A review of Benton House Assisted Living- by a family member and RN of 35 years- earned a rating…read more2.5/5 stars from our family Worth mentioning firstly, are some Superstar care givers- Jackie the RN, aides- Josie, Linda, Joann, Keena, Tina, and maintenance/helper Eli Residents can't come out of room in nice robe or lounge clothes, need to be out at dining room early for breakfast fully dressed Charged $5 extra per meal every day to be brought to their room, even if they were having health issues or on hospice care Food was good until chef of first 5 yrs of opening left, then food was not great Served only in Styrofoam containers if served in room Lacked orientation for resident and families to building and life in assisted living No help or caring for family to learn how to support loved ones new to assisted living Call light response time was terrible even the call light in the bathroom, where residents would need immediate assistance if there were a fall or issue Meds were not consistent with doctor's orders, and some given at wrong times. Med tech for the most part had minimal training on meds If the resident is not an easy and quiet person the admin will look for issues to have them leave. Admin prefers to run a 'cruise ship' type environment which is not realistic to an elderly person who needs to leave their home and independent living due to needing assistance Constantly short staffed due to the corporate cutting numbers of workers on duty for financial gain, leaving the building severely under staffed and not equipped to handle situations that arise in this environment At night when the front door is locked, the door bell is used, and the response time was very long and most times would need to call the main phone number to ask assistance Weekend staffing was terrible and the front public restroom on weekend was very dirty and messy Many times, some of the not-so-great staff were seen sitting around and heard talking about inappropriate subjects and very unprofessional instead of helping residents and families Mail, newspapers and flower delivery was frequently delivered to wrong resident or not at all. When mail was delivered it was put on kitchen counter or on a table where it could be lost or misplaced by the residents. I waited on a check to be delivered made many calls to the company it was coming from to find out where it was, and ended up finding the check dated 6 weeks prior, behind my family's bedside table. I had even asked admin to help look out for the check. Specific to corporate admin and local director- Facility is operated for financial gain only- no caring or concern as a healthcare facility. Our family member was within a couple of months of dying and on hospice care. The facility admin stated that if she went to inpatient hospice for a short bit, they would need to re-assess her and likely would not accept her back. Also, we as family of resident were served with a letter requesting her to 'move out' since it is against DEHEC (SC state health department) rules to have a person in assisted living if they cannot use the call light. Admin/Director blamed DEHEC saying the Benton House would be in 'violation' if they kept her. We worked with the SC Ombudsman who was helpful and informed us the Benton House could fill out a waiver for DEHEC giving them the option to have our family member be able to stay in their apartment/home where they had lived for 3 1/2 and be able to pass away at home. After stalling and telling us they were meeting about if they would do this or not, they decided they would not sign the waiver. Instead of spending as much quality time as we could with our family member and conserving money for her care, we were forced to look at nursing homes that we knew she wouldn't live long enough to get to, and talked to attorneys for answers. To make matters worse, 4 days before our family member passed, we were told by email that our family member was now 'allowed' to stay. The admin and corporate tried to save face at this time, offering visiting family members lunch, drinks, etc., and offering their prayers. Way too little, way too late.

Textbook aggressive salesperson. I walked in looking for an…read moreapartment and was asked my price range by a crafty looking, inhospitable woman. She told how they had a really exceptional deal at the top of my range and how a lot of people had been in to see it. We were given a tour, the room wasn't bad but it wasn't great, and the saleswoman kept finishing sentences in a way that prompted me to sign paperwork without seeing everything. I politely stopped responding to those questions about halfway through. Unlike most of the other apartments in the area (which had much better quality, at the same price) she couldn't vouch for the community because she lived somewhere else. She called out greetings to staff and residents and was ignored, probably by people who were scared of her. I was looking for the cheapest apartment in town and of the six that had available rooms, the other five were better furnished and finished, more hospitable, and for about the same price.

Went in for a tour, was greeted immediately and helped by Maritza. She did an excellent job…read moreanswering all my questions and showing me around the property. She was very professional and knowledgeable of the property. Would definitely recommend going here and let Maritza give you a tour.
