We had a couple hour layover in Melbourne Airport and we started our wait here…read more It was the first time trying out the Singapore Airline Lounge and it was much smaller than the Air Zealand's. Checkin at the front went smoothly and *G status gained us admittance. The rep reminded us of the early closing hours before we entered since the lounge was open only when a Singapore Airline flight was scheduled. Inside there lounge wasn't busy at all. The furniture and decor inside was average and mirrored those in other airports. The buffet offerings contained both Western and Asian selections. We gravitated towards the dim sum steamers since we wouldn't get them in the next lounge we'd visit. Overall decent pork siu mai and shrimp/ginger dumplings. What stood out was the barista service offered/ made to order coffees and teh tarik (milk tea). It was delivered in a short time to our table. I looked forward to the teh Tarik but it was the iced latte that was the better of the two drinks. The opening hours were inconvenient for non-Singapore Airlines flyers but at least quiet and less crowded option in MEL.

Friendly baristas who crafted our drinks this morning as well as the other staff in the seating and serving area. Staff walked around handing out glasses of sparkling water. The hot breakfast options were interesting with choices such as patatas bravas, vegan huevos rancheros and beef chipolata. The cold items were better tasting especially the fresh fruit smoothie and mint and berry coulis chia pot. This was the first lounge that I can recall that included a kiddie play area with toys. Nice for families. Each set of chairs, comfortable, included a side table with built in outlets and four USB ports for charging. Nice spot for relaxing before our 14 hour flight.

We had discovered Global Gossip whilst we were there…read more We tracked down this shop pretty quickly to: a) let all our friends and family know we had arrived b) convert our Global Gossip card to work in Australian Dollars from New Zealand dollars c) find out about mobile/cell phone options. This store was extremely helpful. They converted hubby's card and we got a second card for me. They also provided us with a sim card which at the time was on Vodafone (I have no idea one year on whether they are still provided by Vodafone). There are a number of internet terminals available. Additionally there are points where you can plug in your own netbook/laptop. Long opening hours. Close to many shops, restaurants and attractions. Superb. If you need a way to communicate with friends and family who are overseas I would definitely suggest checking out Global Gossip!
