OK, so this is a nice little local coffeehouse that knows what espresso is. Hallelujah! That's hard to find around here with all the Dunkin Donuts faux mochas. Brewed coffee with chocolate mixed in is not a mocha. Anytime you have to decline sweetener in your mocha, it's not a mocha. But I digress... Village Bean is one of the social hubs in Windham. On Saturday mornings, it's buzzing with activity. You can see town leaders, movers and shakers enjoying a cup of finely brewed joe or the aforementioned espresso drinks. It's got a lot of merchandise on display as well. I've purchased a few things from their varied and pretty large selection of home decor products, and take home coffee, tea and chai mixes. They have a small selection of breakfast sandwiches and pastries that are pretty good as well. And they just added soft serve ice cream in a variety of favors. Yum! The village bean has gone through ownership changes in the last couple of years and truthfully, I have not been there in quite some time as I find that the drinks are extremely overpriced and for some reason, my stomach does not feel very good after any of their blended frozen drinks. I get these types of drinks at Starbucks, Dunkin' Donuts, heavenly donuts, Aroma Joe's to name a few, and I don't have any issues but here for some reason I do... It is very conveniently located in the village green shopping center of Windham. However, the parking lot is sometimes near impossible to find a spot, and this adds to the potential aggravation of a morning coffee run. read more

I so badly want to like this place but am not able to get past the poor management and lack of accountability. I've ordered from here a few times, both in person and via mobile orders. Was not a fan of the drip coffee, at all. My bfs latte was good though! Their bacon egg and cheese was unpredictable at best. My was runny and gross and a friends was over cooked. Consistency would be nice or even give the option for how to cook the egg. I'll give it another try in the future more direct with instructions. read more

We were a regular at this restaurant for months, spending $10+/week on coffee and pastries, as well as a cup of ice chips, which my child prefers over tap water and which was always provided free of cost. So then a month or two ago a new staff member at the counter notified us that we would be charged for the cup of ice. This woman's demeanor made my daughter uncomfortable enough that she asked what was going on after we left. I let the staff member know how much my daughter enjoyed this weekly ice treat and how we'd never been charged previously, but agreed to pay the extra charge. I cannot recall ever being charged for a cup of tap water at a restaurant, so it couldn't be the tap water they're charging us for? But then again, I've never been upcharged for ordering ice in tap water at a restaurant, so maybe they're charging us for the plastic cup? There must have been some kind of staff-wide bulletin because the next time we went we were charged $1.50 for a large cup of ice by a different staff member. I would much rather spend my money on a local business, but I can get a cup of ice for free at Starbucks. Not returning if this is the hill they want to die on. read more

Awesome coffee! When I'm riding down Route 111 and want some really great coffee and a caffeine fix, I usually make a stop at the Village Bean for some fresh brewed coffee, several varieties to choose from including seasonal flavors. The Village Bean has a quaint and cozy gift shop atmosphere with small gourmet food items on the shelves, candies, gifts, cards, and their own signature coffee beans for sale. There's a small bargain area in the back. The cafe menu offers fresh brewed coffee (self serve carafes), coffee drinks, as well as bakery items such as muffins, yogurt, pastries, croissants, and breakfast sandwiches. There are a few small tables to sit down, relax, and enjoy the coffee with a light breakfast and read the latest Hippo. The service is very friendly. My favorite coffee blends are the pumpkin spice and gingerbread. On my last visit, the gingerbread coffee carafe was empty and the barista offered to brew me a fresh individual cup, which took about 4 minutes. The short wait was definitely worth it and this was one of the best cups of coffee I've had in a long while, a strong cup with great flavors! read more

Heard about this place from another coffee loving friend. Not too far from the highway. Walked in and it's a small but a very inviting place with what appeared to be filled with locals. I was waited on right away. I Ordered a small chocolate graham ice coffee. Wow! The flavor was amazing and I didn't have to put any sugar in it (just cream, but that's what I normally do). The concept is good. The coffee average (still better than Dunkin!!!) but that's where it ends. The customer service is terrible and condescending!! Also how hard is it to update your website when you are closed so people don't make a wasted trip out for bad service and average coffee. Whoever owns this place shouldn't be owning a business at all since they have no clue how to train or help their employees, Walked in here today wanting to get a latte and a chocolate raspberry iced coffee, The lady who was working had no clue what she was doing and also told us she didn't know where the chocolate raspberry was, Ok so what you do is ask the owner but at the same time the owner or whoever knows what they are doing should be with the trainee helping them and teaching them but obviously that isn't the case and is extremely unprofessional in a business...we ended up just leaving and we will not be back...please learn how to run a business and how to train your employees. read more

It seems lousy to ding a local business which is trying to stay afloat in these trying times, but sadly, I am left with no choice. I have visited a total of three times in the past couple of months, so this is not just a case of one bad visit. The coffee is acceptable, kind of weak and doesn't taste particularly fresh, but that's not my main complaint. It's the customer service. And I'm not faulting the earnest high schoolers behind the counter; it's the individual who appears to be the owner. The first visit, I was chastized for wanting to pay with a debit card (5.00 minimum, apparently). Not the most customer-friendly policy, but okay. The second visit, I sat in a corner next to an open screen. It was unpleasantly breezy and I approached the counter to ask if I might close the window. The owner was chatting on her cell phone with her back turned towards me, and I tried to catch her attention with a few "excuse me"s. She looked over her shoulder, clearly annoyed at being interrupted, and said "we're closing in a minute anyway." I don't care WHO you're talking to, a customer need should take precedence! Recently I had planned to meet a friend in that same plaza, to eat at a pizza joint. It was an hour or so past Village Bean's closing time of 4, and I stood outside on the sidewalk near their entrance. Guess who pops her head out the door and barks "we're closed!" Funny how a smile accompanying those words would have made a world of difference. Believe me, I would MUCH rather spend my coffee money at a local shop instead of a corporate behemoth. I can even live with slightly subpar coffee if the service is pleasant and the atmosphere is welcoming. But for this, or any, small business to thrive, the customer needs to feel that being there is not an imposition or inconvenience to you. Pretty basic, right? read more

I have lived in Windham for almost 2 years now but was unaware of this little coffee and novelty shop's existence. Aside from coffee, tea and baked goods, Village Bean operates as a tiny country store with candles, keepsakes and other fun little things of that nature. The reason I give 4 stars and not 5 is simply because I'm a very very picky coffee fanatic. The coffee was actually decent and I encourage all locals to give patron to this small business. It seems that some of the flavors come from a powder or related artificial flavor. Otherwise, I loved the atmosphere of this little coffee shop, located on Indian Rock Road. Feedback to consider: I did notice some of the staff talking about each other behind the other staff members backs when waiting for my coffee. This is a major "no no" which leaves a negative connotation in the customers minds. I saw a handful of the same sentiments in other reviews here. This place is cute, staff is friendly and there is a lot of local products for sale as well. Coffee is good, they have a ton of different brewed coffee flavors which is neat. The Village Bean is the only coffee shop I know of that takes coffee as seriously as I do. They sell brewed coffee and coffee accessories and some crafty knick-knacks, but their main trade is in damn good roasted coffee beans. They feature seven or eight estate coffees; that is, coffee which comes from a single farm. Estate coffee is the java drinker's equivalent of single malt scotch. The beans are not blended with lesser varieties, as in blended coffees (or blended whisky); instead the particular taste of a single strain of coffee is allowed to shine to its fullest. My favorite estate coffee, Hacienda La Minita from the Tarrazu region of Costa Rica, is sold here. All I can say without gushing for two or three pages is that La Minita is absolutely perfect coffee, very balanced and possessing a depth of flavor that is truly uncommon. (If only yelp.cr existed...) The Village Bean also sells some regional coffee blends, where coffees from different farms in the same geographical area are blended, and some other blends -- breakfast blend, mocha java, a French roast, and that sort of thing. It is currently impossible to find coffee of this quality in the city, making the 45min drive to Windham worth it for the results. The Village Bean is a serious coffee boutique for serious coffee snobs, and that makes me very happy. read more

I stumbled across this wonderful little store by accident but it's now part of my weekly routine. The single-estate coffees they sell (whole bean or ground, your choice) are one-of-a-kind and if you want to sample before you buy they'll make you a cup on the spot. I should add that in addition to the coffee they carry a fair selection of specialty products on their shelves, including a remarkably varied array of Christmas specialties from Germany and Poland which I (again) "stumbled on" just in time for the holidays. Many of these - stollen, Herrenkonfekt, Dominosteine, lebkuchen, printen - are things I've gotten used to ordering online from expensive specialty stores over the years or simply doing without. What a wonderful surprise to - ahem - gorge myself silly once again in my own backyard. I should add that the owner is super-friendly. She richly deserves her five stars. read more

Stopped in for something quick to eat on my way to Nashua. I got an 'AM Canadian' breakfast sandwich (they're breakfast only, FYI) which was egg, Canadian bacon, and cheese on a multigrain English muffin. The sandwich was tasty, although it could have been warmer, it was a little cold in the middle. Coffee was great, and the apple pastry we got after our sandwiches was delicious! I have to say that the VB is definitely more welcoming than it used to be, how refreshing! There are a lot more sitting areas where you feel like you can hang out and chat over a cup of coffee. From large and small tables to a couch/chair area - and of course the outdoor seats in the warmer weather. It is also a store, so should you need any tea/coffee accessories - or gifty items (jewelry, small home decor, cards) - they are available. The coffee is great, they will even brew you a cup if your favorite is not out. Generally they have a few different coffees out including organic/fair-trade, decaf, flavored etc. I am pleased with their coffee, and the prices are about right especially when you bring your own mug. Iced tea flavors are excellent in the summer. They have almond milk on hand all the time! WOOOOO! I have had their lattes in the past, and they are not exactly my favorite, but it all really depends who's pulling the espresso. They also have recently started selling breakfast sandwiches, and have always had a great selection of scones, muffins, breads, etc. I feel like I have seen a few prepackaged vegan options, but have not sampled yet. This is a very overprices place for low quality coffee. They charge 3$ for a large thats watered down and tasteless. I doubt its even organic. There is a 5$ min and the cashier at the register will try to get u to buy over priced ricola or some out dated glutten filled product to reach the 5$ minimum. I am an employee at the nearby Dunkin Donuts in Windham. I dont usually go for outsiders' coffee but on one occasion I did. Didn't regret it. I would reccommend their coffee as highly as ours and I might be stopping by again next time my travels bring me by the area. If you were ever dissatisfied with the way I or any of my coworkers made your coffee, take your business to the Village Bean.
