As an added F*** You, when I called to cancel they refused to give me a refund for the current month, which they just billed me for this morning. My father, Thomas Shess, started this little newspaper out of our home on 28th St. He wanted to give a unifying voice for the people of North Park and their homes to set forth positive change within the neighborhood. At the time (1993), many of the historic homes that give NP such character were in disarray. In even worse shape was "Downtown" North Park, with the blighted North Park Theater, and seedy 30th and University bus transfer area. Look how far we've come. In a time when this community was considered nothing but ghetto, a handful of residents maintained and improved their North Park homes. My dad put together the first issue of North Park News with the proposed plan of the North Park Sign on the front page below the green masthead, and he ran the paper out of our house on 28th Street until early 2000. This paper was a total family operation, and I can still see and smell the print that wiped off on my hands from stuffing fliers into issues or from dropping them on peoples lawn. I hated it at the time, but now I can't help but laugh when I remember picking up the 2000 or so copies of the paper from the printer. I remember our first color issue, and I remember when I was a staff photographer for a few years shooting Paesano's Customer of the Month. Me being a cute kid and family, my dad always used pictures of my friends and I as models for the front page. We always had a seat of honor during the Toyland Parade, and one year I remember we were loaned a H1 hummer to wave from. It was awesome. My dad sold the paper around 2002 I believe, and I'm happy with how it is today - the buyers are doing a good job. This paper was a part of my life, and now it's a part of the community. Take pride in your neighborhood North Park because people fought to revitalize it. What we see today is a result of the effort of a great number of great people coordinating and working together. To name a few : Senator Christine Kehoe, Councilmember Tony Atkins, Tom & Phyllis Shess, Don Convington, Jay Turner, and anyone who took or takes pride in what is the truly the best and finest neighborhood of San Diego.

I'm not reviewing the magazine itself, but the event/parties they throw every once in a while…read more I went to an event put on by Pacific SD Magazine at Maloney's Tavern in Downtown, Gaslamp for the Padres v. Cubs afterparty back in May. The event started at 10 PM - 12 AM. It was free drinks, free food (first come first served). My group of 9 was one of the first to be let in into the bar. We headed to the food table about 5 minutes after we went in and got a seat at a booth. Rather than have everyone in my group head to the buffet table they had set up, about 4 of us went up and brought back the food for everyone. Apparently, for the hundreds of people they expected to attend the event, they had ONE round of chaffing dishes worth of food (approximately 4 different selections). So within 15 minutes, all the food was gone. At around 11:40 pm, they finally bring out another ONE set of food. One of our friends who had arrived late went up to see if they had brought out anything different. When he got up there, 2 VERY INTOXICATED Pacific SD employees yelled at him and said that he doesn't deserve to get any food because his "group" of friends took all the food. They claimed that due to their limited budget, they can't afford to order a ton of food, and people like "us" hog all the food. Well Pacific SD, if you didn't want people to take more than one thing, DON'T MAKE IT BUFFET STYLE! If you do, they you have to expect that people will take more than one thing! Excuse me but (1) how much food did you even prepare for these hundreds of people if you think that 9 of us could have taken it all and you ran out in less than 15 minutes of opening? and (2) are you, as EMPLOYEES of Pacific SD seriously yelling at us in public WHILE drunk? Very professional Pacific SD Magazine, very professional. These individuals said, "you have your friends to blame" when my friend mentioned that food was gone within 15 minutes. Sorry, but we didn't take the entire tray. In fact when we walked up, and I'm talking 5 minutes into the event and being the first ones there, the tray was ONLY HALF FULL to begin with. So how much food DID you in fact order? Less than a full tray, that's for sure. OR everyone that works for your magazine already ate half of it. Regardless, don't try to blame your shortcomings on the guests. it's UNPROFESSIONAL. So following the events of that night, I wrote an email to the editor of Pacific SD Magazine detailing the events that unfolded that night. I received a reply about 3 business days later from their marketing director with the most BOILERPLATE language talking about how Pacific SD strives to put on cool happenings around town, blah blah blah. With that said, sorry. That was the most insincere "apology" I ever received. So in conclusion, Pacific SD Magazine could care less about their readers/followers. They can't even take the time to actually write a genuine apology when their own employees make a fool out of the magazine and yells at the guests for absolutely no apparent reason other than to mask their obvious "budgetary" issues.

I picked up a free copy of Pacific Magazine at Wine Steals last month and was wowed by the content…read more I never heard of the magazine until recently, but I think it's fairly new with lots of good stuff. Why do I like it? Because I'm no longer a fan of picking up the San Diego Reader since it's just a magazine of filler ad space for cannabis, night clubs, auto repairs and DUI attorneys. It's become a waste of a tree in my opinion and to have it published weekly? Sad... Pacific Magazine brings you the inside scoop of San Diego's night life and also keeps you in-the-know of restaurants that recently opened or opening soon. It interviews chefs and other locals that add some fun in the scene. I think their "blind date" section of their magazine is entertaining since i it's not limited to guy-girl dates. I'm not much in "the nightlife scene" but I do enjoy a good meal at the newest places to check out. The layout of Pacific Magazine is cool, but I laugh at how some of the pics have a somewhat beyond reality intake (coming from my viewpoint). Not everyone is San Diego looks hot & sexy, but they do a good job letting people think that. If you're not a fan on their Facebook page, you really should change that. They give away a ridiculous supply of gift cards for funny status update contests they have (which seems like) everyday. I'll continue to pick up a copy of Pacific Magazine, it's free and entertaining and not a waste of time to read up on the cool stuff they come up with.
