Seemingly propped up on one side by an outcrop of rock and with a doorway populated by glaring smokers, it resembled somewhere that would result in my gruesome death if I supported the wrong team or hated places rhyming with geranium. You can tell I was wrong. It got five stars for one thing. Inside, the Herculaneum Bridge was surprisingly well decorated, with a wide, acorn-coloured bar that had model ships and steamrollers dotted above it. The barman was the epitome of Liverpudlian hospitality- mockingly jokey and the quiz machine paid out like a dodgy cash machine. Then when I thought it couldn't get better, the barman shouted us to show he'd poured us three pints 'on the house'. It shows how plagued by cynicism I am that I was unnerved by getting free drinks off the staff. Things like that don't happen, ever. The only downside with this pub is that it's miles from anywhere and I imagine would be difficult for tourists to find if they were using it as a hotel. However, if that means it remains my hidden secret then I hope it stays lost forever in the centre of nowhere. It's mine, my own, my precious.

Mere Brook House is a Edwardian country house in the village of Thornton Hough. My boyfriend was pleased to know that they had hard wired broadband and a wireless system in all rooms throughout the house. I think the word unromantic comes to mind. But really good if you are staying there for work purposes. The rooms are impeccable and really very stylish. In addition to bed and breakfast, they do wedding and celebrations. Well worth a visit!

The place itself is simple and very unpretentious, it offers a range of rooms and extras such as breakfast but on the whole there is nothing exceptional about the service. The problem I have with this place is that there always seems to be a number of people on the doorstep simply hanging around for large portions of the day which can be a bit unwelcoming if you are new to the city and looking for somewhere to stay. The prices here are reasonable and rates vary depending on the size of the room you order and the length of your stay. On the whole this place is small, simple and adequate enough but if you are after luxury then you should probably head somewhere else.

The prices are really good, probably some of the cheapest in Liverpool. especially when you see the quality of the accommodation. A weekday night will set you back about £40/45 for a double room, and a weekend night is £60. It looks like Snooze have bought two properties either side of where it is currently located, presumably looking to expand. One of the negatives to Snooze is that they don't have any catering facilities on site - it will be interesting to see whether with the expansion, they consider this.

Because my bf and I weren't familiar with the area, I just googled "gluten-free food" and this restaurant came up and looked pretty positive. By the time we walked there, it was very busy. And so incredibly lucky, as the host said we were the very last walk-ins they could accept, loud with clamour and guests talking over each other. I'm sorry they had to turn away the one other couple behind us, but I was scared too because I wouldn't know where else to get allergy sensitive food. The thing is though, if you do have food allergies here, everyone always tells you that you have to speak up about it every time. I guess I didn't because I always figured I'd just work around my problems. So my host/server always told me I needed to mention that to all the people coming to take my orders. I convinced my boyfriend to try some of the pate -- which came with a piece of gf bread and cucumbers, he didn't like it, but I enjoyed it. It was smooth and creamy -- but also, I felt that I needed more salt as the flavor was semi-bland too. Adding in more salt or pepper isn't really an issue with me, that's why they put those on the table. But bf got some really cheesy lasagna and I got a gluten-free pizza. The crust was thin and had the right texture of chewy-ness and flavor. It was incredibly delicious and delightful. It also took awhile longer, I'm sure the chefs have to be very careful about food contamination, which is why you have to constantly remind servers about your allergies so they can relay it to the back. Which reminds me, by the end of the night, I ordered a basic vanilla gelato. I thought this probably doesn't have any wheat in it! So I ordered it with one of the circulating servers, but our host at the front came over (I wish I remembered his name :( ) came over and took the bowl away because I forgot to tell this server I'm gluten-sensitive. So my bad! But it took so long for the gf gelato to come out. But it was one of the best vanilla gelato's I've ever had. Like nothing compared to any I've tasted in California.
