Galilee is ideal for those looking forward to a dip and cool themselves of the sweltering summer heat. The resort that started out as a 4 hectare park has now expanded into a 9 hectare haven of swimming pools. We decided to celebrate my nephew's birthday here a couple of years ago and were a bit anxious because it falls on May 1 which means hordes of people enjoying the national holiday. Yes, there were a lot of resort goers that day but the immense resort had no problem accomodating them all. There are a lot of cottages, dormitories, hotel rooms and function halls to ensure that everyone will have their own space. Don't worry if you have a lot of baons since they also provide carts that visitors can use to lug their belongings even to the farther corners of the resort. They also have several swimming pools so that none of them gets too crowded even if they have thousands of visitors. The only downside is that it will entail walking for a few minutes just to go to other pools. My advice is to just select a pool where you are most likely to spend most of your time and choose a cottage nearby. There are videoke machines for rent for those who want to practice their vocal prowess in between dips. I also saw some stalls offering hennah tattoo services. Groups who want to spend their team building can get one of their small private pools which also comes with private accomodations. They are not strict and will allow you to bring in your own food. If you are going to stay here during weekdays, the place is almost empty and you'll be under an illusion that you rented out the entire place.

Astrotel - A short-time hotel in Avenida that offers little in terms of amenities

Astrotel is a small hotel in Avenida that has a futurustic theme…read more It's actually more a motel than a hotel, but since there's no parking space whatsoever, it calls itself a hotel, one where couples can spend a few hours together for a small fee. I am one of the very few who can claim to have checked into this hotel by myself, which may seem weird but it's not. I was working in a newspaper in Intramuros up until last year when a typhoon hit Manila. The streets were flooded but I made it to the office anyway. Since the rains didn't stop, I had to spend the night at the office. The next day, the floods receded slightly, but I couldn't go home because I still had to work that next day. Since I was feeling tired and dirty, I decided to head for nearby Sta Cruz and check in to the nearest hotel that had a decent air-conditioned room with a hot shower. This is just about all that Astrotel has to offer. It was cheap back then, and remains so up to now. The rate these days is roughly P100 per hour although they do hand out discount cards for regular customers. One big downer about Astrotel is the lack of room service. This must be the only hotel of its kind that has no food or drink available. This is not too smart because all hoteliers know that food and beverage is a solid source of income, even for short-time motels and hotels. The rooms at Astrotel are also very small. Worst of all, it has no windows, which can be pretty claustrophobic. Yes, the rooms are clean and cool but this hotel offers little else in terms of amenities.
