I love this place! After years of going to a salon and paying a crazy amount for a haircut I decided to find a regular barber shop, like the ones my dad took me too in the 60s and 70s. And fortunately, I found Val's. Nice comfortable chairs, a TV with sports or news on and an overall easy going atmosphere where you can carry on a conversation with your barber or in the customers waiting or in the next barber's chair. It even has that great barber shop smell! How's that for some nostalgia? This is the kind of place where they finish off your cut with a straight razor to clean up the back of your neck. Andi, is the barber I've been using and she's AWESOME. A great conversationalist and pretty knowledgable about all kinds of different music. But even more importantly she's a Wiz with the clippers. With our first appointment she was careful to take notes. On my 2nd appointment she called the notes up and we made adjustments based on my preferences and now every time I sit down, she knows exactly what I want. All the barbers are very nice and so far most of the clientele seems nice as well. And wait there's even more, they do straight razor shaves! It took me 59 years to final get a real barber shop shave and man-o-man what an experience. If you never had a barber shave you definitely owe it to yourself to get one. And yep they wrap your face up with moist heated, scented towels. I almost fell asleep! I highly recommend an appointment. This place is pretty popular and at a busy time it's not uncommon for them to have to tell walk-ins that it's an hour+ wait. The cool thing, is you can make appointments online! My stylist was great, but I will not be back. The business has a thermometer and bottle of hand sanitizer at the door - and that is as far as it goes. The stylist cutting a client's hair in the chair next to me had her mask down by her chin and that client had no mask on. Someone else walked in and sat down waiting for his appointment - no mask - and was greeted warmly. No temp check for him. I could not wait to get out of there. I felt bad for my stylist as she was the only one who seemed to take appropriate precautions. read more

I've been going to Val's for a while now, ever since they were at their previous location on Atlanta road. I have never had a less than great experience! The new shop is beautifully decorated and comfortable. Parking can be tough right after the work day, but so it goes. The whole staff is always very friendly. When I first started going I would just have whichever barber was available, but ever since Tony started cutting my hair (must be getting close to a year ago, if not more), I always make an appointment with him! He is meticulous in cutting my hair, makes great conversation, and always leaves me with exactly what I asked for! It's clear that he is passionate about being a barber. I moved to Atl this year and had to find a new barber. I never seem to have luck with barbers and when I find someone who can do the job without leaving me feeling like I was attacked by Edward Scissorhands I am grateful. My first two visits were with Amanda and she was wonderful, competent and personable. I have returned three or four times since and had a different person each time. No bad cuts yet! I may check back in about a year to see if this place finally gets their act together (and hires a staff that can cut hair). The place is obviously under new management and their ENTIRE experienced staff is gone now. I walked in the door, and first thing, they didn't check my temperature or ask me to use the hand sanitizer that was apparently sitting by the entrance just for show. I sat down for my haircut, the stylist asks me to take off my mask for the entirety of the cut to make it easier for her. When she asked what kind of haircut I wanted, I mentioned using a 4-guard on the sides and back. She claimed that a 4-guard would be too long for clippers so she would have to use scissors. I've never heard a stylist say that before (maybe she doesn't know what the guard numbers mean?). So she used her scissors instead of clippers. On the top, asked her to take about an inch off since it had been over 2 months since my last cut. At the end of the haircut, I asked if she took that much off and she said no. Her explanation was, if she did, my hair would be sticking up on the top. I have a difficult time telling if my hair is too long or short when I'm sitting in the chair, and I typically have a better sense by the time I get home, shower, etc. After I got home, it was obvious she left it WAY too long. She clearly pretended to know what she was talking about and used that as her excuse not to give me the haircut I asked AND paid for. I've been going here for years, and the old staff wouldn't have made stupid mistakes like this. If anyone out there is thinking of opening a similar kind of barbershop and is looking for a location, I'd suggest this area. It's the only place of its kind in that part of Vinings, and it's gone WAY downhill in just the last few months. 4/30 update: Amanda, thank you for the response. The visit I was reviewing was from 4/24/21. My appt was scheduled w/Karina, but she was supposedly out sick so someone else cut my hair that day. On 2/21, I got my haircut from Paige O. She did a great job, but no longer works there. Prior to that, I would get my haircut by Diane Q, but she no longer works there either. And it looks like Andi and Vince also left at some point since 2/21/21. For the temperature checks, I just thought it was strange that it was ignored for every customer that came in while I was there. And, regarding the person who cut my hair, I appreciate that she has years of experience, but that makes it all the more unusual she wouldn't know what a 4-guard is for clippers (again, when I asked for that, she said she should use scissors instead to get to the same length as a 4-guard... she left it A LOT longer than that). She also left it way too long on the top/front after I asked her about cutting it shorter - to which she said that, if she cut it any shorter, it would stick straight up (practically every haircut I get has been a lot shorter than that, and that's never been a problem). You probably have in your computer the info on whoever cut my hair. Maybe it's worth walking that person through the clipper guards (explaining how short each one cuts hair) and then show them how short you can actually cut straight, regular hair before it stands up. Because, either she is wrong, or every other person who has cut my hair in the last 20+ years was wrong. read more

DO NOT USE THIS BARBER SHOP. I decided to give this shop a try as I am relatively new to the area and their website was well done. I set an online appointment for the time I needed, and selected the barber by the high review rating listed on the website. This barber had many time slots available for that evening, as did another barber (this barber had no review ratings). Upon arrival 10 minutes early, the barber I selected informed me she had decided the other barber would take her place. This second barber did not begin with me until 15 minutes after my original appointment time. Just before he came to get me, the barber I had chosen approached me and said she had accidentally double booked me and another client (don't know how this happens when a business has computer generated appointments) and she hoped I didn't mind giving up my spot. In an effort to give this shop a chance, I reluctantly agreed. It was obvious from the start this barber did not have experience. He did not even touch the top of my head. He started to finish up and asked how I liked the cut, and I mentioned to him he had not cut the top at all. He then began to cut the top in a way contrary to my request and I had to call over the other barber to help. Not only was this experience unacceptable, the cut was second rate at best. read more

I am new to the area and needed a hair cut. I found Val's and decided to walk in and get a haircut. I was greeted by one of the two employees when I walked in. The place was nice and welcoming. I sat there while the two employees finished their current clients hair. At that point I sat there watching one of the barbers basically do nothing for 15 minutes. Did not speak to me or even acknowledge my existence. Finally someone else walked in and she immediately told him to come have a seat. At that point the one worker asks me if I had an appointment, I said no, do I have to, and he said yes! WOW, would have been nice to know this information when I walked in and before I wasted 30 minutes in there!!!! Will not EVER go back and suggest others not as well!!!! read more

DO NOT TRUST THIS PLACE! Be very weary- they have two websites (one of which Val denied belonged to them, even though it has their phone number on it). This website www.valsviningsbarber.com has different prices than the one referenced when I went to pay. The owner, Val, is extremely rude and would not honor the price on one of their websites. Her other website is www.vagoro.com. It was $19 vs. $22 which isn't a huge difference in price. It is simply the principal. I should have left as soon as we walked in when they told me kids under 10 are not welcome, but they would make an exception this time. The only reason we were there is we had used one of their new barbers from a different barber shop and she is great with my son. Unfortunately we will never step foot in there again. I have never been treated so rudely from a business owner as a paying customer. When I left I told her I was planning on writing a review on Yelp and her comment was "it really doesn't matter because we have so many good ones". You don't treat people like that and stay in business very long. It honestly doesn't even deserve 1 star but Yelp requires at least one star to post! read more

Place has disappointed me. Being coming here for a few years now but will not go back. Scheduled an appointment for 6 PM. Was 13 minutes late. Arrived at 6:13. My fault for being late and I apologized/admitted it. You have to admit when it is your fault. Gets worse from here...My hair specialist tells me she can't take me since she had other appointments. This sounded good when I spoke to her on the phone earlier. But when I actually got there at 6:13, the shop was pretty much empty and only two ladies working. One busy with a customer and my specialist sitting behind the desk, not with any customer. No other customers there. I asked whether the other lady can work with me today. My specialist said no cannot be done. Got to wonder why she could not take me. If everyone is late, why sacrifice me as a long paying and over the top tipping customer. The maximum time she has spent with me in the past with my hair cut and beard trim is about 30-35 minutes. I have been keeping track. Men's haircut is really fast and they use machines to trim the beard. So, not sure what happened but I am disappointed. This happened an year ago as well, at that time, I wasn't late (not my fault) but she took too long to finish with a customer. I didn't walk out of the store and still waited patiently, paid her along with the nice tip. Sadly, it just takes bad experiences like these to turn me off. Gone. Not coming back. They are not very accommodating when you are a late but expect you to wait if they are taking their sweet time with customers! Good luck with that! read more
