She was also yelled at very aggressively by a grown man, the teacher assistant Mr.Joey on her second day, mind you she was 3 going on 4 at the time and it was her first time being away from her parents, HE needs to be fired and investigated because he's a very aggressive person, i witnessed him yelling at kids and I also saw him on the cameras pulling kids by the arm he should NOT be around kids, I let this incident go and try to give the school a second change, but things got worst, they change teachers about 3 times or more, there's no structure, the kids are out of control, there's VERY poor sanitation, expect your kid to be sick on the daily basis, because THEY DO NOT CARE TO KEEP A CLEAN SANITIZE AREA for the kids. Two months into this journey, I'm so impressed by the breadth of experiences and knowledge the children at this school are exposed to, even the youngest among them. Every day, his wonderful teacher Ms. Stephanie, and her assistant Ms. Kris, send home a small slip that tells us what he "worked" on that day. What we see as play often times is work for these little humans we live with because they're working on developing skills. Imagine my surprise when I found out they were doing food tastings from the Toddler Garden, learning how to slice bananas, and working on practical life skills such as self-care. Our son, now 20-months-old will independently carry his bowl or plate to our kitchen sink, throw away garbage and help us sort recyclables, assist with pick up his dirty laundry or put away books, etc. Did I mention this is my same child who wasn't walking independently at 17-months-old, and after one week surrounded by his peers he was doing laps around our kitchen table? He has gained so much independence and confidence in these two short months, and as a parent that makes me more confident than ever about our choice to entrust the staff at DHMC with development. They're not just looking at test scores and assessments, they truly do teach to the "whole child" as advocated by the Montessori curriculum. For almost $10K/year (latchkey/lunch/etc at additional cost), I'd expect something much better. First, the school building needs renovation. It looks old, it smells old. My daughter uses the Montessori method fior leaning which seems to be working really well with her. Her reading skills at 1st grade was equivalent to 3rd grade... definetely the school methodology has something to do. But the materials are also very old... The staff is nice. What is really disturbing is that there is lots of school fund raising activities going on almost every month! And yet, the school is considered a non-profitable organization... oh well, go figure. Sometimes I actually wonder if the finances are mis-managed, because the gardens and the play area needs serious maintenance... as a matter of fact it is my biggest gripe for this school... it needs a serious face lifting but management is doing who knows what with the money... maybe I'm sponsoring 2 kids with tuiton I pay in full... who knows ...

We believed we were in the right place -- until her mental health began to decline and the school failed to act. In January 2025, her grades dropped noticeably, and her pediatrician, counselor, and prior neuropsychologist all recommended accommodations to support her suspected autism and rapidly progressing anxiety. These recommendations were brought directly to the Head of School and her teacher -- and were met with delay, deflection, and silence. Despite presenting medical documentation, past accommodations, and a collaborative proposal, no meaningful steps were taken -- not even acknowledgment. For months our daughter struggled through 5+ hours of homework per night, experienced escalating distress, and began exhibiting severe trichotillomania. We asked for urgent follow-up, confirmed her suffering, and even laid out specific accommodations recommended by her care team. The school's response? Vague reassurances, inaction, significant delays, and ultimately -- a statement that they were not resourced to help and we therefore were forced to withdraw her with 7 weeks left in the academic year. Her final days at Japhet were devastating for her and me as her parent. Staff completely ignored our emails. Her friends were never told she was leaving. She was sent home with hours of homework knowing it would never be graded and despite confirmed withdrawal due to mental health. There was no closure. No sense of RELIABILITY, HUMILITY, or RESPECT not for her as a learner, nor for us as a family. Japhet often speaks of its 18 character qualities -- initiative, courage, gratitude, justice, respect, reliability, joy, humility, peace, and more. But in our experience, these values were words on a wall, not principles in practice. When our child needed understanding, flexibility, and human connection, zero compassion was shown despite the fact that she was unraveling inside their very own walls. We share this to caution other families of neurodivergent children, especially those with autism +/- PDA profiles. If your child requires flexibility, emotional safety, accommodations or genuine partnership -- be prepared.
