The pizza was entirely ordinary as well with a hard rubbery crust. Apart from the (lack of) food quality, the ambiance wasn't particularly charming either. We spoke only broken Portuguese but certainly didn't deserve the scorn of the wait staff, who were unanimously curt and borderline rude. The kitchen also kept spewing smoke in our direction which caused some serious eye burn. Not exactly sure what they were cooking, err, burning in there. I pity the customers who had to eat it! In sum, find a different place. My cat can make better food. And she's less grumpy to boot!

After a week, I cracked when I saw the Pizzaria de Cidade. I love Pizza, despite my outburst. I especially love it when it has been cooked in a wood fired oven, which is what drew me towards it's welcoming doors. We were greeted by an enthusiastic waiter who showed us to our table and then faded discretely into the background until we wanted to order. Waiters for me should be like ninjas, always lurking in the background until they're needed, when they should silently swoop in and with a flash of their pen slice through their notepad. The pizzas on offer were pretty standard in their combinations, think traditional rather than experimental. I'm all for banana and chocolate pizzas, but let's keep some food serious. We ordered the Neapolitan, big enough for two people. It arrived piping hot and smelled utterly amazing. The taste did not disappoint, the garlic was amazingly flavoursome but didn't crowd out the cheese and tomato. One interesting feature of the restaurant is it's collection of olive oils. If Mad Max ever got re-envisaged in Brazil, I know where I'd be heading to refuel my car... They had what looked like hundreds of different bottles of oil, which the waiter would visit and bring over 4 bottles which he thought would complement the pizza in different ways. It was a nice extra touch that made the experience even more enjoyable. To sum up then, I really loved eating at the Pizzeria, they got everything right and served some delicious and authentic pizza. Well worth a visit if you find yourself in Paraty.

My wife had shrimp tossed in pasta, and I had a crusted filet of fish over risotto, and both were excellent. Service is prompt and cordial. Very little English spoken, but the menus have English translations. Wine & beer served. Of the two (this one and Bartholomeu), we preferred the latter -- but if you have two nights in town I would definitely suggest trying them both; can't go wrong with either one. Brazilians dine relatively late, so if you arrive at either one in the 6:00-to-7:00 range there is no need for reservations.

For the grown up, a variety of delicious dishes and appetizers. I had risoto with a very fresh and well made fish dish. The fish was perfectly cooked and seasoned, not salty and very flavorful. This is Tripadvisor country (so far), a fact I'm doing my best to remedy. This though, is how I came to discover Caminho do Ouro. Having no Yelp to consult I'd had an awful meal elsewhere days earlier. I was determined that situation not be repeated so, against my nature, I scoured Tripadvisor. There, Caminho do Ouro is a (possibly "the") top-rated Paraty restaurant. On a rain-soaked evening my son and I found Caminho do Ouro in the town's historic district. As we entered, the only other diners there were departing. Apart from the workers, we had the entire restaurant to ourselves which seems like a crime given the quality of what this kitchen produces. A Tripadvisor reviewer had noted that his only complaint about the place was how quiet/sedate the restaurant was so I'm hoping this isn't a trend. Based upon my single visit I think this restaurant deserves to be packed. Between the two of us we consumed a filet mignon entree served alongside a creamy polenta and a shrimp risotto entree. There were so many "oohs", "aahs", and "mmmms" coming from my table that I'm rethinking things: perhaps it was a good thing the restaurant was empty. This food - the beef especially - inspired my son and I to both remark, weeks after the fact, that we wish we could go back and repeat that meal. We're still wishing. Caminho do Ouro is a quietly elegant, artful restaurant serving positively luscious food. If you're looking for an evening meal in Paraty - perhaps a romantic spot for 2 - you can stop looking. I ordered the Bojo do casa and my friend ordered the sausage with beans, rice, and mashed potatoes. Both were solid dishes. They accept credit.
