Café 5pm really stands out as one of the best. They don't need to open up at 5am and cater to the caffeine junkies like a starbucks does because they are selling flavor and experience. It more akin to the slow-foods movement that appreciates the moment and the experience than just a buzz in a to-go cup. These guys make a mean espresso and serve it with a water chaser. The beans are roasted really well and you get to taste the coffee. I got to try beans from Veracruz and Nayarit, and I can't wait to go back to try the beans that were recently roasted. It reminds me more of a bar than a coffee shop. There is a really cool patio and lounge that was packed both times I was there. From the looks of it, they are set up to handle very large volumes of customers. As you walk in the building there is a retail outlet with crazy selection of machines for making coffee. However you want to brew your coffee these guys are going to show you the correct way to maximize your enjoyment. If you are a discerning coffee enthusiast then you have to bookmark this place and make the trip. Just remember that they don't open up until 5pm.

That being said, finding a quality cup of coffee in GDL to my taste is easier said than done. That was until I found Café Oro Maya. This place is located near Chapalita, one of the best places to find great food in GDL. Just across the street from the glorieta, you'll find easy parking right in-front. With comfortable seating inside and out, you'll find a selection of traditional Mexican coffees. Or, as I often do, I'll get a coffee "para llevar" (to-go) and stroll the glorieta, which often has artists selling beautiful paintings/sculptures. The owner/operator is very friendly and knowledgeable about the coffee he sells, which originates from the Chiapas region of Mexico. The coffee is grown in fair trade and environmentally sustainable conditions. The owner seemed to recognize that my Spanish isn't the best, and spoke to me about his coffees in English, but I still force myself to learn and speak in Spanish, because it sounds much better. While sipping a Mayan espresso, I find myself relaxing in this beautiful shop, playing a game of dominoes, and wishing I could take this coffee home with me to California. I'll settle for a pound of beans to take back with me on the plane, because I know I'll be back soon, and will always make it a point to visit Café Oro Maya.

Food Review: Los Chilaquiles - Guadalajara, Jalisco…read more On my recent visit to Los Chilaquiles, located right in the heart of Guadalajara, I arrived a bit past the traditional breakfast hour, but I was seriously craving some good huevos rancheros and a comforting café de olla. Thankfully, both absolutely hit the spot. Café de olla is a classic Mexican coffee traditionally brewed in a clay pot (olla), infused with cinnamon and sweetened with piloncillo--a deep, rich unrefined cane sugar. The result is a warm, aromatic, slightly spiced cup that feels like a hug from Mexico itself. Their version was delicious. To complement it, they offered me conchas con nata, which was such a treat. Conchas are iconic Mexican sweet breads known for their soft, airy interior and crunchy shell-like topping. Nata is the thick, silky cream that forms when fresh milk is gently simmered--rich, smooth, and perfect for spreading. Together, it's a simple but heavenly pairing. Right away, I noticed that the atmosphere of the place feels warm and inviting--relaxed, friendly, and full of that authentic Guadalajara charm that makes you want to stay a little longer. The service matched the atmosphere perfectly: attentive, kind, and genuinely welcoming. They started me off with a trio of homemade salsas, along with Mexican crema, queso cotija, and a crunchy homemade tostadita. Everything tasted fresh and thoughtful. As I looked around, I even noticed photos of well-known personalities who have visited, which makes sense--the food and experience truly stand out. Overall, Los Chilaquiles delivered amazing flavors, excellent service, a great atmosphere, and that authentic touch that makes breakfast in Guadalajara unforgettable. Highly recommend stopping by if you're in the area.
