The food is good too, nothing too mind blowing but good solid fare. My dad had the tomato soup and I had a roast beef sandwich, with thick slices of beef and a good side salad. The soup was the star with all the food made on site. I caught a glimpse of the quiche and got some serious food envy. I held off from the cakes but they looked scrumptious! I'll be coming back for the cream tea and it was fun to treat my folks, with the prices reasonable. The only downside was the individual tea pots as they were so kitsch.

Couldn't be friendlier (maybe because they don't gave the usual idiots to worry about). Book a party, the management are excellent! The interior decor was instantly recognisable - a massive wall of text telling a quirky story using local landmarks and food. Unfortunately Acanteen moved early this year to new, larger premises. Now it looks like an Ikea showroom. All the rustic charm of the old shop is lost, it's indescribably dark and the simplicity of shared benches with other strangers is ruined. The menu has been broadened to include a dinner menu and fairly bog-standard choices. The atmosphere is no longer laid back as you can feel the stress of the kitchen through the restaurant. They do sandwiches, rolls, wraps, salads etc. They also have jacket potatoes with some very tasty fillings. I can highly recommend their soup also. You can also get the usual tea, coffee and juices as well as shakes and smoothies. They have a good tasty selection for vegetarians especially the wraps which are delicious. The staff are very friendly and helpful and don't get annoyed when you spend ages deciding what to have! The prices may not be the cheapest but I think for the portions and the freshness and variety it is pretty good value. It's nice to treat yourself at lunchtime now and again.

They do a reasonable choice of sandwiches, crisps etc. They also serve soup and have a good selection of some very tasty (and fattening) cakes. They do a lovely rich creamy hot chocolate and I particularly like their iced chocolate! Their drinks and food are quite pricey but nice. On the way out try walking past the shelves of chocolate and not buying some!

Full English with wonderful bacon, Egg Benedict with a couple of extra rashers of bacon (my friend stated he wished he hadn't ordered the extra), Scrambled egg with smoked salmon and, finally, Poached egg on avocado with sour dough toast. I have been visiting Stewart's with a group of friends since 1995 and until yesterday never had a…read morenegative experience. The jacket potato was obviously cooked in a microwave because the skin was soft and rubbery instead of crisp and tasty as it always was in the past. The crispy bacon bits have gone replaced by a slice of flabby microwaved bacon. Stewart's traditional leaf tea unique to Chelmsford has been replaced with the usual tea bags. We reserved a table as we always do only to find we were placed at tabled jammed up against a wall one of my friends was so close to the next table that she hardly had space to sit down and an ather friend was so close to the wall she had to sit with her legs one each side of the table leg, not very comfortable. If you come without booking then you expect to take pot luck but not if you have booked in advance. One of my friends decided to try american pancakes (new on the menu) in an american cafe/dinner they would be served freshly cooked from the griddle not out of a supermarket packet heated up in the microwave. The revampted Stewart's is certainly getting full use from their microwave. The coffee pot leaked so badly we used all our napkins to mop up the table. Next month it will be 'Cherry On Top' and from now on. What a pity.
