Village Discount Outlet seems to be suffering from a serious identity crisis. This is supposed to be a blue-collar SRCOND HAND store where people can find affordable deals on donated goods. Instead, they've inflated their prices like they're some trendy boutique in a bougie neighborhood. The greed is unreal--these are donations, yet they expect customers to pay more than retail clearance. And to top it off, they slap on tacky handwritten construction paper tags to justify their inflated "boutique" pricing. It's embarrassing and cheap-looking, especially for a store pretending to be upscale. Hands down one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever had. The staff at Village Discount was blatantly rude, careless, and completely unprofessional. While checking me out, employees were talking, laughing, and acting like customers didn't matter at all. Prices were being changed with no explanation, no transparency, and zero respect. I've shopped here many times before, but this visit was the final straw. I felt uncomfortable, disrespected, and taken advantage of. Shopped here for years. Always was a great bargain shop, but it seems they have new owners and the prices have raised SIGNIFICANTLY. Thrift shops should be affordable for everyone. They have $100 tee shirts. No bargain thrift shops should ever have a tee shirt for $100 even if it's Grateful Dead. $40 for a Harley Davidson tank? No thank you! This used to be a good place to shop. The prices used to be good and there was a wide selection. Now for some reason everything is more expensive and most of the tags are white tags, which never go on sale. I used to spend $50+ every time I'd go there. Now I'm lucky to find anything worth buying, either nice or affordable. For a place that gets all their products donated to them they have a lot of nerve charging so much. I didn't smell anything disguising other than the typical thrift-store aroma tonight, so it has to be at least three (3) stars in my book. Well, when it comes to thrift shopping, you better know the current market prices on merchandize. My thrift-shopping expertise is on women's ready-to-wear. Before I commence the thrift-shopping 101, if you're a novice, you should check out stores like Kohl's, Nordstrom Rack, Forever 21, Express, Ann Taylor, and even Chico's so you get a fundamental understanding of "price points." On the other hand, thrift stores may appear to have some "designer stuff," but do you really want to spend $45 on a Jessica Simpson bag when you can get one brand new, and perhaps in the current season, for the same price or less at a department store when it goes on sale? In this case, you may want to purchase one at a department store, obviously. The same principle applies. Would you want to a "Candie's" brand coat for $40 at a thrift store when you can get one at Kohl's (where the brand can be found) for even less? Thrift-shopping pupils: I think you've gotten the picture. Hubby purchased a nice-condition PS 1 for $16 and a couple of vinyl records for $3. Tonight's selections on clothing and other merchandize were pretty decent. Thus, give this store a chance and pay a visit. They do have a private parking lot for your shopping convenience. read more

Sooo... this store puts clothing out with no cost which normally calls for haggling the price right? Well when you bring it up the counter, they tell you you can pick it up the next day after they decide the price now that they know it has value. Not cool. This is supposed to be a thrift store not an auction or a vintage resale shop. Very annoying. Not to mention it's an absolute disaster. This use to be one of my favs. No more! Clothes are so packed together. You can hardly look at them. I realize that this is not Nordstrom. Give me a break. It is so messy. Some days I walk in and immediately out. I do not understand why workers need to leave their cart in the middle of the aisles. Then as you get closer they just ignore you. Today the aisle had a post slightly off center. So they put the cart there so that you can not get through. I moved it and went through. Then she moved it back to block the aisle. This store was pretty grimy, short staffed on employees, full of broken and overpriced merchandise, and my friend thought the space between the 2 sets of doors smelled like something bad. Want to see something behind the counter or in the glass cases...good luck! You'll be waiting a very long time for an employee, even if you flag one down and ask for assistance. You know those people that hoard things? Newspapers piled up to the ceiling, random boxes of crap shoved in every corner, back issues of Better Homes & Gardens lining the floor, and piles of clothes requiring a sherpa to navigate? Well, I think they take notes on how to be "good hoarders" at this Village Discount. The racks are shoved so full that things are poking out. Generally that doesn't bother me, but when the aisle is barely one person wide, this can pose a serious personal space dilemma. To touch the mothbally clothes, or to encroach upon the space of another Village Discount shopper? I generally opt to just leave the aisle, but it would help if they could organize a bit better.... I found one prom dress and it was hanging from the ceiling "on display." I figured it would likely take me the rest of the evening to get someone to get it for me, plus it was $28. Seriously...I don't spend $28 at thrift stores on anything but vintage posters of Chicago, and even then I get a little antsy out of principle. I mean, these funds ain't goin' to charity...are they? If not, then no...I cannot fork over $28 for a 3 year old prom dress someone already got talked out of...nope. So, in conclusion...it's messy, musty and a bit chaotic, just like most of the other locations (some are better than others, however. See: Andersonville). I know it's a resale shop but jesus... It is SO nasty and SO horrible in there. My friends and I love hitting these types of stores, but we were shocked when we saw this place. A totally hit-or-miss thrift store with a sparse furniture section (read: one office chair), bric-a-brackish housewares and more clothing than anything else. I found a signed copy of Devil in the White City here once 4 years ago (I sold it on eBay for $40), but ever since then I haven't found much to glow about. You're better off hitting up the Unique on the same stretch of Elston, although that branch has been going south for a while now, too. read more

Cleaner and less cluttered with detritus than the location on Roscoe, with pants facing outward, the selection, like most thrift shops, is hit or miss. I think what helped with this location was that the non-clothing stuff was limited to small area in the corner, which meant less floor pollution. They charge a little more than the Roscoe St. location, but you are definitely getting a higher quality of apparel to choose from. read more

A thrift store is clean in my books if I don't see poop. Thankfully I've not so I don't know what the hell all the low ratings are about this place. It's not Neiman Marcus, it's a thrift store. Now I've heard enough poo stories in other thrift stores to feel that as long as I don't see it that's your first star...well the other two, they come from selection. Clothes and shoes/purses are a hot mess. If you're willing to dig you will find things. Linens look like a bomb went off, but again if you dig you will find fabrics. I've had 5/5 with behind the counter finds, I mean good way under priced collectible glassware to random figurines. I have a problem with owls, don't judge. Lastly, it is probably the messiest of any of the Village stores, but I don't think it's all that either- but I actually like digging. Stay away if you want something more organized, I'd recommend Unique to you they even do by size. read more

I like to call this place, DENIM HEAVEN... I come here for specific costumes. This week, I had to head over to VD (haha) for a Canadian Tuxedo for an upcoming party... If you don't know what a Canadian Tuxedo is, I recommend you google it. But seriously, this place is a mess so you have to be patient. What can I say about the local VDO? Every time I go I leave with something. Is the place clean? No. Is it organized? Not really. But are there values? Values A Plenty. You really can't beat paying $1, $2 or $3 for name brand clothes that somebody doesn't want anymore. Just realize you must wash them in hot water when you get home. read more

Like many thrift shops - a hit or miss place. That being said, this is my favorite. I always find something interesting to buy - I have found perfect lamps and stain-glass ceiling fixtures, semi-vintage glasswear and dishes, clothing of all qualities, perfect bedspreads and curtains, and books of all types. Most stuff is clean, or is clean-able. And very, very cheap. Today, I spent $15.00 - 3 perfect tops, 3 books, a wooden bowl, two sets of working retro indoor-outdoor party lights, a small decorative box, and an open bag of 8 size-A unused vacuum cleaner bags. Nothing individually cost more than $2.90. Yes, it is cluttered and the aisles are too narrow, and sometimes I am annoyed by the other folks there (unruly children, body odor, etc,) but that is thrift shop life. If you want better sorting and wider aisles, go to Unique, though you will pay more. Weekends tend to be the messy-est. I like to go on Mondays or Tuesdays - less people shopping, less stuff dropped on the floor, and the staff a bit more mellow. Avoid holidays - they have special pricing, but the crowds are killers! read more

Well...I used to live right down the street from this thrift store, and LOVE shopping at thrift stores, because you really can find such great deals. This store IS dirty, and some of the workers ARE rude, and there's ALWAYS kids running thru the store like little monsters....BUT I have found some really great stuff there...you just have to be prepared. Here is a few tips that work great for me!! Ladies, leave you purses in the car. I have my cash or cc in my pocket, along with my cell and car key. thats it. Long haired ladies, put your hair in a pony tail...its dirty and hot in there sometimes and if you spend hours, you'll be sweaty!! lol give yourself TIME. When I go, I already know I will be in there for a few hours. Which i dont mind because I usually get a lot of stuff. Look in EVERY aisle. people pick things up, and put them anywhere...you'd be surprised, I once found a gorgeous spring coat, in the mens pants aisle...just sitting there, and it was just a few bucks! SCORE! You just have to remember, thrift stores are not going to be clean, and organized.. its used stuff, and people dont really care. So be open minded. hope you get some great deals read more

Not the cleanest, but the prices can't be beat and it is the closest to home. Sort of like reaching into a magicians magic hat I always seem to be able to pull just what I needed out of it. Recently as the Rhubarb in our back garden was nearing the end of its "best" I went into a pie baking frenzy. With only the three pie plates I had in the house I rushed out and "hit the thrift" to see if they had any glass pie plates that I could use. Abracadabara ~ They did! I walked out of the Village with 5 "new"/slightly used glass pie plates and all for a total of $3.40! It would have cost me more than that for just one if I had run to Target and I would have had to drive farther than the 1/2 mile up Elston. Yes the whole concept of buying someone else's used stuff is a bit tacky and it makes my mother-in-law cringe (another benefit!) but I find the coolest things. For just .50 to .90 I regularly buy vases so that when I take a friend cut flowers from my garden I can say "just keep the vase, I have others". I love making Pies to give to friends, relatives or neighbors and I never worry about if they will remember to return the pie plate! I have found cute little skirts that I wear once to a bar-b-que and if they get spilt on, no biggie, because they only cost $2 to begin with. I find "autocross clothes", nice comfortable outfits that I can get oil or brake dust on with no worries. I have found art work and old board games to furnish our weekend place in Indiana. I even found a set of fancy dishes that I used to serve a special romantic meal for just me and hubby. I can't say I have never bought a gift there but as long as it looked to be perfect and made the recipient happy was there any harm? I grew up in a family that was fighting to stay above the poverty line as my father had heart problems and was often hospitalized and out of work. I learned from a favorite Aunt when I was in College that I could have fancy clothes like all the other girls if I just knew where to shop. When she first brought up thrift stores I turned up my nose. My friends would die if they knew I was wearing cast offs, USED clothing. She asked me "have you ever borrowed clothes from a friend?" Well Of course I had. I had probably borrowed something from nearly every girl on my floor at some point that first term. "How is this any different?" I could only respond with a blank look. "Can you tell the difference after a few washings if it was bought new or used? Everything that is ever bought new will eventually end up in a thrift store at some point in its life. You just need to find it before it is totally used up!" At a thrift store you find everything from the bottom rung like Walmart to the highest in high fashion like Chanel and Escada. I am no longer that wanting poor kid with a desire to be like my friends. I no longer care what other people think and I enjoy the hunt immensely. Village Thrift is the closest thrift store to my house and I am there at least once a month. It is good pickings and the people there are friendly. I never know what treasure I am going to find but I do know that if God wants me to have it I will find it in a thrift shop! read more

I am sorry but I really have to disagreee with the previous reviewer. I previously would never have been caught dead in a place like this except that my partner started going on the advice of a friend. This is probably not the best place to look for used furniture but the clothing selection is terrific. On my visit today, I picked up, among other things, a Claiborne silk shirt for $3, a camel hair sport jacket for $2.50 and a good quality wool tweed sportcoat for $5. A woman friend with two children also did very well. I may try some of the other ones but I think this place rocks. Staff is pushy (expecially when trying to get through the narrow aisles) but not unfriendly. read more

My friends and I call it the Itchy & Scratchy store. Please do yourself and your dermatologist a favor and wash any clothes you buy from this place. They have cheap clothes if that's what you're looking for. I bought a couple shirts for like a quarter each?!!? Crazy! There are a lot of hideous clothes that have somehow found their way to the racks of this place. It's like a homeless clothes shelter. It does smell in there and I wouldn't waste your time taking a shower until AFTER you leave the store- no one else does! Good if you have a budget of two dollars to spend on some throw away clothes, or a really cheap Halloween outfit you can put together with all of the post-Golden Girls' clothes you can find. I have been going here on and off for years. Every time it seems to get worse. How could there be so much stuff on the floor? Don't even try to use a cart because it just gets stuck in the piles of clothing. The last three times I have been followed through the store by men who have apparently thought the Village Discount is a pick up place. One of the times I was groped by someone and decided to leave before he would need to call an ambulance. I have scored some good clothes for my kids and some good shoes for myself. I go to thrift stores several times a week, including this store, since I resell on eBay and also am looking for art materials. I think I might stop going to this one altogether because of the poor customer service. There is an older Indian lady, cashier there, who one day decided she doesn't want to ring me up...This has been 5 times in a row. I did nothing to her and was never rude. She closes down her register every time when I get to place in line, then laughs and tries to get the attention of the other lady cashier, and I can't tell the manager since he has a personality like Lurch from the Adams family. If you want something cheap for a not-so-special occasion (i.e. Halloween Costume) this place works. I must admit though, I enjoyed this place MUCH more when I was in high school (read: broke and didn't care). This place is my jam. My entire wardrobe is from here. If you are a woman and have patience to search the racks, my god you will find some treasure here. If you are a guy, the selection is weak. All the stars above are for my ladies. If you're looking for books I've found a lot of good ones here. I like to get VHS tapes for ~a quarter, and they have MANY. There are usually a few records but they're not in the best shape. I got all my dishes from here and they are awesome. I've found good blankets too. Overall this store is very clean, not super crowded, and the layout is nice. I feel like some stores can be too big and are intimidating. Some are too small and have crap. This place is that nice medium. They also have plenty of mirrors available that are easy to find which is a bonus. read more
