Years ago I tried to convert my wife's family home movies myself by borrowing old movie projectors and using a camcorder, but the 1939/1940 16mm films were shredded in the projector and I refused to continue shredding the films, so we never saw them. The 1960-70s 8mm film quality was terrible recording from a screen. I tried again through another company about 10 years later and it was no better than my own efforts. We didn't even attempt the 16mm shredded movies. Now with parents and siblings in declining health/age and the films in deteriorating condition I felt that we really only have one shot left at doing this right. I did a Google search hoping some company could do a decent job and found Video Conversion Experts (VCE). The website looked like what I was looking for - a company that strived for great outcomes. I had a lot of questions which Brad answered with additional insights I had not thought of. We sent VCE three shredded 16mm films and thirty-nine 8mm films covered in white mold. What we received back is truly amazing quality. Stunning. The entire family is ecstatic. We went with the 2k scan and 2k ProRes and HD-AVI output along with all restoration services. Since receiving the digital movies I used VLC (free software) to screen capture thousands of still images. Using a ROKU device I stream the 2k movies to my 65 inch TV and we are really impressed with how great these look. Color is amazing, and the grain is gone. I think the best part is seeing the excitement with my mother-in-law as she sees her parents when they were 24 years old, as well as watching my wife and her brothers literally grow up in these movies is great. It's like a Time Machine. We have watched the movies about 5 times now, but we found that slowing them down or reversing them that we catch a lot of things we missed the first time. A family member recently send us a DVD she had made somewhere that was converted into AVI format from old Super 8 movie film. We were excited to receive it, since it's been over 45 years since we were married and we had no idea anyone had filmed parts of the wedding. The unfortunate part of that story is that the quality of the movie transfer was terrible! I have a fair knowledge of video editing, etc. and after ripping the video from the DVD, went to work. I tried everything at my disposal.... but the results were more than disappointing. The initial segment of the video had that terrible blue, overexposed look and the balance of the footage was terribly underexposed.... to the point where faces were mere silhouettes and couldn't even be recognized. It was obvious that not only was the Super 8 film suffering from 45 years of aging.... but because the wedding was held outdoors, in the evening, the photographer either lacked experience or his camera was less than adequate... or both. Because of the sentimental value of the film.... I decided to see if there was any hope of recovering these precious moments in our lives. That's when I came across VCE. After reading other reviews and considering other companies.... I decided to send the film to VCE for conversion. My only, simple request was to correct color, brightness and contrast as best as possible. The results were far better than I ever would have expected. The color corrections were excellent and contrast and brightness was such that all of the people in the wedding party were not just recognizable, but clear and bright. It is evident from the VCE results that the previous DVD transfer had been done by automated machine with zero personal attention. The service I received from Brad was excellent.... the turnaround time was short.... and the price was reasonable! What a fabulous business where memories can be restored and cherished for their customers!!! I had my Daddy's old 8 mm film from 1963 and 1964 restored. After my parents died, I had old boxes of film and no way to view the contents. Although Daddy wasn't the best photographer and his movies weren't perfect, the folks at Video Conversion Experts combined the old reels and made a flash drive that enables me to once again see my parents as young vibrant people going about enjoying vacations in Ireland and at the beach and the fun we shared as a family. Brad and the team at Video Conversion Experts did an outstanding job in transferring my 40+ year old super 8 films. The special care and attention to detail totally exceeded my expectations. I have super 8 films with magnetic sound tracks that were originally recorded at different camera speeds (18 & 24 fps). All was transferred at the correct speeds. This is an attention to detail that I'm sure would go undetected by using a "drug store" conversion service. The 2K transfers yielded an image quality that I believe matches or exceeds that of the original film elements. Projected on a 10 foot screen, the images still appear sharp. The service was fast and I was provided with 'before and after' frame captures to help me decide how much correction to utilize before the project was finalized. We've used Video Conversion Experts twice for converting our home movies to digital. Our son is in the video business and selected VCE from their website after seeing their depth of services and the control we could have when selecting exactly what we wanted. Our most recent order contained 8mm films that were up to 70 years old. We were afraid that much of the film had become too dark to see, but we were amazed at the quality that we received on the digital file. The ordering process was smooth, we were notified when the order was received and shipped, and delivery was as promised. As for customer service, when our computer had a problem copying the last 5 minutes of the file, we contacted Brad and he immediately sent those 5 minutes from their backup file. I had 7 reels of 16mm film from 1947- 1964 digitized. I had never done this before and as the process isn't inexpensive I called for information and some hand holding. My point of contact, Brad Hinkle, was exceptionally helpful and very professional. He answered all my questions and guided me through the processing/product selection. He saved me some money by suggesting that certain options were probably not necessary and also suggested I might consider others that that turned out to be worthwhile. The end products I selected; both BluRay and .avi are better than I expected from 67 year old films. I just never expected them to be a clear and crisp as they are. You just never know how things are going to turn out. After much reading about converting 8mm film, I decided to contact Video Conversion Experts. I spoke with Brad and he walked me through the process of restoring the 8mm film and slides that I wanted digitized. I found Video Conversion Experts (a.k.a. Film Transfer Co.) through an on-line search. I had them convert 9 rolls of Kodacolor 16mm silent films that were taken in 1974-75 in Johannesburg, RSA and Victoria Falls (then Rhodesia). VCE did a superb job of transferring the films to DVD and digital storage media. As a retired video/audio professional I can easily recommend this fine firm and the quality of their work. Sent them 550 feet of 38 yr old Super 8 Film for Conversion. Had this done 10 yrs ago by a local outfit and the digital came out with horrible resolution with streaks and blurry. Video Conversion Experts did a Frame by Frame scan of the film in 4k (A little overkill on my part but wanted the best). They cleaned the film, scanned and filtered it and put it in an MP4 4k file on a thumb drive. Total turnaround time was 2 wks. The digital file is amazing - as good as the original Super 8! VCE converted several original reels of b&w 16mm movies that were about 75 years old. They did a beautiful job of converting the movies to a digital format and then transferring them to a flash drive and also DVDs. Considering how poor the quality of the originals were, the final product had excellent clarity and was easy to view both on my computer and on my TV via a DVD player. We had 40 yr old super 8 movies converted by VCE using the premium SD method with grain elimination. Excellent restoration. Finally able to enjoy family movies from when the kids were kids. Amazed at the clarity which was often better than original ever was. Be sure to opt for the grain reduction - it made a big difference. Brad and the rest of the crew did a great job. The restoration was of never before seen combat footage from Iwo Jima. The 16mm film stock was 70 years old so this would be the last chance to save it. I sent in a dozen reels of family movies from the 1950s through 1960s. You can find cheaper places, but you will get what you pay for.
