Pho is my favorite food. It's comforting, it's filling; it's like happiness in a bowl. So I eat a lot of it, and I grew up eating here with my grandmother. Then I moved to LA. I've eaten every pho in Los Angeles. It's fine. It's doesn't move me, but it does the job. After a decade, I come back to Costa Mesa and eat at Vietnam's Pearl. MIND BLOWING. Like there isn't a single pho place in all of Los Angeles that can hold a damn candle to Vietnam's Pearl. It's literally the most perfect bowl of soup. Flavorful, rich, complex, literally huge; unchanged perfection over the last 40 years+. Even my sister, who does not like pho, was like holy crap this is amazing. I bought a bowl of rare pho and beef balls to take home. 2/But when I got home, I opened it and saw that there was no rare beef, only 1 1/2 small beef balls (But the quality of the beef balls was very bad, all borax). The broth, which is the core of pho, was very bad, the accompanying vegetables were very little. 3/The restaurant owner and chef SHOULD LEARN HOW TO COOK from famous restaurants in the area: How to cook, quality and how to prepare take-out dishes. 4/DON'T be greedy for money. We came for dinner on a weeknight, right around 7pm and it was not busy. Seemed understaffed, took a while to get even acknowledged, get seated, and get menus. Once we got the menus, we had to flag our server just to order. It has an okay vibe to the place, not bad, but not as lively and friendly as other places we've been. About 10 minutes later, we finally got to place our order, which felt like an eternity. Considering we were one of only a couple customers, the customer service was disappointing. I felt like I needed to get up every 5-10 minutes just to get something, to order, ask for chopsticks or bowls, or get the check. Normally, a server would come once or twice to check on us, not here. The food was fine, we got lemongrass chicken and rare beef pho, prices were reasonable, not as much as we've gotten at other pho places, but it's also not as expensive either. That's the one redeeming quality of this place, which keeps the rating higher, but would have appreciated better service, which took off one star. read more

Craving pho but in these gas prices limited my distance. This establishment was very clean and the lady's kind and friendly, its a small mom and pops shop ( only 2 people working on a friday afternoon) ,but has enough space to accomodate a decent amount of people. It seems like a diverse population come through to eat here- which I do want to note please don't hit on your service staff or at least be discreet about it ( just leave your number with the tip). It's their job to be nice and doesn't equal they're interested with you. Mainly noticed how clean the restaraunt was. The pho prices were around 11-13$ so pretty standard. The combo had shank, rare beef and meatballs ( not the usual mix of entrails). I do think it is more on the cooked than rare side, but probably due to catering to a different crowd. The broth seasoning is also more on the seasoning sauce side. Overall, I was satisfied. The restaraunt was very chill and felt relaxing. Their spring rolls looked nice and were packaged tightly, so I hope to try it next time! Fit for casual lunches, probably pairs or smaller crowds. read more

My boyfriend and I were craving pho the other night and decided to check out somewhere local rather than drive into Garden Grove. We shared egg rolls to start and then each got a small order of pho. Honestly, we were pleasantly surprised at how great everything tasted! The broth was perfect, and there was a good amount meat and noodles in the small. If you're super hungry, I'd recommend sizing up. My one complaint is that service is a little slow. It's a small restaurant with a decent number of phone orders and walk-ins, so just be aware. We ordered in Vietnamese, but she spoke back to us in English, and was short with us, while she was much sweeter to the caucasians next to us. She gave us 4 super dirty forks, and when we asked for new ones, She exclaimed, "They're dirty?! They weren't dirty when I brought them out." WHY WOULD YOU SAY THAT? Just say, "Oh Sorry! Didn't notice they were dirty. Let me get you some clean ones." Instead she pretty much accused us of dirtying her forks with chucks of food that we hadn't even ordered yet. That left a bad taste in our mouth and the rest of our lunch was soured because of it. Food was fine. "large bowl" of pho is the same as a small bowl elsewhere. Won't be returning. Beef Pho for lunch.. Place is well decorated and clean, but the temp inside was bit warm even on a cool day. Pho came pretty fast. Lots of side, but for rare beef I was disappointed to see the beef served in the pho instead of the side. The problem with the beef inside is the rare thin slices cook very fast and by the time you eat the beef it's cooked very well and typically chewie. The broth was ok and a little thin. Lots of beef, but having it well ruined it. Only 1 size to choose from and the portion was on the small side. I've seen small sizes this size and at $15 a bow it's not cheap. Not bad, but I probably wouldn't go back for the pho based on the costs, portion and the fact that the beef was well. read more

I just had a grilled pork chop with shredded pork on rice and egg on top. This really hit the spot before heading back to LA. Ample parking in lot right in front of restaurant in strip mall. The owner's mom manages this location and she is the cutest boss lady running the entire show! I always find her running back and forth from the kitchen to the cashier to starting the food order in the back. I come here for good authentic Vietnamese food and this place never disappoints! The Pho is delicious, the broth tastes like mamas home cooking. You can tell there's a lot of love put into it. My other favorite dish is the SPECIAL Vermicelli which includes pork, shrimp & egg rolls. I LOVE the fact that she brings the fish sauce out in a glass oil dispenser cruet bottle. I am a very saucy girl so there's no amount of fish sauce that is enough for my noodles. I generously poured from the cruet onto my vermicelli plate and thoroughly enjoyed my lunch today. read more

My friend and I were in need of a comforting meal after a long night and tried out Vietnam's Pearl. We ordered the jalapeno lime crispy wings and the chef's pho to share. Wings were a little soggy from the lime juice but the flavor was good, not spicy unless you ate the jalapeno separately but would still recommend. This might be weird, but you can always tell when the oil has been "used" from the subtle smoky flavor and I personally love that. The pho was easily enough for both of us, lots of noodles and plenty of meat. They were not joking about the bone marrow - we mixed the fat with the broth... It gave me life. Very generous portions and such satisfying flavors. Service was fast and courteous. I think it might be the owner that was running the show - she is quick on her feet! Definitely recommend and will come again to try their other fare. read more
