Having said that though, the amenities, facilities, service, etc tend to be top notch at these hotels of course and this adds to the magical aspect of vacationing in this beautiful region. When researching where to stay we were mainly looking for a centrally located hotel with a pool and Grand Hotel La Favorita met this simple criteria. The hotel itself was on a great location, a few blocks away from the main strip, walking distance from all the main sites and just around the corner from the elevator that takes you to the lower level of the cliff from where you can walk to the port (this is important especially if you're using ferries as a mode of transportation). The decor of the hotel is beautiful and enchanting. They have lemon trees all around the ground floor and in the garden area. The furniture in the common areas is elegant and classic. Our room was very spacious, as was the bathroom, which had a tub (not separate from the shower). We didn't have a room with a view (we booked a classic double room) but honestly I'm not sure how much of a view other rooms have since there is a large hotel right in front of La Favorita which appears to block the views of the water. Perhaps the only rooms that I could see having a partial water view are the ones facing the side street (Via Tasso) and the ones on the top floors, but I'm not entirely sure. The room had a safe, complimentary sparkling and still water, coffee maker and coffee, robes and slippers as well as nice toiletries. We got delicious Baci chocolates left on our nightstands after each time the room was made up. They also had a pillow menu, from which you could literally pick the type of pillow of your choice depending on your preference (soft, medium, feathers, etc). I have never seen a pillow menu at a hotel before so I thought this was an interesting and fine detail, however I didn't really take advantage of it, I just kept the pillows that were already on the bed. The bed was pretty comfortable and the room had blinds which when closed kept the room pitch dark. The only two criticisms I have for this hotel are regarding the AC and the poor drainage in the bathtub. The AC really didn't work well and didn't cool the room much despite me trying to lower the temperature to 16C. Also, the water pooled in the tub as we showered and didn't drain completely until the water from the shower was completely turned off. and the poor drainage in the tub. We didn't actually complaint to anyone about this, not sure what if anything they could have done about it though. The main highlight of this hotel has to be their fantastic rooftop pool with great views of the city, the hills and the Vesuvius. We took advantage of using the pool every evening after we came back from exploring the towns. The water in the pool is cold and that was perfect to cool off from the intense heat. The bar and restaurant are also on the rooftop and although we did not have dinner there, we did enjoy a cocktail while watching the sunset. The rooftop pool was a perfect spot to relax and it was everything we were hoping for. Another great thing about this hotel was their fantastic breakfast served in a spacious dining area, on the balcony or out on the giardino. They had an amazing spread pastries, breads, cold and hot items, fruits, cereals, as well as an omelette station. Espresso drinks were made to order and to your liking (I always asked for my cappuccino to be made strong since I don't like them too milky). Service was impeccable. Overall we had a great stay and would definitely recommend this hotel if staying in Sorrento.

Best part of Sorrento is A39. This is a small (new) boutique hotel in the heart of the city. What should you expect staying here? Impeccable lodgings at a very reasonable price with a private chef in the morning for your free breakfast buffet. Best of all they have a Bluetooth speaker in each room for those of you who love some tunes during your travels. Interestingly this was the only hotel with this feature we stayed at during our 2.5 week trip through Greece and Italy.

It's a splurge, I know, but it was worth it for these reasons: (1) we saw more with our private guide than we would have if we were part of a big group because we weren't waiting around for people to follow, catch up, and get going; (2) we learned more about the places we saw because we weren't straining to hear or tuning out because we were in the back of the group; (3) we saw what we wanted to see and skipped what we didn't because the tour was, more or less, tailored for us. There are many tour guides that have great reviews so it was hard deciding which to go with, but I chose Tours of Sorrento because they had stellar ratings, Annalisa was responsive to my emails and requests, and she gave me a discount for booking more than one tour. In Sorrento, we signed up for the Capri Day Tour. We were picked up from our hotel and taken to the port by Antonio (more on him later), and we were met by our guide for the day, Luigi (who happened to be Antonio's brother). Luigi was fantastic: he was funny, knowledgeable, full of energy, and was totally invested in making sure we had a good time and learned a lot about the area at the same time. He knew all of the ins and outs of making sure we got to the sites like the Blue Grotto and Anacapri before the crowds, and that made a big difference: we felt like we got to see a lot without having to fight hundreds of people or wait in super long lines. By the time the island started to feel really crowded, we were already heading back to Sorrento. In Positano, we had signed up to do an Amalfi Coast tour by car, and we were pleasantly surprised to see Antonio as our driver/tour guide. He was calm, engaging, charismatic, and turned a long, rainy day into one of the best days of our vacation. He took us to the standard spots, but he also tailored it to what we wanted to see, combined with what the weather permitted. He was quick-thinking, told great personal stories mixed in with facts about the area, and he was always on time to pick us up (and was a great driver navigating the narrow, winding roads of the coast and the mountains). One of the best meals we had during our trip was at a restaurant that Antonio took us to, called Le Querce in Tramonti (see my separate review), and we would've never discovered it on our own. Just by getting to know us over a couple of hours, Antonio knew that we would appreciate this type of small out-of-the-way restaurant so much more than a more famous/touristy one. We had such a good tour that we cancelled a car service that we had already booked to take us back to Naples and we hired Antonio to do it instead. He also arranged for us to do a tour of Pompeii (something we didn't think we'd have time for), and we had another amazing guide there, Luisa. She was beautiful, funny, warm, and also knew so much and shared stories about herself as well as about history and the area. Antonio picked us up, and since we had some time before our train departed, we asked him to do a quick driving tour of Naples and when we were done, we felt like he wrapped up our time in southern Italy with a bow, like a gift. I still can't believe how lucky we were that all three guides we had were so terrific. They should all star in a tourism commercial about the area, not only because of the amount of knowledge they have but also because of their love and compassion for the land and its people. We had a wonderful time in Italy, and Luigi, Luisa, and Antonio are very much responsible for it.

We decided to allow house keeping to tidy our room a bit during one of the days. Unfortunately, we had euros, USD, and a US SIM card stolen from our room and we didn't notice until we were already at the airport. I don't take accusations lightly, but no way during our time in Italy have we even touched the bag that contained those "backup" items for emergencies, let alone our US SIM card (we've been using an EU SIM card). The hotel it self is very nice and beautiful, definitely a 4 star hotel. May this review be a warning to whomever is entrapped by the looks of this hotel.

Francesco was attentive and delightful at breakfast. Antonio was helpful and kind at any time. Maria runs a beautiful hotel complete with 16th century frescos on the ceilings of the dining area. And I would still be saying this whether or not the owner of the Villa saved my mom's life. My mother and I visited in April 2025 to plan my wedding at the hotel the following year. Life had other plans for us, as my mom had a medical emergency on the flight to Italy. Upon arrival she was ushered off the plane by paramedics, the ultrasounds and cat scans didn't reveal the real issue so her situation was chalked up to food poisoning. Medications helped ease the symptoms temporarily, but eventually her worsening condition triggered the hotel staff to coordinate medical care to come to the villa. They and the doctor coordinated a nurse to come twice a day for 5 days to issue IVs. All the while the staff was taking care of my mom, cooking her special meals, catering to our every need for 8 days. It was a burden they did not sign up for, but they rose to the occasion and acted as our personal assistants making sure my mom was comfortable and that I was emotionally tended to. Giovanni literally helped hang IVs with the nurses, alert me of doctor's and wedding appointment's arrivals, coordinate late night meals, and when I needed to leave at 4am to catch a ride to the hospital, Carlo made me a to go pack of snacks and sandwiches. They delivered my bags to the hospital so I didn't need to lug around two women's month worth of clothes all by myself. Leah and Francesca cried with me while I sat alone every day eating my meals as we hoped that my mom was on the mend. Roberto would bring us ice every few hours because it was soothing for my mom to suck on. When we thought my mom was on the mend, the owner of the villa took me for a boat ride and lunch to a beautiful seaside restaurant because he knew my trip had been absolutely abolished. And then when the symptoms came flooding back in after the treatment was over, he rushed to the hospital to advocate for us -- he got my mom transferred to a private clinic where a friend of his performed emergency surgery the next day to remove 2 feet of her small intestine from a blocked intestine. Salvatore drove me in his car rushing to follow the ambulance, stayed with us until midnight at the hospital to speak and translate with the surgeon, and then came back the next day to sit with me for a few hours when my mom got out of surgery so I wouldn't be alone. He called us daily to check in, had daily conversations with his friend, the surgeon, to relay our updates, and came back to visit a few times (over an hour away from his home). He quite literally saved my mom's life. The care she got there was far superior to anything had access to in the United States, we had views of the Gulf of Naples from the hospital room and a cot for me to sleep in. Looking back I am astonished by his kindness. We were in survival mode and he made sure to get us over the finish line. It brings tears to my eyes looking back at all he did for us, all the staff did for us. It was an absolutely horrific situation with the silver lining being that I experienced firsthand just how incredible this place and the staff really are. (My mom is fine now, by the way -- US doctors confirmed the surgeons did a fantastic job and that the Italian surgeons saved her life.) Aside from this horrific situation (that had nothing to do with the flight or with Italy), I had been emailing with Giovanni for 6 months leading up to our visit. I knew that this place was special from the get-go. Giovanni always gave prompt, thorough responses to my endless questions about the wedding and all those details. Upon arrival the hotel is exactly as I expected. Well appointed, spacious, mature and manicured grounds, beautiful views, authentic delicious cuisine, well located near the quant town of Sant'Agata that is void of many tourists, and close enough to all the Sorrento and Amalfi Coast has to offer. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone. It is a place that people will visit and never want to leave. It is quintessential warm Italian hospitality, the warm evening breeze on a satisfying summer's day. It is the first time coming home from a long trip to your mother's home cooked meal.

The five star Relais is what the locals call ancient 1892 (heritage is more like it) but is more like a contemporary mansion with historical elements and the suite we had was fantastic. It felt very much like home and still has its ancient roots which gave it its special charm. Situated at the top of the hill just a short 5 mins walk to the town center of San Agata, the Relais has the most amazing views of Mt. Vesuvius, Sorrento, Positano and Naples from the rooftop terrace. This is a perfect place for special occasions and you can book the entire Relais! It's also a very relaxing place to be with tennis course (grass) pool, hot tub, lounge areas inside and outdoors and a beautiful garden with maze! My husband and I stayed for a week not knowing what to expect and we were very very impressed! The staff is exceptional and friendly and five star means five star here for a reason. The cooking lessons were hands on to experience techniques and true Italian cooking and Chef Giuseppe and Chef Giovanni are excellent instructors and are very patient! Since this was a culinary vacation there was a good balance of cooking and sight seeing. We visited Amalfi Town, Positano, Ravello, Sorrento and even took the ferry to Capri (we paid for ferry costs and lunch here but well worth it)! Hosts Josie and Giovanni coordinated everything so we didn't have to worry about anything! The owner greeted us and was also very friendly as well as the very charming and kind Leah, one of our servers during our stay. Alessandro was also a server who is astute and both are excellent at catering to your needs. The property is huge and grow all their citrus, vegetables and herbs for cooking with when they are ready to harvest. Everything is organic and locally sourced. If you ever wanted to travel to the coast of Italy and learn to cook popular local dishes in a beautiful ancient mansion, you must stay here! While at the hotel, my son accidentally broke a lamp in his room. Rather than be gracious about the accident, the hotel manager berated him. My son understood he needed to pay for something he broke, but hoped to be treated with kindness, not hostility. The hotel charged him over $450 for the lamp and did not give him a receipt or proof of the lamp's value. Every attempt to get a receipt was stonewalled. Further, the hotel left the broken glass on the floor in the room for more than four hours before finally cleaning it up. The hotel's manager's behavior was not what I consider customer friendly and their inability to produce a receipt leaves the ordeal open to conjecture. I would advise going to another hotel and avoiding the Hotel Metropole in Sorrento Italy.

When we arrived we were greeted by a hostess who gave us some history about the restaurant and gave us a tour around the newly renovated property, their extensive wine cellar, sitting room and cooking school kitchen. Our visit so happened to coincide with their grand re-opening after a year and half of renovations. They also have rooms you can rent and one villa as well as enroll in cooking classes. During our meal one of the owners Salvatore came to our table and greeted us, as did Chef himself! We felt special and appreciated and they were truly genuine and happy to have us. The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated, with intimate areas and quiet spaces as well as larger open spaces for larger groups. Service was above and beyond and the food out of this world.
