I'm 5'10 and slender, and I recently won Miss Los Angeles Chinatown as Queen, so I came in excited to find something special with a bit of variety. Instead, I felt judged and dismissed. When I asked about dresses, the associate kept emphasizing how "expensive" everything was, repeatedly mentioning that pieces were hand-made and costly in a way that felt less informative and more like she was assuming I couldn't afford them. It was uncomfortable and unnecessary. I only got to try on one dress, and even then, there was no real effort to help me explore options or make the experience enjoyable. It felt like she didn't want to assist me or take the time to work with me at all. The shop itself is in a house, which I don't mind, but the customer service was extremely lacking. On top of that, many of the dresses seemed too short for taller girls, which made the selection even more limiting. Overall, I felt unwelcome, unsupported, and honestly discouraged. I went back to try on my dress after she had completed everything but I had lost so much weight since the initial fitting that the dress was too big. Based on my personal experience and previous reviews, the owners are outrageously rude if you're not planning to buy from them (i.e., if you're inquiring about renting, alterations, etc.). I'd initially made an appointment for a qipao alteration. It belonged to my future mother-in-law, and the sentimentality of wearing her qipao for my tea ceremony meant a lot to both of us. Unfortunately, it was a little too big, so I looked for a business who had experience working with qipaos to perform the alteration. As soon as walked through their door and unzipped my dress bag, both of the husband and wife owners began chuckling and shaking their heads (???). Even after explaining my situation, the wife proceeded to call my qipao "cheap" and not worth the alteration. That it must have been bought from some random store (instead of custom-made in Hong Kong, which it was). She said, verbatim, "This is what people in the USA buy for Halloween!" She then went on to be extremely pushy with her own qipaos, insisting that I buy one of them and relentlessly comparing the worksmanship of my mother-in-law's qipao to Vinshop's own. Now, I understand that she may have had her own opinions about my situation, but her behavior was unacceptable. This was about 10-15 minutes of her insulting my qipao and trying to convince me to buy one of her available ones. If she wasn't willing to do an alteration, or thought that it wasn't possible/reasonable, that's all she had to say and I would have been on my way. Instead, the business owner went out of her way to be disrespectful and demeaning while pushing her own products onto me. I assume that this business only has a good overall rating because they treat customers who buy directly from them differently from those who come to them for any other reason. I cannot recommend Vinshop enough!! Anna and Peter are both so kind and wonderful. My mom, sister-in-law, and I were shopping in California in August for a qipao for my tea ceremony. We went to a few places before Vinshop and were not impressed by the businesses and the people. When we made our appointment, we were welcomed by Anna and Peter and they were very friendly. They helped us all find qipaos. And since we are from Arizona, Anna offered to alter our dresses in a matter of hours so we could pick it up later that evening. Was a little disappointed with the first interaction I had with them. I am the bride to be and was very curious to see this spot - since it had great reviews and was somewhat nearby. So I took my parents here and when we first came into the residential area, we were confused on where the exact location was so I called them and the male owner picked up and reassured me it was in their house. So I went in and was met upon the female owner there. We had booked an appointment around 12 and due to us not able to fully find the place, we were late (so our fault's on our end for this portion). However, I did not like that they were very dismissive from their tones. We were just curious about the pricing and they quoted us at $1500-2000 per dress, which was a very big gap from what we had seen from previous stores. So my mom who spoke Cantonese as well just said to them that it seemed very expensive for a one time use and that we had previously seen qipaos for cheaper, such as the one my sister had at her wedding. I understand that each small business owner can charge their own price for their goods, so that was of no issue for me. However, I did not appreciate the male owner's tone by saying "then why don't you wear your sister's then". It just felt very harsh and dismissive and I wished they could've just said this is what they charge for their qipaos. I understand minimal Cantonese but I could tell their tone was harsher than my relatives and other business owners. Afterwards, we just felt super awkward and just wasn't sure how to react. So we just carried on and just had an open mind to still look around, since we wanted to see if there were options. We didn't want to hold back. So I saw one was that very nice and said "is it okay if I try this one?" But the male owner was like "it is too inconvenient to untie this for you to try". How is that okay to say to someone and assume? :( I just wish they were more open-minded as well even though we did have a budget in mind. After our interactions, we just felt very hesitant and wanted to leave and said our goodbyes with respect and asked for a card and they handed it to us. When we asked who to call if we were interested, they immediately were saying "don't call - just make an appointment". Overall, this experience left a very bad taste in my mouth. We went to another place immediately and had a VERY different experience there. Early on during wedding planning, my then fiance (now husband, he's Taiwanese) and I (I'm Filipino) decided that we wanted to wear traditional clothing during the reception part of our wedding celebration. I was going to wear a qi pao, and he was going to wear a Barong Tagalog. I found this mom and pop shop while looking for qi pao shops on Yelp... Unfortunately they closed for a while because of the pandemic, and I kept waiting for them to reopen. Finally I was able to schedule an appointment with them in May this year after the owners were able to get vaccinated. When I arrived to the shop, I was greeted warmly by the owners :) I tried on probably 3-4 qi paos and went with this one. I was told it'd take about 2-3 weeks for them to be done with the alterations part (it was already pre-made by them but needed to be taken in at some parts). I did lose about 5-10 lbs between the time of the last fitting until I wore the qi pao at my wedding (about a month) so it looks a little loose in the photos. But at the last fitting in July, it fit like a glove. It perfectly hugged my curves without being too tight or restrictive. I also appreciate that the alteration was included when I bought the qi pao, and you can tell they are very experienced because the owner lady looked at me, took my measurements deftly, and I was wondering if that was it... When I came back for my fitting, it fit so well! Best part is, I didn't even have to change into anything else once we started dancing, it was so comfortable to move around in. I wore the qi pao until the end of the night (probably like 3 hours straight). I'm so glad I was able to buy from them, my husband and I really wanted to help Asian small business vendors while planning our wedding, and I'm really happy with our purchase. Very high quality, hand-sewn, and they have a wide selection of traditional and modern qi paos. Even my husband's mom's Taiwanese friends were very impressed by the quality of the qi pao, they said it looked like something you'd find back in Taiwan. I can't say enough great things about Vinshop if you are looking for a Chinese wedding dress, Qipoa. Not only can you customize your own dress, they will even do same day alterations if you are in need of your dress asap. I've been to a few business prior to coming here, from Chinatown, to online shopping and even looked at a few stores in Hong Kong. What I liked most about Vinshop is they have a large variety from different designs, colors, cost and even a custom made option. The sales floor is very easy to maneuver. They put their best dresses on display and many of them on the racks. I went through the rack and found one that was beautiful, red and gold, with a design of peacocks, high collar, with a slit on both ends. The cost was a little higher then I expected. My dress was on sale for $289. But the quality was superb. The material is thick, the stiching was very clean and design was classy and beautiful. You can compare the cheap ones via online and the Qipoa that comes in a plastic bag in Chinatown, the ones at this store are far better. We were able to bargain to remove the sales tax price if we paid in cash instead of credit card. The owner is a husband and wife. They are super sweet and have been in the business for over a decade but had moved here to Rowland Heights recently. After I purchased my dress, she told me to do 2 dress fittings in case I lose weight and needed to tailor the dress before my wedding. She even did the tailoring when I went to pick up my dress because i said it was a little too tight (keep in mind the the fabric does not stretch). I loved how personable they were both were and would recommend you call to book a fitting appointment because they can get busy when you least expect it. They included the alterations when i purchased the dress. On a different note, this is the first place I found where they also so red and gold ties for men that matched the design or colors with a Qipoa. I got my husband a tie for 60 dollars. The parking is in the Asian shopping center. The business is located on the second floor to your right. I would highly recommend this buisness. I was really excited to browse and find a wedding qipao here at Vinshop because of the glowing Yelp reviews but I was really disappointed by the service I received. I had called a few weeks prior and was instructed to make an appointment online because walk ins were not allowed which is totally understandable. The day of my appointment I called in to see if I could come in 10-15 minutes early but the man on the phone said they were assisting another customer so I should come at the appointment time which is also very reasonable. When my mom and I arrived, the male owner stepped away and it was just us and the tailor. I started going through the racks excited to try some on. It felt rather awkward as I was going through the racks and the tailor was just watching me. She was also quick to instruct us not to take photos of or in the dress. Honestly, i was a bit taken aback by this because there are plenty of photos of individuals in store with their dresses here on Yelp. Also, when I was less than 10 minutes into my appointment, another party of 3 comes in looking for an off the rack qipao. The tailor immediately started assisting them and even calling in the male owner to see how well a dress fit. I had a dress picked out and wanted to ask a few more questions but their attentions were entirely diverted. Our attempts to ask questions or finalize a dress order were unheard. At that point we we were hoping to get a fabric sample so we could come back later and order since they were preoccupied. With their 1 party appointment system and no early walk ins, this was really unexpected. We immediately left and didn't get a response to our goodbye only 17 minutes into the appointment. If i were going to spend $480+ on a dress I'd hope i would get better customer service. Hopefully this was just a one off experience. read more

My mom had found this place as a last-minute attempt to get me a qipao for my wedding. It wasn't that I didn't originally want a qipao, I just didn't have any luck finding any thru my own search but thankfully, my mom was able to find this place. Firstly, I was a bit hesitant when I first looked up the location because maps show it is a house. I had my reservations but I made an appointment and brought my then-fiance with me. The owners (a husband and wife couple I believe?) have their shop set up in the garage from their home. Despite the smaller space, they had quite a few options. I had my appointment almost exactly 1 month away from my wedding date so it was no longer possible to design one to be made. Nonetheless, they had a pretty good selection. I am 5'2 and under 100lbs - they had a little bit of a struggle finding a dress that fit me well enough to be able to tailor accordingly. They were able to find me a few and I was lucky enough to find one I just absolutely fell in love with. It was a darker red that goes beautifully with my lighter skin complexion. Another bonus? They were able to tailor and have me come back to pick up the exact same day! As far as pricing, it was a bit more than I was hoping to spend but still reasonable and in hindsight, totally worth it. Especially because everything is made in-house (from my understanding) and the material and stitchwork are high quality. This shop is owned by an older couple, Peter and Anna-- whom I now like to call Uncle Peter and Auntie Anna due to warmness they always extend to me when I go there. I recently went to VinShopUSA to get a second opinion on a chipao I had custom made at GeGe Chipao in Arcadia, and I was pleasantly surprised with the amazing service they provided!! They provide quick turn-around for alterations on chipaos AND can speak English, Cantonese and Mandarin. A huge advantage compared to Helen Zhou at Gege Chipao. In addition, the quality of their chipaos are incomparable. They hand stitch the hemming of the chipaos and are very accommodating in making sure you look your best! I ended up purchasing one of their custom made sequined chipaos last minute, and I've gotten so many compliments on how beautiful it is. Within two weeks, I visited their shop several times to prepare for my big event. They altered the custom-made (and ill-fitting) chipao from Gege Chipao, altered one of their GORGEOUS sequined chipaos (see pic) to fit me perfectly, altered a pair of long gloves for my chipao, and custom tailored a pre-bought evening gown for me. This review came a little overdue! My husband and I came by in August 2011 to check out the place. Back then, they were still located in Rowland Heights near Yes Plaza. We came to see how were the Qi Pao and spoke with both Anna and Peter. We were pretty impressed with the contemporary Qi Pao which is an A-line rather than the form hugging Qi Pao. All Qi Pao's are tailor-made to fit you therefore you couldn't really try any of the displayed ones. My wedding was in Jan 2012, Anna and Peter told me it takes about 2 months to make so I came back to their store around October 2011 but this time is at Rancho Cucamonga around and to get measured. I didn't want the traditional red Qi Pao and I'm a plus size so I chose the contemporary Qi Pao instead. I had seen a picture from my friend who also got the contemporary Qi Pao and liked the way it look. Since our wedding theme was purple and blue, we decided to have a purple contemporary Qi Pao with wedding theme embroidery in gold. there were no sample purple Qi Pao so I went with one of the A-line pattern and changed the base of the fabric to purple. 2 months later, my husband and I came to pick up the dress. The work was very professional done except there were only little gold but instead of red on the top of the dress and it looks like a bib. I was a little disappointed because both red and purple are very strong color and they weren't complementing to each other. I was going to pick up one week after alternation but the red bib really bothered me. After a day, I called the store and asked if the red could be taken out but Anna told me, it couldn't be done because it's hand sewn. I was very torn. A few minutes later, Peter called me and asked me when was my wedding and said he would try his best to change it but it would take a little longer. I said it's OK as long and it can be done before my wedding. 3 weeks later, we came back to the store to pick up the Qi Pao. I had no idea that Peter and Anna remade the Qi Pao from scratch and it was astounding!! I was very happy and extremely touched by the extraordinary service! On my wedding day, I had so many compliments on the magnificent handmanship of the embroidery on the dress. A few of my friends were really wow by the dress and said they've never seen it so unique! They don't open on wednesdays and sometimes close an hour early or so when it's slow. If you plan on dropping by from far, make sure you call ahead so they'll wait for you. If it matters, I went to the shop by myself to order, and I do speak fluent Cantonese. Stopped by here without an appointment to ask about getting a qipao made for a pageant. I had read reviews about other shops that are closer to me, but they honestly sound questionable... and I know Vinshop is very reputable and has done qipaos for many contestants in pageants. My experience here was pleasant from the start. "Auntie" and "Uncle" are very friendly and they definitely listened to what I wanted. They also offered their opinions, but they were not pushy at all. I already had in mind what I wanted the collar to look like, but was unsure about the color of the dress. They had a very large collection of pretty fabric swatches... It was actually hard to choose just one fabric. Uncle helped me a lot with choosing the colors, and then Auntie took down my measurements. My qipao was ready about a month later. It still needed some alterations (it was intentionally made loose... mine was strangely very loose, though, not sure if it was so other customers could try it on?), and was told to bring it back closer to the pageant date to ensure that it would be at its most fitted. When I did bring it back in, the alterations were quick and went smoothly. Auntie does fabulous, meticulous work that is obvious in my qipao. I gladly recommend Vinshop. I got my qipao for a great price, and there are various styles and a plethora of fabric swatches to choose from. Edit: I did not include this before, but just putting it out there: during one of my visits there, the owner made a racist remark in Chinese (not about me, about a few little girls who went in and wanted to know if they do dance choreography). Even though the prices seem expensive, they are actually worth every penny. Peter's wife (she refers herself as our "auntie" ) does such a great job on fitting every dress to your body making us look incredibly sexy! I purchased my QiPao from this store and had it altered here as well. Anna was able to alter my dress quickly and it fit perfectly. No zipper humps or lumps, just a perfect fit. The price she quoted me for the Qipao and alteration was dirt cheap, cheaper than anywhere else I received quotes from. Also other stores said that the wait time would be 2-3 weeks. Anna was able to have it done for me in four days! Later I purchased a wedding dress that was on sale at Davids Bridal and it was a no brainer, I took it straight to Anna and Peter to have it altered one size smaller. I even asked Anna to add extra padding to the chest area so it would look "fuller". The dress was finished in one week and once again, a perfect fit. Anna and Peter are really great. They used to be located in Rowland Heights but moved their business to Rancho Cucamonga. I live in the Bay Area and came to LA just to look for my qi pao as I've heard they are made with better quality for cheaper in SoCal. I first called the store to make sure they were open before I drove out there. Peter told me that they weren't open but that he was close by so that they could meet us there. I had told him I was in town from the Bay Area and he was kind enough to go out of his way to come in just for me. My fiance, sister and I came into the store and I tried on a handful of qipaos. It was really nice working with Auntie Anna and Uncle Peter because it is a small business and they are appreciative of the business that they get. I happened to come at a good time after they just moved locations and so they were giving larger discounts for dresses to get business to pick up. I decided on a custom qipao and got a great deal on it, few hundred less than retail. They do negotiate, as do many Asian shops do. The difference is that you can tell how great the quality of work is on the dresses here versus the quality in the other stores. Anna does the sewing herself and she is really good at what she does. Auntie Anna was so cute and sweet too. Both me and my fiance thought that she reminded us of my mom. She helped me get in and out of the dresses I tried on, take measurements and I just felt like I could trust her. She wasn't just trying to make a sale. When we came back about a YEAR later,(yes I had a long engagement), we let both Anna and Peter know we were coming back into town. I lost my receipt because it had been so long but they didn't need it. The dress ended up being a little big on me and so Anna made alterations to the dress on the spot. We went next door to grab a bite to eat and the dress was done by the time we came back, under an hour. She even made a custom loop in the back of the dress that I had wanted and a lot of people liked that. I got lots of compliments at my wedding and really recommend Vinshop to get your qipao. A yi is the best at what she does! As an American woman I have a very different body style than the typical wearer of Qi Pao, she didn't turn me away or tell me she couldn't make one for me. She luckily had one already made that I could fit in and then altered it to fit me PERFECTLY! Her work is so detailed and exact and if you've seen any of the photos of what she's made they're even more beautiful in person. I picked up my Qi Pao today after she altered it and I could not be more happy with the final product. If you're looking for a place to go I recommend her shop she's been doing this for over 50 years and knows what she's doing for all customers. Her prices are very reasonable for the work being done but do know for a custom dress depending on style and detail you should give her a few months in advance to make it, do not wait a month before you need it! They have hundreds of styles, swatches, and cuts to look through. They were able to tell us which cuts would flatter us most and even gave us some background on the meanings of each color/animal (Phoenix vs. dragon etc). We made our style selections, Anna took our measurements, and our custom-made outfits were ready in just a few weeks. And although I had lost some weight between the day she took measurements and the pick up date, Anna was able to alter it to fit like a glove that same day. Although the pricing is a bit higher than buying something "off-the-rack" in one of those LA shops, the quality and personalization factor was well worth it. My Qipao fit like a dream and really flattered my figure. My husband and I got endless compliments on our authentic outfits. Thank you so much Peter and Anna! You have made such a gorgeous qingpao (Chinese dress) for my wedding! I can't thank enough. I heard about Vinshop USA from my mother-in-law who heard of it on the radio. So we went to the shop and gave it a try. The first time we were there, I tried on different styles of dresses and picked the fabric. It was very nice too as they can custom made almost any style you like! Anna measured me and told me it'd be ready in a few months. Then today, I went in to pick my dress up. I was nervous and wasn't sure what to expect. I was so pleasantly surprised.... their work was gorgeous. I tried it on and the waist was just a little loose as I lost some weight after the first meeting, but Anna and Peter were so sweet. They altered it for me right away to save me a trip since I came all the way from Culver City (very worth the trips though)! I came back from lunch from the area and the dress was ready! I tried it on again - Wow so perfect! It literally fitted me like a glove and with elegance. My fiancee's first response when he saw me was, "Damn that's hot". I didn't know qingpao can bring that kind of reaction! Haha. Price was reasonable too given that it's custom made and with such high quality and customer service. My dress was great. Rather than walking into a random store along Las tunas in LA, I opted to find a place less frequented by patrons in my area -the San Gabriel Valley. Frustrated that some places were not open and that I needed to speak Mandarin, I figured I'd call VINshop to see what they were all about. The lady is super talented and the man also takes pride in the shop and the work put into the dresses. The lady makes western dresses and Chinese dresses, and she will tell you what looks good and what does not. She hand-beads and hand-makes these dresses. You can see the care in her work. I was happy with how it turned out. To give you an idea of how good they are, I ordered my dress in the beginning of May, and my wedding was in the middle of June. It was done on time with last-minute touches the day I picked it up. Everything was fine unlike the other horror stories you hear about last-minute brides doing last-minute things. VINshop is very on-point with timelines and detail. And I did not feel bad at all for not speaking Cantonese or Mandarin. It's not like that at all in this store. My wedding reception was more special because of the dress. My husband's family and friends noticed the dress and I received a lot of compliments and gave a few referrals out for the shop.
