I had been putting off getting new glasses for quite some time, partly due to the fact that I had some bad experiences in the past with other opticians and eye wear businesses. In January I finally decided to make a real effort to find an eye doctor whom I could trust and who would truly take care of me, rather than simply going through the motions and then sending me on my way. After some weeks of searching and meditating on my possible options, I chose Avenue Vision. From the moment I walked in, I could tell that I was in a different type of eye care facility, and I was greeted by sincerely nice people who were very pleasant to interact with. Almost immediately, I was in the optician's office being examined by a very professional and quite obviously caring man, Dr. Joe Borden. This kind and knowledgeable man gave me the most comprehensive, informative examination my eyes have ever received. And I felt truly at ease and relaxed, as it was clear that the level of care I was going to get here was far beyond anything I had ever experienced in all of the eye exams I've ever had. I came in not only for a long overdue exam, but also a specific issue with my eyelids. This was a matter of great concern and emotional distress for me, and had been for many months. Dr. Borden immediately made it clear to me that I was going to get real answers here, and that I was not going to be sent home without his taking the time and effort to make a thorough and definitive diagnosis of my situation. I was really treated like a valuable person, not just another customer feeding a corporate enterprise. For the next two months or so I followed Dr. Borden's detailed, prescribed treatments and had some measure of success, but my situation was still not completely resolved. Because of this, my level of concern and unhappiness was still quite high and my emotional well being was not good at all. So I made a follow up appointment with the very friendly and caring staff, who, like Dr. Borden, made it quite clear that they actually cared about me and were dedicated to getting me the help I needed. They really did. Upon seeing Dr. Borden for the second time, and sharing with him my ongoing frustration and feelings of despair over the issue still not being totally cleared up, he once again came through for me in a way that very few health care practitioners in any area of medicine ever have. Honestly, I've seldom met anyone in the healing arts, be they conventional or "alternative", who has taken the time and energy to communicate to me that level of caring and intention to do whatever it takes to see me reach my goals in health and wellness. On that second visit Dr. Borden spoke so personally and authentically to me, and was so reassuring that my issues were not going to be unresolved that my entire being breathed a sigh of relief and I felt like for once I was not alone. Through another careful and detailed examination, it was determined that one part of my issue was completely cleared up and that the other would be addressed as well, that I needn't worry, I wouldn't be abandoned. This is a rare practice and healing environment. Each and every person I've dealt with, including Misty, Jan and Shauna, as well as Dr. Eva Strube, has been super nice and very present with me during my visits to this office. Not once have I been treated as just another customer, but like a friend. It's really quite amazing to have this experience, particularly after going through such a frustrating journey. I am still on the road to wellness, but I am continuing to improve with this second set of treatments and am confident that I will indeed have my eyelid issues totally resolved and that I need not worry now that I have found these good folks who consistently treat me with care and respect. I highly recommend this practice, Dr. Borden and the whole staff for anyone who wishes to be treated the same. Your eyes will thank you, and it will be a distinct pleasure, especially in contrast to so many other optometrist's offices and practices who, in my experience, are so often at the other end of the spectrum. When I brought my son in for his first eye exam, I wasn't sure about our vision coverage and expected a little guidance. Instead, the woman up front turned immediately condescending, then ordered a test our referring doctor had already performed--one he later confirmed should never have been repeated, much less billed for. When I later called to request a refund, I was berated for ten minutes, accused of "yelling" when I never raised my voice, and interrupted constantly by a staffer rewriting the entire encounter in her own fictional version of events. Her parting words said it all: "We have a very busy practice, so I don't have to put up with this kind of behavior." Translation: they don't want patients who expect basic respect, just ones willing to pay for unnecessary tests and tolerate abuse. No dilation, no eye pressure test & none of the standard questions ODs use to assess serious issues. He seemed more interested in telling my husband and i all about his Colorado road trips. Then, Dr H retrieved a copy of my prescription from another room, came back and said "everything looks great!" No details. I am 53 and i feel like my vision has declined in the past 3 years. So, i asked Dr. H if he could use my glasses to compare how much my vision had changed. "Of course!" He took my glasses & disappeared, returned momentarily & announced, "it hasn't changed much at all!" Again, he provided no data & no details, which seemed odd. The entire exam took 10 minutes, max. On the way home, i had forgotten to ask for a prescription for Bimatoprost . left a message with the receptionist. (i was surprised that i had to explain what it is!) As so many other reviews have said, the office staff is totally incompetent. The message the receptionist took was that i needed a prescription for Prazapam - a medication prescribed for insomnia & anxiety! When Dr H returned my call, he was also confused about what it was i needed but seemed more interested scolding - yes, SCOLDING - me, accusing me of YELLING at his staff on the phone. What i suspect is that this OD accused me of yelling to deflect from his own incompetence. Scolding a patient is a sure way to get them to go somewhere else as they are about to realize that this OD is nothing but a silly quack.

I…read morehave been unemployed for a number of months now and have been subsisting off Medicaid -- Dr, Sumner's office miraculously (I don't think that adjective is an exaggeration) accepts that!! I made an appointment; and the day of my appointment, was able to shift my arrival time earlier 30 minutes -- that was nice that they could make that happen!! I used to think I received pretty superlative eye care at Lenscrafters; despite their being a chain, I received about 5-6 eye exams there. Apparently I didn't know what "superb" eye care was, because I received no less than 10 separate exams there; possibly an eye dozen if you include the examinations by the doctor himself. Dr. Sumner has the demeanor and carries himself like a respected, kindly old grandfather; he is very polished and meticulous and leaves no potential detail unturned. Despite my fretting about what exams Medicaid would cover, he found a way to bill everything to Medicaid. His staff was professional and courteous. My 1 regret was that I could not get the high index Rx he wrote up for me covered at the optical store in his office; that would have set me back the better part of a thousand dollars, I'm pretty sure. I had to flee to a chain store to get it filled out and am still waiting for the finished products. If Dr. Sumner senses that you are a higher-risk candidate (for example, diabetic with a risk of diabetic retinopathy; or have other corneal issues, genetic issues or dry eyes), he will go the extra yards to make sure you get the best possible eye care -- and in my mind, that makes him a rarity: 100% concerned with health, financial remuneration comes secondarily. When I get "real" medical insurance again, I hope I can select him to be my optometrist -- we should all be that lucky.

His practice has expanded to include an office in Centennial and has added additional physicians. My current doctor is Weston Sherwood (not yet on business card) since he just graduated last year. Over the years the office staff has changed but the service and care is top notch. They have all the current diagnostic machines. They accept all standard insurance plans including VSP. Their in house lab and eyeglass retail space have been served by Julie & Kyle as long as I can remember. They continue a standing policy that you can get your eyeglasses adjusted for free Mon-Fri and Sat till 1pm. They continue to hand out free microfiber cleaning cloths and alcohol cleaning sprays. Free parking around building with handicap ramps. Nice seating area.

I ended up on Yelp today after I did an internet search for the practice to get their number because I needed to call to see if I could get in for an urgent matter. Yelp came up as one of the first results, and I saw some reviews that ticked me off. If someone had to wait a bit to see the doctor, maybe it was because they are so wonderful here about squeezing people in with urgent matters. How often do you have a medical practice that will see you the same day you call? Almost never. I have had several urgent eye issues that needed dealing with immediately and I got in immediately. In this post Covid world where every medical practice of any kind is understaffed, and lack of responsiveness is the norm, this place stands out as an exception. I don't get new glasses often enough to have strong feelings about the buying glasses part of the business, but I can say unequivocally, the patient care here is second to none.
