Clutching leech-like to the corner of a building, the interior is little more than a corridor dominated by the slick, brass-tapped bar. Outside, there's a barrier separating the patrons from meandering shoppers, like zoo animals. Standing at a table with a cider on a sunny day becomes a bizarre but engrossing experience as people straining with carrier bags and prams shuffle past. You feel like you've simply stopped dead in a busy thoroughfare and in some ways you have. This is the kind of place you could walk into, get a drink and walk out of without breaking stride. Good for one though, provided you don't crack your scalp on the low toilet door. That's never an attractive thing to do in front of shoppers.

However this is a very friendly place despite what the pictures might suggest - the ridiculous number of England flags for the world cup make it look like a BNP social club but they are not a permananet feature, although having said that these things usually get left up until they have turned yellow and start to frey. Noty a great selection of beers, the theme is cheap and plentiful as the old fellas here will usually start at midday and go on drinking for ages which creates that strange, funny but baffling atmosphere you get with drunken old people. Friendly but you rarely know what the joke is - it's generally the young one.

The bedrooms are awfully dated which may appeal to more senior consumers but not my cup of tea. It does have something going for it though and that is its location as it's close to all major attractions. This allows one to explore all that Liverpool has to offer, from its merry merry nightlife to the culture of the city including the peace and tranquility of their two, amazing Cathedrals. There are so many hospitality options in Liverpool this one just doesn't feature on the radar an if compared to other hotels and apart hotels wouldn't get a look in.

Beautifully kept, clean and well thought out. Rooms very well supplied with all that you might need. The shower room although small was clean and functioned well. Breakfast ample and more than adequate in presentation. Management and staff extremely helpful and pleasant. Would guess not too good for disabled but we did not ask for this so cannot really judge. We had quite a few stairs to negotiate. It is a little away from the city centre but taxis are relatively cheap and it was worth getting them to travel in and back. If we went back to Liverpool we would certainly want to make sure we could get into the Throstles Nest again.

Before Sergent Howie discovers what is going on in the sleepy village it seems perfect does it not? Well for those of us not from England have no doubt ever since, have had this idea of the English country side with "barns" everywhere adventurous places where all kinds of fun and games occur, innocent during the day and not so much at night!! For those of you who were intrigued ever since watching the Wicker man or Straw Dogs or whichever 70's feature exploring the British countryside you might want to stay at "The Barn". I merely speculate of course, you might have a totally different agenda when choosing this place, and that is ok!! Here is the scenario; you are landing in Liverpool, a popular and cheap choice of airport for a lot of European out and inbound flights. You want to experience the buzz of the city centre but at the same time get a taste of the country. How about the Barn I say. Bring a few old classic horror movies to watch on your laptop in bed before some shut eye, guaranteed to go down a treat!! Or perhaps that's just me!! Do watch out for creaking doors and strange noises from outside!! I'm kidding!!!!!!!! This an absolute homely gem of a place to stay especially for those with littlens. The service is impeccable and a fresh recently refurbished interior is a delight. What's more, no room for complaints on the price front with single rooms coming in at a poultry £40 a night. (Yes I do love that word and it does feature in all my reviews...poultry..mmm perhaps its because I love chickens..hmm ) Do be careful when you suggest it to the other half though. "Fancy a night in the barn love" might not go down as well as you think!!! Or maybe it will who knows. Enjoy having a right old "Barn"ey if the latter is the case. What ever you do, don't forget to...Chamon it!! Who's bad?? Ma bad!!

Because my bf and I weren't familiar with the area, I just googled "gluten-free food" and this restaurant came up and looked pretty positive. By the time we walked there, it was very busy. And so incredibly lucky, as the host said we were the very last walk-ins they could accept, loud with clamour and guests talking over each other. I'm sorry they had to turn away the one other couple behind us, but I was scared too because I wouldn't know where else to get allergy sensitive food. The thing is though, if you do have food allergies here, everyone always tells you that you have to speak up about it every time. I guess I didn't because I always figured I'd just work around my problems. So my host/server always told me I needed to mention that to all the people coming to take my orders. I convinced my boyfriend to try some of the pate -- which came with a piece of gf bread and cucumbers, he didn't like it, but I enjoyed it. It was smooth and creamy -- but also, I felt that I needed more salt as the flavor was semi-bland too. Adding in more salt or pepper isn't really an issue with me, that's why they put those on the table. But bf got some really cheesy lasagna and I got a gluten-free pizza. The crust was thin and had the right texture of chewy-ness and flavor. It was incredibly delicious and delightful. It also took awhile longer, I'm sure the chefs have to be very careful about food contamination, which is why you have to constantly remind servers about your allergies so they can relay it to the back. Which reminds me, by the end of the night, I ordered a basic vanilla gelato. I thought this probably doesn't have any wheat in it! So I ordered it with one of the circulating servers, but our host at the front came over (I wish I remembered his name :( ) came over and took the bowl away because I forgot to tell this server I'm gluten-sensitive. So my bad! But it took so long for the gf gelato to come out. But it was one of the best vanilla gelato's I've ever had. Like nothing compared to any I've tasted in California. I'd definitely recommend this place. Staff was very attentive and food was excellent.
