In NYC for a few days and trying not to go to Jackson Heights in Queens to Little India decided to try Little India on Lexington Ave for clothes. Sadly all the stores that were there many years ago have closed and just a couple. This one was interesting with so many clothes and misc items stacked inside. Friendly owner and my wife bought some clothes. However beware there are 2 taxes even under $100, the NYC and another tax on top that made the purchase high. The store is jammed packed with merchandise so you are bound to find something but the salesman needs a lesson in manners and etiquette. Very blunt and dissmissive when asked questions and did not even try to suggest something to accommodate the inquiry. Several years ago i went with a friend of Indian hertiage and the red carpet was rolled out and recently with an American friend, not so much. read more

My friend and I had a bad experience at a different shop and someone suggested to check out Vintage India NYC. Feeling defeated, my whole outlook changed after meeting Ish and Nikita. Having no knowledge of the culture or how clothing is worn I felt educated after leaving the store. My friend and I weren't rushed or forced to make a sale. These amazing angels of women helped us pick out beautiful sets and explained how to tie the saree the proper way. They even gave suggestions on jewelry, accessories and shoes. WOW. This little Indian wares boutique is filled with gorgeous treasures! The owner Ish has amazing taste, and keeps her store orderly, immaculate and cozy. I had the best time shopping there! She and her sales associate were so welcoming, helpful and patient as I wandered around marveling at all the delicious fabrics, textures and patterns. You cannot live another day without visiting this boutique. Her stuff ranges in price, but all the pieces I looked at were super affordable given the quality of the merch. I left with two insanely special, sparkly pieces of fabric that I intend to use as a curtain, as well as two flower garlands. I walked in haggard from a day of running errands preparing to move house, and left feeling super elated about my new treasures. I only wish I'd have discovered Ish's boutique sooner. It is such a joy when shopping at a store is not merely a transaction, but a truly wonderful experience. Ishwari, the owner of Vintage India, clearly loves what she does and believes deeply in customer service. I came into Vintage India because I wanted to surprise my husband with a Nehru jacket for Valentine's Day. Ishwari and Javed helped me to choose a beautiful jacket and I was very excited to present it to my husband. Unfortunately, the fit was not quite right, so we visited the store to replace the jacket. There was no size available in the store, and very kindly, Ishwari and Javed helped measure my husband and sent a new order to India. This was in March, and with COVID hitting, we did not count on our order being fulfilled anytime soon. Much to our surprise and delight, Ishwari stayed on top of the order. Ishwari was an angel and offered to drop off the jacket personally at our home and---it FITS! I am so impressed with the caring and consideration shown by Ishwari. I wandered in because I saw something I liked in the window, and I wasn't prepared for all the wonderful things inside, from clothing for men, women and kids to gorgeous home textiles, jewelry, and all kinds of wonderful accessories and decor. Thanks to Javed, who was super cool, I came out with a gorgeous summer-weight tunic (technically a kurti) that is my new favorite thing. Pretty much everything there is one-of-a-kind, handmade, and a lot of it is made from vintage textiles, so the level of craftsmanship and design is a rare treat. Yes, I admit this review is completely biased. haha! After meeting the Lady working there I cannot say anything negative about this place. Its full of Indian treasures. I was having a very stressful day and after walking past this store I felt a need to go in and browse around. Even though it was late in the day and they were probably about to close, she was very polite and engaged in conversation with me. Completely changed the mood of my day! Some friends of mine suggested Jackson heights for cheaper attire but I got lazy and decided to try my luck in the city. The owner was SUPER helpful and accommodating. She immediately asked my budget and worked within it and I ended up getting a really gorgeous sari and a kurta for my boyfriend at actually a very reasonable price, comparable to what I would've gotten in Queens. The couple who owns this store could not be ruder.i had a custom made satin turban made in India that I found in my closet so instead of throwing it away I thought I would bring it to the store and gift it to them. Well I tried and they told me they only sell never worn things from 1920. Wow! I cannot say enough about Ishwari and Javed from Vintage India in NYC who helped me find last-minute outfits for both me and my son for a wedding in India. They treated me like a queen...let me try out many outfits, were priced sensitive, low-pressure, and the warmest and most caring people! Even though they had other customers coming and going during my 3 hour visit, they found a way to take care of all of us with complete care and professionalism. You could tell that all the customers loved them! Also, my son wasn't able to come with me and, as luck would have it, Javed was the same size as my son and he tried on many outfits for me to see and pick from. Who does that?! Then, a few outfits needed to be altered to fit me...Ishwari not only ran them to a seamstress a few blocks away, but convinced her to do the alterations the same day. Then the icing on the cake was when Ishwari told me to go back to my sister's apartment and she would BRING THE ITEMS TO ME after she got off work. Seriously...who does that?! Anyway, I had a blast. They not only picked out outfits for me to try on, but they had such great suggestions for accessories, and all the while answering my many questions about Indian weddings and culture.
