I grew up in Wolverhampton and in the late 1970's and throughout the 1980's and early 1990's our family (who all lived within a five minute car ride always went to Sam's fish n' chip shop on Upper Villiers Street. It was owned by a Greek family headed by Sam, who the whole family got to know. Whenever we'd walk into a crowded shop, he'd always ask what we'd want before we got to the front of the queue, everyone would look round and see who we were, awesome!. The rotisserie chicken was amazing, they'd have a rotisserie going every Friday night and I would order a WHOLE chicken for me and my brother, 2 large chips and a bag of mushrooms that my brother loved, a bottle of white wine that we'd get from our family shop in Tettenhall and we'd be away. It was the only chip shop that our family went to at the time. It changed hands in the mid 90's and I guess it was not the same. I live in the USA (both east and west coasts) now and I was home late last year and saw it had changed hands again, its now under new ownership and I have to say it's just not the same. The Miami Fish Bar on the Dudley Road has always been a good substitute and I have to say is now the #1 place for me, given the size of the fish and the fish portions. My wife (who is American) loved their kebabs and curry sauce. No one makes fish n' chips like the Brits!! read more
