpose in retirement. Only open one day a week, the museum has two sets of buildings containing a number of their rolling stock and another group of rolling stock exposed to the elements. I totally enjoyed talking about our experiences visiting other rail museums in the country. In the future, the museum hopes to run a track with a live overhead wire and one can see the work in progress. Each of the housed rolling stock has a placard with all the information a railfan could want. The museum is free and one is given a personal tour with a member.

I thoroughly enjoyed the beautifully restored home of the Reeves Family and the paranormal perspective of the home. The docent was fairly new, but she was knowledgeable and interesting. She focused not just on the family and the unexplained, but also on Victorian death rituals and such. The dark, quiet ambiance really did lend itself to the charm and spooky atmosphere of the tour. The carriage house is where you start the tour and is pretty impressive in its own right. I may have found that even more spectacular than the house itself. It is really all just so lovely. Do yourself a favor and make a point of visiting this beautiful Tuscarawas County treasure.
