Virlie's Grill is yet another one of those quintessential Mom & Pop, Southern diners that I've always loved to visit, and continue to aggressively seek out. Usually located in small towns, there is often a friendly, old school charm to the people who work there, and a certain warmth and character to the restaurant itself that is missing in most modern establishments. And then there's the food, a chance to find excellent country cooking dishes that remind you of your mother, your grandmother, and even "Dinner On The Grounds" type dishes. The menu here is not as broad as some, but they offer a daily special or two, a variety of salads and sandwiches, some typical plates and pasta dishes, and several fried seafood choices, and a full Southern breakfast menu. We came here primarily for the Country Fried Steak (aka Chicken Fried Steak), which we ordered with mashed potatoes and Fried Okra. Chopped BBQ (described as slow cooked and tender) is also on the menu everyday so I opted for that, with FFs and Slaw, along with Hush Puppies. And since they offered a Hot Dog, I ordered that as well. The time out of the kitchen was rather slow (25 minutes for a diner is slow), and the food arrived rather piece meal - the entrees, then the FFs, and finally the hot dog. The Country Fried Steak was excellent - a good quality piece of meat, well breaded, nicely cooked, and then smothered in an super white pepper gravy. The Fried Okra was perfect, and the mashed potatoes were fine after some salt. The BBQ comes out with sauce on the side, and is a bit on the dry side, even when the sauce is added. The sauce is a thin, vinegar based one, with no heat, though there is commercial hot sauce on each table, and it is needed here. The meat had a decent flavor once sauced, and it was tender, and probably was slow cooked, just not in the last few days. The FFs were very good, as was the slaw, and the hush puppies were perfect, for my taste, at least - nice outside crust, tender with a lot of flavor inside. The hot dog was outstanding - an all beef wiener loaded with excellent house made chili, making this a "heavy" dog, but one with plenty of flavor. It is a bit pricey at $2.50, but I'd get it again. We also chose a piece of freshly made Strawberry Cake to go, and we tasted it, and it is superb. Good, friendly service here, even as things got busy - our drink glasses were never empty. I would think we'd find our way back again - breakfast is said to be very, very good. And they gave us a discount because we appear to be old! read more

A for attention!! Quaint little spot in downtown Pittsboro. A local person suggested we come here for breakfast. For less than $5, I got 4 slices of toast, 2 eggs and hash browns. Hash browns were flavorful. Very friendly and attentive staff as soon as we walked in. Dessert is displayed behind a counter and looks really good. Breakfast served til noon on the weekends and til. 11 during the week. Very clean restaurant which is important to me. read more

Absolutely incredible. The food, service, atmosphere is spot on. This place was like a Time Machine and brought me back home. We actually planned to go somewhere else but they were closed and gave Virlie's a try and now I can't see myself going anywhere else when we come through Pittsboro. I've heard so much about this place from locals and folks nearby saying this place is a must for breakfast, so of course, I had to partake im this local tradition. We arrived this month (a Sunday) around 11am for brunch. The place was crowded, but no wait, so we sat ourselves. The decor is a little strange, but I can handle that if the food and service shines, and man, does it shine! We ordered from a large menu of brunch faves. I ordered the garden omelet with grits and a homemade biscuit. When it arrived, it looked fabulous! I was happy to taste that it not only looked yummy, but the flavors coming from my plate were just as pleasing! Our server was attentive, and so were others, keeping our refills steady on coffee. They truly seemed to care genuinely about how we felt about the meal and our experience. I'm looking forward to trying this place again for lunch, or maybe dinner. I've only been a few times and the visits have been spread out by multiple years but every time I've been the food has been totally solid. It's basically a no frills diner that has a little more adventurous food than, say, a Waffle House. I like their lunch/dinner food better than the breakfast but both are totally fine. Service is always attentive and polite too. read more

AWFUL! The grilled chicken wrap was flavorless and was 90% lettuce and raw white onion which just took over flavor wise. The chicken in the wrap had a disgusting chewy texture and I spit most of it out. The onion rings were even more disgusting. They were very very soggy and the batter was super thick and doughy. The fries were soggy as well but I don't mind soggy fries. The burger was fine but not enough to redeem this meal. read more

Not sure if I would go back for lunch but I would give breakfast a try! My friend said she knows a local who goes everyday to this diner and has breakfast! Well, lm not impressed by the service. The waitress I had wasn't very friendly. When I asked how a special was prepared, I was talked over and then I decided I better not try it. If I didn't like it would I would be #@#$ and out the door. I'm not a local and they knew it. I stayed because I was hungry. Tried the County fried steak and gravy, baked potato and fried okra. It was good, nothing special. No offer to have dessert either. Perhaps now the score I would give the meal would have been better if the service. Whats not to love? Cute, old fashioned, down-home atmosphere and good, simple food. There's nothing on the menu here that will change your life, but everything we have had here has been pretty good. The cheeseburger is killer. It's not cooked to temp-this isn't that kind of place. It's just a burger and fries and eat it and shut up. Also got the all beef hotdog with chili and slaw, and it was good too. Because chili dogs are good - shut up. I got a great pimento cheese on white bread, like a proper southern boy on a hot summer day. It was good. We did get a slice of strawberry cake here that was saccharine sweet - too sweet for me to eat. That, I wasn't a fan of, but cake so sweet that it's basically candy seems to be other peoples' bag. That's fine. You'll get what you expect here, and you'll be happy. Service is always sweet and attentive. You pay at the counter and it's all no-frills. read more

If you're going to put chicken fried steak on the menu, a few suggestions. 1)make sure it's not chopped, chunked, and formed mystery meatn 2)don't cut corners on the countru gravy. 3)don't just throw the food down on the table and walk away from the person who's spending their hard earned moolah in your restaurant. So this place has decent, down-home breakfast on Sunday mornings. Never had a bad meal (though it is just basic fare), and the price is fair. HOWEVER, the service is an issue. Only one lady is allowed to take your food order-- and she is very curt and unfriendly. She missed us completely yesterday-- taking everyone else's order in the room we were in, but not our table. Told two different staff folk (who are allowed to take drink orders but never- gosh forbid- take a meal order) but still had to wait another *20 minutes* to get our order placed. Not sure why this particular lady is the "order diva"? We had another run in with the order diva a few months earlier-- don't dare to ask for any menu changes or substitutions, we learned. This is not a gourmet restaurant, but I get the feeling that gourmet food and snooty service is NOT what anyone would come here seeking! From the outside, you can tell this is a basic, down-home diner, and that's exactly what it is. Eggs, grits, hash browns, sausage, bacon, omelets, waffles, and pancakes for breakfast. BLTs, grilled cheese, and short order tastiness are the fare for the rest of the day. Nothing fancy, and probably not a whole lot that is particularly healthy either! BUT it's good, and the staff are friendly, and the coffee stays refilled. Love it! read more

We come here regularly on the weekend and they have not continued to maintain high standards as they grow. There is no system for equitably seating people when it is crowded and there does not seem to be assigned tables for the wait staff so we watched today as five tables that arrived after us got their orders taken before us. Until they increase their staff or put some systems in place, we will not come back. read more
