The pastor seems a little narcissistic. But some of the people there were nice to me.

Lovely services in a historic church with beautiful architectural details in Newark, California!…read moreThe worship service is outstanding with talented singers and musicians singing palpably spirit-filled hymns - some traditional & some more modern - but all very beautiful and incredibly uplifting. They have a testimony sharing time that opens our eyes to the powerful works and miracles God is still doing in the lives of His children even to today. The sermons are Biblically based with frequent Scripture read-alongs via overhead screens. Nothing beats the power of reading and hearing the Word itself!!! To pack all of this in, it takes about a couple of hours during Sunday Morning service. The pastors and congregation are very friendly. Although the morning service is fully in English, there is a Tagalog service in the afternoon. Being an English speaker, I've only attended the morning service. I strongly recommend visiting Living Hope church - where you can seek the Lord in Spirit and truth while watching the sunlight steam through historic stained glass windows, pondering God's majesty.

This congregation was small but comfy and homey. The first sermon I heard by Pastor Brian really cut at my heart and I knew it was the right place for me. The church has grown more since when I first attended, but it hasn't lost its community feel. The people there have really inspired me in my walk. In some churches it's easy to get lost or it might be hard to really connect with others. But at Home of Christ, you pretty much just go at your own pace. Everyone seems open-hearted, friendly and genuine. Deep, genuine friendships get built here, and as a newcomer I had been surprised how willing people were to go out of their way to help me and get to know me. The leaders of the church are both admirable and full of humility. While it's great to hang out and check out the scene, I think it's easy to want to get involved, extra hands are always appreciated. As a church 'alumnus' (I moved to LA a while ago), I think the one thing that really sets Home of Christ apart is that everyone, whether they notice it or not, really grow deeply. By that I mean they get to encounter Christ deeply, as if you got to know a really intimate friend, they've grown friendships deeply, the way you always thought friends should be, and through this you come to understand much more deeply about yourself. I really think relationships started here will last a lifetime. That sense of belonging and home never leaves any of us Home of Christ 'alumni'. We all try to visit and get plugged in whenever visiting the Bay Area. Great place to meet people, especially for young families. Be careful not to step on a crawling baby by accident! The youth group is also a really fun place for teens to grow and learn and make new friends. The youth come from all the local schools, so chances are good you'll meet someone you know or goes to your school. There's adult small groups as well, it's a good place to meet people and kind of inspiring to see how other people's lives have been changed by the gospel. The groups do have a stronger interest in social justice, so opportunities to serve or volunteer come up often and are a lot of fun to pitch in, meet people and do some good in the community. Anyways, really worth checking out. It's not a lot of bells and whistles, but the people are real, the faith is real, and you can't but help feel inspired and think... yeah, I can tell... God works in this place.

I found this church through a web engine search, and when we started going we fell in love with it…read more Why? 1) The preaching! Faithful to the Word; unapologetic truth that points us to the compassion and mercy we have received. All sermons (from old and New Testament) show how Jesus' sufficient job on the cross is the a-z of the Bible (and really the core of life ). 2) The people! A group of people that know they are broken, don't pretend, and are there for you when you fall and are in the dumps. They eat with you, pray with you, cry with you, mourn with you, are goofy with you, admonish you, encourage you, and plainly walk through life with you. We left the church when we had to move to another country, but I wouldn't have left otherwise! Miss my New Life family!!! But the Lord is always faithful and I have a new church family in Canada now If you're on the fence about checking it out, don't be! Just go! Try it out a few times and then decide. You don't need to be a Christian. If you're a Muslim, a atheist, an agnostic, a Hindu, whatever you wanna call it, but you wanna find out more about Jesus or Christianity, you're welcome there!

Reposting my old review from 2012 since we've moved and had to create a new Yelp page. Since then…read morethe church has been growing rapidly under God's provision, and we are now at a new location with more space! We now also have an assistant pastor, Rich, who's been such a blessing to New Life. Since Rich's arrival, we've witnessed a huge growth in young adults ministry. - Though I'm sure people will only write good stuff about their own church, I want to first let you all know that I am going to be as unbiased as possible in the following review. I found New Life back in April through a pastor I'd met in Palo Alto. I had just moved back home from New York, and while looking for a church to settle in, the pastor suggested this church that is fairly new in my neighborhood. Since it was a pastor I trusted, I decided to give it a try. It couldn't hurt - it was only a few minutes from my house! Though I was at a very confusing stage in my life when I first started attending this church, I was able to settle in without feeling uncomfortable, thanks to the friendly, non-intimidating environment that is not too in-your-face. Seven months later, I am still attending the church. I have experienced a slow but visible growth in my faith, through the loving and supportive community, as well as Pastor Dave's sermons which are always on-point. The vibe of the community is very fun, friendly, yet intimate. Pastor Dave's sermons are intellectual and witty, but never straying away from the very core of the gospel. Though it is a fairly small church, there is an order that cannot be ignored. I believe this is a reflection of the gospel-centeredness of the church. This allows the church members to be accountable and supportive towards one another. What I love the most about NLMC is how welcoming and accepting everyone is towards newcomers who are still questioning their faith or have never even been to church. I have been to churches where there's the "inner circle" of people who grew up in that church their whole lives, but this church does not question or judge your faith; instead they provide you with some insights and guidance to understanding Christ. The congregation is mostly young married couples or young parents, but there still is a younger single crowd. The church vibe is still very young, and the church is very responsive to the younger crowd, so it'd be nice to see it grow more. Anyways, I suggest everyone to check out the church just for two weeks. I know that everyone feels differently about different churches, but I am pretty confident this one will make you feel safe as a place to grow in your faith.

The fellowship time starts at 10:30 and gives folks a chance to have coffee and pastries and to talk with each other. The people there are friendly and the atmosphere is relaxed. First Presbyterian Church in Newark is family friendly and is for all ages and backgrounds. There is a children's church, small group bible studies, an Adult Sunday school, and many other programs available. You don't even need to know anything about Christianity to attend and get something out of the service. I'm glad I found this church and maybe you will too.
