But none have felt like home the way Hotel Goldener Hirsch does. The hospitality is exceptional. Warm, attentive and genuine. From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel not just welcomed, but cared for. Our room was beautifully appointed, with a view overlooking the Pferdeschwemme. It was comfortable in that rare way that makes you want to unpack, settle in and stay a while. Breakfast service delivered to our room each morning allowed us to ease into the day with quiet and comfort. In the evenings, we found ourselves at the hotel bar both before and after dinner, drawn in by the atmosphere and the incredibly welcoming bartender. I wish I had gotten his name. His professionalism, beautiful cocktails and way of making everyone feel like a regular added a layer of warmth that made those evenings feel special. I'm going to return. Hotel Goldener Hirsch is more than a luxury property. It's where we'll return, again and again, because it feels like coming home.

In 2000 it was rebranded and updated, renamed the Hotel Sacher. The color scheme is the same as the historic hotel in Vienna: lots of red and white. You can stop in here and have a slice of the famous Sacher torte. There are 120 rooms and it's a central hub for the Salzburg Festival.

Room itself is a decent size and I like that it has partial hardwood flooring, but the shower flooded half of the bathroom (after 5 minutes), there is no coffee/tea option in the room, the floor mats and curtains are dirty and damaged, and the walls are full of scuff marks. On the plus side the bed is comfortable and the window opens which is so nice. We paid about 400 Euros for our standard room which is definitely way too much for this hotel. Despite what they claim this is more of a 3 star property than a 5 star. Definitely won't return.

In attempt to reduce your reading attention, I'll just highlight some items already mentioned and some new ones. 1. Hotel has parking (underground beneath the hotel), so that's definitely a plus if you're driving in to town. With that being said, you'll have to pay for that parking. 2. Serves breakfast, but definitely not worth the price. I would definitely have breakfast somewhere else. 3. Quiet area, however, there's a strip club/brothel no more than 2 blocks down the street (if you're into that type of scene). As mentioned, it's a 15-20 minute walk to the city center, the river (where most of the activities are), and food. 3a. We did take a taxi that night from CityBeats (club across the river from the hotel) and it cost about 8 Euros for the both of us which was not bad at all. 4. Room was clean and maintained fairly well. It was also nice that we could open the windows for some ventilation and air. 5. The hotel does have an open bar during evening hours. I would stay here again if staying for a short period of time in Salzburg.

They helped us with taxi cabs and when our Tour bus didn't show up (reception called the tour group herself and slightly chastised them for forgetting us). Room: Bed had a beautiful glass lit headboard that was calming in the evening, mattress slightly firmer than I like but still fairly comfortable. There was a full panel of windows from ceiling to floor on one whole side of the room that opened up onto a balcony. Albeit, the view was nothing spectacular (neighborhood housing) but I loved that I could get fresh air by just opening up the doors. Room was very clean every day. Breakfast: We chose the non-breakfast option but were short on time one morning so bought the breakfast for 16 euros. It wasn't bad but not worth the price: hot scrambled eggs/sausage/bacon, assortment of breads, deli meats/cheeses, soft boiled eggs, some sweet pastries, yogurt, cereals, automated coffee machine. Location: Quiet, safe location about 15-20 minute quaint walk from them main city area. Some restaurants within 5-10 minutes. Die Weiss is a great brewery with authentic fare. 20 minute walk from train station.

The hotel is situated in the quad area directly in front of the train station. I would not consider staying at this hotel if you have a family with young children. If it's for business such as a one night stay, that's all I would consider it for. As far as the rooms, they are below average and basic. The bedding did feel clean and the bed was comfortable for my taste. The head pillows on the other hand are pretty much non existent upon laying your head down. So if you like tissue paper for a pillow you hit the jack pot. Television is not a smart TV and if you're English speaking only you get maybe two to three channels top. There are no movie channels. The shower does not contain any basic toiletry necessities and no wash cloths. The hallways appear to have not been cleaned in years and the doors and walls are thin and you can hear everyone walking and talking in the hallways. If you have a car, the parking fee is $18 a night. If you park your car and you leave to go run an errand, you have to pay every time you leave the parking garage. Kind of annoying. One positive thing, the young receptionists are friendly and helpful. I wouldn't have them work at night by themselves, as there are plenty of criminals and druggies just outside the doors congregating by the alley way. If you're open for a show, sit in the lobby and people watch through the hotel windows.

The explanation future guests need regards the unloading and parking part. There is no place to unload your car in front of the hotel. There is a side street immediately to the left of the entrance as you're sailing around the 'round about. Turn right there and you'll find 3-5 spaces on the right shoulder of the road depending upon how busy it is. Unload there and the staff will bring out a cart. The parking garage is 5 mins away by car (all one way streets, a bit of a maze), 10 minutes at least on foot, and is not easy to find. Look for the Hotel Imlauer sign on the wall, it's only about 6" x 6", so keep your eyes peeled. Once you're there, it all makes sense! Just hang in there! We do recommend Hotel Imlauer in Salzburg! The breakfast buffet was impressive, the staff at the buffet were very nice and helped me with gluten free options. The manager offered me packaged and heated gf bread and remembered me each morning after to give me more bread. The restaurant downstairs in the tavern was very busy on the night we went but squeezed us in. The hotel is very close distance to the Mirabell palace and garden, many shops and cafes. I enjoyed this hotel and would stay again if I make my way back to Salzburg.

It's also literally right next to the main Salzburg station and a decently-sized shopping center with a supermarket that has plenty of necessities if you are hankering to pick anything up. The beds here were very comfortable and the rooms were rather spacious for an European hotel. The views from the hotel were also rather lovely and it makes sense that the main restaurant is located on the top floor. The rooms were clean and the bathrooms were also just fine. The elevators were kind of slow but otherwise the entire experience itself was more than sufficient. My only beef was that the food in the hotel was just average at best. Don't expect a lot of choices or an exquisite culinary experience when dining here, but if you just want/need to eat something in the morning this place will do. The receptionists here were very kind and friendly.
