How do you review the Virginia Beach Oceanfront without a pages long dissertation? It is so very much. There's history, beauty, storms, events, hotels, restaurants, night clubs, a boardwalk, biking, cycling, boating, offshore fishing & tours, fireworks displays, holiday light shows, theater, sidewalk entertainment, and so much more. The Virginia Beach Oceanfront was once all that comprised the City of Virginia Beach. In the 60's, as the City of Norfolk started to annex parts of Princess Anne County, Virginia Beach annexed the remainder of Princess Anne County. This made for a huge area in acreage stretched from the Atlantic Ocean to a north boundary of the Chesapeake Bay, a south boundary of the State of North Carolina & a west boundary of the City of Norfolk. What was once the entirety of Virginia Beach has now become what's known to locals as the Oceanfront. In my almost 40 years living in this beautiful town, the Oceanfront has changed drastically. Older hotels have been razed and replaced by new, many of which feature fine dining with oceanside views. Live music can be heard while sitting on a bench on the long boardwalk while bikers ride past amid those strolling on foot. The City has created a tax zone which provides funds dedicated to beautification, increased parking and financial support for major projects. The adjacent streets have evolved with a big reduction in touristy spots which were replaced by great restaurants, cafes, coffee shops, and shopping. The City provides entertainment. Plays & musicals are regulars at the different stages overlooking the water where viewers can bring chairs or blankets and enjoy free entertainment during Tourist Season. Entertainment extends beyond Tourist Season. Major weekend festivals are held annually, including the Neptune Festival & the Boardwalk Arts Show. Weekend Music Festivals are held at large stages on the beach offering different genres of music. Lucky closely located hotel guests can sit on their balconies and enjoy the happenings below. One of the most popular was Pharrell's "Sonething in the Water", which we hope will return soon. Rudee Inlet is the base for boats that can be hired for offshore fishing. Larger boats offer whale, dolphin or shark tours. One can reserve a spot on boats that offer a chance to watch holiday fireworks from offshore. Each holiday season there is a beautiful light show. One enters the Boardwalk via auto at the southern end of the Boardwalk & drives through a fairyland of beach themed holiday lighting. Who can leave out the power of hurricanes & nor'easters? The city's location has allowed us to have lesser effects from storms that hug the coastline because we are protected in part due to the Outer Banks of North Carolina which extend further outward into the Atlantic Ocean. The latest addition is Atlantic Park, a major multi use project by an investment group headed by Virginia Beach native Pharrell Williams. It's located on the site of the long demolished Dome arena. Two parts of it have opened. The first is a new entertainment venue called the Dome. It has already hosted numerous concerts, the first being 3 Dog Night, who performed the last show at the old Dome before it was razed. I love this touch of past history becoming a part of the present. I was disappointed, driving around the blocked construction site, that the new Dome isn't really a Dome. The naming itself provides the continuity. The second opening, only a few weeks ago, is the centerpiece of the development. The 2.67 acre Surf Park creates waves at different levels, tailored to the surfers currently using the facility. It's the only one in the United States & the only one in the world located at an Oceanfront. I suspect the timing, just before the East Coast Surfing Championship, was to showcase the facility to the best surfers in the world. Cottages have given way to hotels on the Oceanfront. They look out on an Atlantic Ocean teaming in history. The Norwegian Lady statue commemorates a long ago shipwreck with a story that has legends passed to the present. The shore has watched the bombing of merchant ships trying to navigate from the Port of Norfolk through enemy submarines off our coast during WWII. Look to the north & see where the ocean meets the Chesapeake Bay. Picture the Revolutionary War Naval Battle of the Capes. French forces prevented evacuation or reinforcement of Cornwallis's troops at Yorktown, which turned the tide of the war. So many past steps have walked the sandy beaches now lined with hotels as far as the eye can see. Play in the sand. Frolic in the ocean. But also remember those who have come before. read more

There's easy access to the boardwalk within feet of each other. You could spend all day exploring the shops, vendor tents and restaurants. You'll find e-bikes, regular bikes, four wheel petal carts, electric scooters etc on the trail. However watch closely for pedestrians crossing the trail from the beachside hotels. Random trivia: Did you know that VA Beach Ocean Front holds the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's longest stretch of pleasure beach? While I grew up in, but no longer live in the area, I has been a blast visiting the ocean front from time to time as a "tourist" in my hometown. If you are not a fan of crowds (like me), I would recommend visiting during the off-season, but of course that's no fun because the water might be too cold for swimming. However, the prices for hotels, restaurants, excursions, and (sometimes) parking are a bit cheaper than during peak summer months. The boardwalk and surrounding areas has plenty to do for folks of all ages. If you are into mini-golf, then this place is for you because there are at least six mini-golf spots along the broadway. Also, the area has plenty of bars and restaurants with amazing seafood. The one thing that bugs me about this area (or any tourist area): parking can be a pain in the butt. Even restaurants that have free parking often will have very limited parking, which means you might have to pay for parking. Ok paying for parking (especially in the garages in lots) is not a huge deal. Also, some parking garages might take advantage of local events and jack up parking prices. However, you have to be extremely careful, especially with street parking. God forbid, if you accidentally park in the wrong spot, your vehicle will be towed with the quickness (e.g. within 30 minutes). read more

We love it so much that we moved here! Love the bike trails and walking, the restaurants and bars, and beautifully maintained beach. I am really proud of the local police force and how they work to keep order for such an active community. There are always wonderful events to attend, as this week the Shamrock 8K and half, full marathon will take place. Boardwalk art festivals, Neptunes festival, and entertainment every night throughout the summer. In December,Christmas lights brighten the boardwalk. A wonderful place to visit year round. read more

I had a blast at the oceanfront. Getting there wasn't so much fun though. Now that its warm expect traffic and lots of pedestrians. When i came a few weeks ago it wasn't nearly as busy. But its tourist season so its a busy area. The boardwalk is a busy more crowded area. So we chose to go down by 57th street which was a bit quieter and had less people. We went in the evening and were able to find a nice spot on the water. The restaurant behind us was playing live music. It was a really nice vibe. Parking in this area is a bit tricky because its mostly residental, but we lucked out and found the prefect spot. It was a 4 minute walk to the beach and everything just worked out. It's been so lovely outside that I had to come enjoy the beach while it was still somewhat warm out. The beach and boardwalk are, in my opinion, best enjoyed during the fall. It's nice and not crowded at all. Mostly everyone here is local, which is great. Maybe I'm just biased but it seems the locals take more pride and are much more considerate of the beach. Don't get me wrong, I think the tourism here during the summer is wonderful for the economy, but it's nice when there aren't so many people. The bike path is much, much easier to ride this time of year versus the summer when everyone conglomerates throughout various parts of the path, making for a challenging ride. I'm hoping to ride until at least the beginning of December. read more

Wow, scrolling through these photos and videos the beach has really changed since I lived here in the mid-90s. It appears to have become way more commercialized. I lived on Baltic, just a block-ish from the beach and while I never really enjoyed the water [Brrrrrrr! It was always cold], or the color of the sand, [since I'm used to the Gulf Coast's bleached white beaches] or lack of sand dunes, [I like the sand dunes of Charleston's beaches], or the crowds - there is still lots to like about Ocean Front! I used to jog around this area, and rollerblade, and bike. They had free beach yoga sessions, professional sand volleyball tournaments, the really fun and beautiful Christmas light show, and my favorite was the Neptune Fest, when locals "took back the beach!" The sand sculptures were especially incredible! Am I wrong, or was the boardwalk made of wood back in the day? I thought it was and you could drive on it to see the Christmas lights. Despite the influx of vendors, and parking issues, I'm sure the additions are fabulous. Even when I lived there, the beach was definitely clean, well maintained and safe. read more

I can only compare to where I am from and have been and this board walk is lacking.. not many store fronts on the beach side.. no restaurants here I saw.. it definitely left a lot to be desired.. personally if you going to go to a beach then go for a walk you want variety of spots to stop at and eat and shop on the beach side.. compared to Ocean City I'm going to be honest trash.. This beach is lined with hotels, restaurants and bars. You will also find a workout spot, a small playground, some statutes, a few memorials, a bathroom facility and the most accessible playground that you will ever see. This is home of the iconic King Neptune sculpture. The beach and ocean front is pretty wide open and very clean. There is tons of metered street parking and a few commercial lots within walking distance that you can park at to visit here. The meters cost about $2/ hour and the lots vary in price depending on what is going on and the season. At the time of my visit, the water temp was in the mid 50s, so there was not much frolicking in the water. The ocean front has what is called a board walk, but it is paved in concrete, so ohh well. It is set up so that people should be walking on the larger section, which runs along the beach line and bikes should be using the smaller strip that is closer to the hotels and restaurants. However, no one follows that and pretty much thinks of it as a suggestion. They have a self-guided tour along the boardwalk that you can use you phone to open QR codes at posts placed along the walk that bring up specific information about the city. You can enter the area from different intersection streets, depending on where you want to go and do. There are some restrooms and the far end and foot and body showers placed along the walk. It is normally not a very busy beach outside of summer and weekends On interesting thing about this beach is that it is located in the backyard on Oceana Naval Air Station. So, you hear jets streaking through the air all throughout the day. Sometimes it is cool to see, but gets annoying to hear. This is a decent beach, especially when the weather is good and it is not packed. It is well decorated and maintained, wide open and most importantly free. read more

The Neptune festival is always a hit, but watch your belongings, one of our group's stuff got stolen once . There are a few spots in VA beach that I love to visit: the the Cavalier is a classic tourist destination, the Abbey road mural, the lighthouses, the Belvedere, the plethora of pancake houses, and of course the oodles of souvenir shops. read more

I'm sure my experience at this beach will be very different visiting in December, but even then I was really pleased with it! We were road-tripping and wanted to stop at the beach for a quick break. Of course, there was no one there so there were no crowds to deal with! The beach has a nice, large sidewalk that'll take you down the row of resorts, restaurants and shops. One block over will be all kinds of different businesses you can check out.... And for coming in December, I was pleasantly surprised with how much was open! The sand was a nice dark brown, different from what I see at other beaches. You can also see military ships out in the ocean and jets flying across the ocean front. We had a great time here. I'd love to come back in the summer. read more

I am a local and absolutely love living here. But there can always be some improvements. The roads are still torn up. And now they have extended paid parking. These are 2 things I do NOT like. There use to be free parking after Labor Day. They either need to bring that back or have free parking for locals. . MOCA art show is great. They hold this in October during our good weather. Always a great event.. The events are usually nice , weather permitting. We have been to everything. The music has been great down at the oceanfront. The best is music on the beach. Firework are always spectacular when they have them. They have really nice parades. My most favorite running event was the Santa run. The wicked 10 K is always fun. All the runners dress up in the best costumes. It's more than just running it is a great event for even the cheering crowds. So many wonderful events. The oceanfront is a good place for good food. When my family or friends come to visit they always want to eat at the oceanfront. There are many places to choose from. And don't forget the holiday lights at the beach. I always say Virginia Beach is the best place to live. We have everything going for us. There is still room for improvement but I think there are people in charge of great improvement programs that loves Virginia Beach just as much as I do. The Vibes district is proof of this. The beach is nice and clean and well maintained. The oceanfront also has different parks and play grounds and each offers something different. read more

The Virginia Beach Oceanfront has been one of my favorite places to go to since I've moved here 8 years ago. Since the weather was nice over the weekend, I decided to drive down to the Boardwalk and take a walk on the Oceanfront path. Surprisingly, other people were down there as well, either walking or bike riding. I thoroughly enjoy watching the ocean waves as I walk down the path and I even spotted some dolphins playing in the water, which is always fun to see. We were visiting for Thanksgiving, which is obviously not beach weather, but since I had never seen Virginia Beach, I wanted to make sure we took a look. After a delicious breakfast nearby, we walked a block or two to get to the boardwalk. This is a paved road, that is nice and wide so it's easy to stroll without bumping into people, as it was surprisingly busy, even for late November. Apparently, for the Christmas holidays, they line the boardwalk with lights and all sorts of Christmas displays, and then at night you can drive your car down the boardwalk to view everything. We were there midmorning, so obviously couldn't see the lights, but the displays were very significant. We enjoyed all the great works of art, including Neptune statue, and the Veterans park. I could see where this would be a lot of fun in the summer, being right up against so many hotels and condo complexes. Lots of stores selling all sorts of swimwear and accessories line the streets about a block from the boardwalk, along with lots of different ice cream shops, and other snack, and food stops. read more

When you're in Virginia Beach you have to visit the ocean front. We came here with my uncle and aunts after sunset on a Saturday and the place was still busy with patrons. Many people were walking along the boardwalk, which was longer than I thought, as it spans to three miles. Others had rented scooters, skateboarded, and there is a separate trail along the boardwalk for bikers. Since we visited during the evening there was no one on the actual beach, but we came on a clear day and had a great view of the moon. Along the beach were several restaurants, mainly luring tourists in for the seafood and souvenir shops selling typical items, like tee-shirts that say you've been to Virginia Beach and other cheesy tchotchkes. We even saw an area that had a ferris wheel and other smaller amusement rides, and a separate dock where you can pay to fish. It reminded me of other large beach fronts I've been to that are a prime tourist destination. The main tourist spot where everyone takes a photo is at the Neptune statue along the boardwalk. Parking on the street can be found, but it gets busy here. My uncle was able to find two-hour free parking in a garage nearby. It was a nice place to check out and spend time in. I imagine this place gets super busy during the summer in high heat weather. I recommend checking it out if you're in the area, even during off-season and in the evening. read more

As oceanfront areas go, Virginia Beach makes the cut. There's plenty of sand and some good restaurants. I visited on a very quiet late September weekday afternoon. The beach and boardwalk were being set up for the Neptune festival. After pricing some of the beachfront hotels for a short 2-day stay, I'm of the opinion that they are way overpriced given the popularity of the area this time of year. The Virginia Beach oceanfront area can be a bit rough at times. Criminal activity is way up in the area. During my 4-day stay in Virginia Beach, there were nightly reports of hardcore police activity around the beach. My number one reason for only giving Virginia Beach three stars Is the complete failure of the city of Virginia Beach to provide good public transportation to the waterfront. There is absolutely no logic behind a light rail service that only reaches as far as the border of Virginia Beach and Norfolk. During my 4-days I stayed at a brand new hotel in Virginia Beach is Town center. That area is completely devoid of good easy public transportation, and there is no quick way to get to the beach unless you have a car or take a very expensive Uber ride. Virginia Beach will never again be a world-class tourist attraction unless the light rail transportation is extended to the waterfront and run parallel to the waterfront. read more

Are you really at the beach if you do not come to the oceanfront? By far the best part of coming to Virginia Beach. Something is always changing and the oceanfront is no different. Early in the am it the best and quite frankly the only spot to watch the sun rise!!! Yes you can do it from your oceanfront room but it is not the same and being up close and personal toes in the sand and watching nature work her magic right in front of you. It is also the perfect place to watch the sunset. Of course you can do the standard things and visit all the shops on the boardwalk, rent a bike from or take in the many statues and landmarks along the way. Whatever you do there's fun to be had and scenery to be scene. My only word of caution is prime time day time it can get a little crowded but luckily the bikes have their own path. read more

If you are looking for a family friendly, clean beach and resort/boardwalk area with free outdoor entertainment, this is a great vacation destination! This is also a wonderful option for things to do for VB residents who enjoy having the Oceanfront in their "backyard." -- What it Is -- The VB Oceanfront beach and boardwalk is the main tourist attraction in VB and runs from 2nd St to 40th St. There are tons of restaurants, bars, street entertainment (musicians, magicians), free concerts, festivals, and firework displays. The Oceanfront Beach is clean, spacious, and bustling. A bit further down, North End Beach is more residential and a bit less crowded. Inland is the ViBe district with lots of cafes, coffee shops, farm to table options, etc. The boardwalk is comparable to Ocean City, MD boardwalk, but in my experience the VB Oceanfront is cleaner with more activities and family friendly options. The boardwalk has designated walking and biking areas. -- The Area -- Atlantic Ave runs parallel to the ocean; the numbered streets run perpendicular; the higher the street #, the further north you are. Pacific Ave runs parallel to Atlantic but is further away from the ocean. -- Accommodations -- Most hotels are along Atlantic between 5th St & 40th St. The Marriott and the Hilton are both very nice and have rooftop bars. The Wyndham is also very nice. -- Activities -- Events/live music is often at the 17th, 24th, or 31st St parks off of the boardwalk. Most people gather between the teens and twenties. I visited the ocean front about three months ago during our pandemic. It was the first time I had been to the area in over a year. It was as if there was no pandemic, hundreds of people going about life as normal. If you are ok with this than this is the place to be! Lots of beach to walk on and build sand castles on and surf if you are into that. The beach was packed when we went. All the way at the end of the beach/pier you can rent Jet skis and the like. I love that there are several restaurants all along the ocean front to choose from. All of the outdoor dining areas appeared to be at max capacity with people enjoying their meals. You can rent bikes or bring your own for a nice bike ride all the way down the ocean front, just beware many people don't abide by the bike path rules. Typically there are always events scheduled at the beach, sand castle contests, kite festivals, Neptune festival, and my favorite is when they host the monster trucks! This upcoming monster truck show is postponed due to covid at the present moment. They have a nice playground for children at the very end of the ocean front as well. You can find bathrooms and rinse of showers all along the boardwalk. We always enjoy getting ice cream when we come here and stopping into the local shops for souvenirs. There are plenty of hotels all along the area as well if you'd like to stay a few days! Last year we stayed at a hotel and it was nice to just be able to walk right out on the beach! read more

Great place if you just want to get to the beach...and people watching too. During various events, it can get pretty busy down here so be aware when driving down, especially on about 21st-26th streets since it's the main pathway. Good beach that's typically clean and there's also a pier with cute little stores! Though many stores are the same, there's a lot of typical beach strip stores for souvenirs, puttputt golf, haunted house, restaurants, etc. There's also umbrellas/chairs for rent once you hit the sand. Soft lush yellow sand and a great ocean beach with a nice breeze. Can get very crowded. Sand can get very hot. Nice promenade and lots of low-key, yet overpriced eateries along Atlantic Ave. Some homeless folks on benches at the entrance, but it's an urban environment, so act accordingly. Condos along the beach with balconies. Nice for a few days! read more

My new happy place! We are close To water and I love the beach. It's kept Clean and there are multiple Trash cans on each block which encourages folks to use them vs ditching items in the sand. There are some touristy shops along the main drag too. The shopping is fun for kids and family friendly. There are usually lifeguards in mini carts or beach buggies that patrol the area and keep folks safe. The water is so relaxing and nice this time of year. The boardwalk is also a nice place to stroll and walk your doggie. The beach also allows dogs off leash after Labor Day during the off tourist season. We love meeting other dogs and playing In the sand. Families scatter the beach relaxing in the sun making it a happy place to wind down. A cool place to hang out and relax!! read more

I left a lot of sweat and tears on this boardwalk running in formation with my command. Back in my 20s it was my favorite place, I was here 7 days a week just loving life. My apartment was less than 10 miles away, I'd hop on my motorcycle and chill any time of the day. The weather is nice in October-November so you can still enjoy the boardwalk. Virginia Beach is a combination of Military, Local Families and Tourists. The beaches are clean and the beachfront itself goes for miles. I was driving back to NY from Florida and I wanted to make a stopover here to see my old stomping ground. The first thing I noticed, its becoming more corporate There are large hotel groups taking over some prime real estate and are building like crazy. What I also noticed, the old mom & pop cheap hotels are no longer. The landscape was always 2 to 3 stories high, they've knocked them down and replaced them with new building along with condos on top. Smart VA Beach, smart. There is also the King Neptune statue! A 34-foot cast bronze Neptune statue stands at the gateway to Neptune Park. The statue was dedicated to the City of Virginia Beach on September 30, 2005 during the Neptune Festival Boardwalk Weekend. Look for it at the boardwalk by 31st street, it's overlooking Neptune's Park. What's funny about this area and being from NY, when it snows, say 3 inches? There is mass panic because there are no snow plows. The town just stays put and waits it out?? I was stationed here in 1985 filling sandbags and weathered hurricane Gloria. I left Virginia Beach after my tour and was called to serve overseas. During that time, a college fraternity decided to be stupid and raid a 7-Eleven as well as trash their hotels because of a police curfew all based on their actions. All that future nonsense was squashed and now the town is on lockdown during spring break. If you're looking for a beautiful beach city with a nice vibe, consider Virginia Beach. It was my wife's first time here and she's looking to come back in a few months. read more
